Tabletop Warhammer?

Just found out my pre order for leviathan has been cancelled as independent stores are only getting 33% of orders promised.

Games workshop...go to hell with this limited box launch BS

Edit: got a copy after a friend pulled out so took his pre order, also seems to be plenty of stock on the actual GW site as well this morning.

So much for the made to order then. I've not ordered yet but leaning towards it. Although my plastic pile of shame is already ridiculous.

I saw it in store yesterday when I was visiting Birmingham and the models look cool although I'm not a big fan of the flamers. Reminds me of the old models where everyone was in the exact same pose. I quite liked the more dynamic stuff I've been seeing. I had underestimated just how big the new Termies are going off photos and the new Carnifex is great, not so much the name of it though. Screamer-Killer :D

The flamers are a bit of a let down, but can't grumble, plenty of other good stuff.

Got it for 110 as well so fantastic value!

Space hulk version 12.0 will be next out soon now with the new terminators, be interesting to see the size of a genesteeler next to a new termite!

Don't think I'd ever find people to play the game with but I am getting really tempted to buy some just to see how bad my painting is with my shakey hands.

I got caught up with the hype and pre ordered a Leviathan box direct with GW. I used to play a bit when I was younger 30 years ago. I'm thinking of playing a few games with the figures provided then work out what 40k army I want to play with.
I'm sensing this is going to get expensive lol.

Pre-ordered from the LGS having got back into the game at the beginning of this year, they still have a few available for pre-order so looks like GW have done okay this time around.

Looking forward to getting some Marines painted up and some games in with the new rules, and if all else fails go back to stomping on stuff with the Chaos Knights.

Can anyone recommend any painting guides? I'm flicking through a few on YouTube but obviously I don't know whether it is good advice or not because I don't know anything about it.

I mean total beginner like explaining terms like layering and techniques, brush care etc.
I am going to try get some cheap unpainted models to practice before I get any new ones.

Hey all...

My 12 year old nephew has recently bought his first kit, a small Warhammer 40,000 set that he's very excited to start painting and playing with.

It was not my suggestion but, funnily enough, the first kit I ever bought was a Warhammer 40,000 set when I was about the same age. He's truly a mini me. However, I unfortunately rarely used my kit because I had no one to play it with after my big bro moved out.

Anyways, I think it's nice that he's got a new hobby and I don't want him to abandon it like I did. I'll play the game with him of course, but I was also hoping some of you Warhammer gurus could suggest some good resources I could send his way, or even recommend some other items he could get to help fuel the passion.

So any websites, stories, books, worldbuilding resources, additional kits etc for a newbie?
Tell him to check if his school has a warhammer club.

I think GW had a YouTubechannel for that kind of stuff that was helpful if memory recalls.

There's a few painters that I follow but Vince has videos on almost everything at every level.

This is a couple years old now but would be a good start point if I remember correctly.

Well after circa 20 years away from the tabletop hobby (and a few years of attempts from several friends and family), I'm diving back in with Leviathan. Between this, my love for the actual universe/lore, Space Marine 2 (video game) and the 'Nids and Dark Angels both getting some love all at once (which was both forces I had back then), it just felt like the right time, and my wife has shown interest in doing a Tzeentch force she can use cross AoS and 40K.

Definately feels like coming full circle, especially since last year I found my old Skullz card (never turned in) and my old 2nd edition Hive Tyrant; who may well get kitbashed and repainted and re-used as a Tyranid Warrior or similar. HE IS SO TINY!!

Looking forward to it, the game has likely changed an awful lot, but I've always loved the universe, the stories, the aesthetic etc, and the new models look fantastic. Also a hell of a lot of nostalgia in the new Screamer Killer aka OG Carnifex!

PPS I really regret giving most of my original models away now!!! (I had around 3k points of 'Nids and 500-1000 of Ravenwing...)

