Tabletop Warhammer?

I said to myself I won't get carried away when I visit the club today. This is purely stuff I think looks cool that I'd like to paint at some point.
Playing wise I'm a sucker for armour and like the SoB stuff, especially the Exorcist, but I had to stop somewhere. Got a few books too.

I didn't order in the end but still a little tempted to nip into the store to grab one if they have any. Decided I'm not a huge fan of the dreadnought or flamer marines. And my plastic pile (of shame) to paint is already huge. I've got Dominion and a chunk of other Stormcast with a solid idea of what I was to do to them. I've not even finished sculpting addons onto one squad yet. I've been painting / practising on my old models and boy are almost all the new ones are straight up better.

Still very much in the analysis paralysis phase. Have so far ordered most the generic stuff like knives, cutting mat etc.

I decided to get a 'wow stick' because I think barrels look best drilled and it was about £10 more than the manual vise drill I had earmarked. Not gone crazy with most the stuff, got cheap brushes from Ali Express for example along with the drill. Then spent hours watching about paints, was set on Vallejo but then I thought actually for a beginner like me, I may appreciate the potential ease of using citadel for various guides etc. I don't have any colour theory or art technique knowledge so rely on guides initially for almost step by step. Also I can use my discounts at the club for the citadel paints.

I deffo just need to get on and practice the painting itself now. Also need to try stop stressing about it being perfect, it won't be and I likely won't ever get to 50% of the skill required for the examples on the boxes. I think I'll stick with Death Guard for now as I have the most of them, at least gives me a target to get painted so I can use them in games.

Have not played since 3rd and 4th edition, looked a while back but everything in 9th seemed like a massive mess.

10th however from the 40 min battles youtube seems quite nice, may hop back in.

So far have narrowed down to

Necrons, always had a soft spot for Necrons, and some of the new models look amazing.
Dark Angels, an army I always wanted to do.
Grey Knights, think these guys are just epic
maybe Eldar, but they seem a little bland model wise at the moment apart from 1 or 2 really epic units.

Eldar have some beautiful models. The new avatar, wraithseer, banshees. The only down side is they also have some of the oldest. Necrons had a nice range refresh. Dark angels have had some but I think the ravenwing look trash. Grey knights have a lot of very old minis.

It's a bit disheartening to read that the army I've chosen aren't particularly good competitively. But I don't want to be someone who chases the current strongest so I'm sure I can live with it.
I'll probably end up collecting multiple armies anyway. Bit miffed I can't use my forgefiend with death guard but I can use it with every other chaos faction so that's good. I just like the look of it.

But confused on predator, index says two variants destructor/ annihilator but there's only one chaos tank for sale which is just called Predator, is this because the loadout you choose determines the variant? This is made more confusing because those variants are separate purchasable models for space marines.

Also I noticed there aren't index cards for imperial fists, white scars etc. Does that mean they all just fall under normal space marines now except for the ones that do have cards like knights, crusade etc?

They could be outrageously overpowered in six months, play the long game and get the dudes you like. It's always up and down.

The space marine one is just one kit, they present it as two options on the site but it's one kit that builds both - if you bought an annihilator and a destructor you'd get two identical boxes. Chaos Predator is the same I think just with a Chaos upgrade sprue in the box.

The Baal predator I think just has blood angels bits and different guns.

Any chapter that doesn't get its own index/codex just uses the Adeptus Astartes index. The other first founding chapters like white scars did get supplements in 9th (actually I think they carried over from 8th) but it looks like in 10th there will probably be detachments when the codex comes out that suit their styles, like bike-heavy for white scars etc.

Got back into WH40k after a massive break (started painting around 1993 then stopped in 1996). Wasn't really into the game itself, mainly the lore but my kids have got into it as now and have their own armies.

I've got me a nice Word Bearers army but it's been tricky to get some actual games in. I don't suppose there's ever any OCUK member games in say London or Kent?

@PardonTheWait thank you for that. I noticed most armour is the same really, like I think the razorback is just the tank sans turret, considering you can assemble as you wish, what benefit would there be not just buying a predator and setting up as a razor, maybe price difference.

I understand there are codexes to come that may offer 10th gen updates to some stuff but happy with what's on offer for now.

I have been reading up on the rules but a few things around etiquette I need to understand l, I suspect maybe not applicable in a semi casual setting. For example, I understand you don't have to limit yourself by the model, so if you had lascannons, you could say it's actually a (whatever). But at what point is that acceptable, surely you can't wait to see the opponents army and then think oh crap I should say I have this loadout as it's good against a unit they just put down.

Weigh it up. If you aren't interested in marines or nids it may be better value getting the hardback book and some minitures you actually want.
That’s not how it works!!

Postman should bring mine today.