Did a quick trial session and walked past a few of the rebranded Warhammer stores (still keep calling them GW) and have to say the overall friendliness, lack of sales push, and seeming desire to actually help you enjoy the hobby seem to be SO much better than it was 1-2 decades ago; as does reduction in the amount of 'everything has to be painted' that used to get rammed down your throat, with one store going as far as to say assembled was all they required, and the others basically all being happy with minimum level of a basecoat; big difference to the old days where I used to remember people being sent away because their armies or models were painted or painted coherently enough; and people walking into the store and getting offered the biggest box sets going within seconds.

Actually makes me feel like I might be able to enjoy the tabletop hobby again between my friends and family, the local store, and also the local independent (which luckily also stocks a big range), the game is also expensive as hell as it always was, but at least they actually seem to offer decent ranges of combi box sets nowadays which give you a decent discount over buying seperate, and again makes a nice difference (was eying up the Dark Angels combat patrol for example...)

Will probably grab a few once the entire tyranid range is refreshed and new multiboxes etc out. Need me some Genestealer CQC carnage again!

Interesting videos posted, I think getting an airbrush is a step too far at this point but other than that seems ok. The old me would have bought absolutely everything and then never actually used it :D

I take it from your location that the local store is Wargames Workshop? The store and the community around it are fantastic, and even better now they've got a licenced bar, I find i'm in there at least once a month for games and always has a great atmosphere.

Airbrushes 100% have their place but especially at the start you can definitely go without even for tanks etc.

Another recommendation for painting tutorials for me is Mediocre Hobbies, I feel like his tutorials are good examples of painting in a very straightforward, accessible way with very good results and he absolutely bangs out tutorials at the minute.

I'm new to this too, here's more some channels I found useful as well as the others already mentioned, many feature entire series of beginner videos.

Midwinter Minis
Ninjon
Duncan Rhodes
Eons of Battle
Goobertown Hobbies

Finally had some more free time to continue trying to complete one model each of 20 different space marine factions as my first project for a mini display case. Taking a long time but got side tracked a while back by buying a couple more sets before finishing my first ones, now I see how the backlog issue starts.

Saw a video about using magnets to change heads and weapons and thought it would be cool, but after magnetising most of the Grey Knights Combat Patrol box set, I'm almost already burned out on using magnets for anything but bases now as already took a lot of time doing that without even starting painting the set yet. About 10 of my 20 space marines display will also have magnetised heads, but getting the tiny 1 by 1 mm magnets aligned is somewhat of an art in itself and very fiddly.

I found out there is what seems to be a very decent 40k club about 10 miles from me so now I have the interest to play.
I'm attending the 10th ed 40k event this weekend just to meet people etc, will probably come away with some figures. A bit more expensive than online but keen to support local independents.

Interestingly it doesn't come up on Google searching for things like 40k clubs, wargaming etc, I found it by accident searching 'warhammer' in my towns Facebook group.

Going to try get a leviathan box this weekend too, mainly for minutes to practice and the codex thingy, I know I could get separate but still. Probably sell the nids

Edit. Bonus, they offer a further 10% discount for armed forces/blue light card holders. This will make them cheaper than any online store I've found.

I had my preorder in for the leviathon on opening weekend.
I have only recently just gotten into the painting side.

Never really dealt with the tabletop, hoping to change that now though...

Although it feels incredibly overwhelming reading everything.

Undecided on Leviathan. I wouldn't want to practice painting the nids, I will want the book, and space marines will be good to practice on, but not sure how cost effective it would be. Until I see how cheap I can get the book for I won't know I guess. Looking at the price of some of the sets of marines, I don't think £120 is too bad considering.

Yes, I live very very close to it, about a mile away. There is still a local GW/Warhammer also in the town centre. Back in the old days I used to visit the local GW, but Wargames or online are my goto for most things these days!

That all being said, the local Warhammers I've popped past have all felt much more friendly and aimed at helping you enjoy the hobby than they used to!
