Seems Vallejo updated their game range and now on par with AK 3rd gen 18ml also. Some pretty awsome paint paint ranges out currently.
Wonder how many people purely move away GW because of the pots. Also their naming convention is also starting to **** me off.
I've been trying to avoid GW paints for years, 6 months after I buy a paint it seems like it's often gone solid for some colours, given I don't get to paint much I resent the need to basically buy replacement paints every year, even if I've not opened them.
Vallejo paints on the other hand I've got some of them that are 15 years old in dropper bottles and still usable, and one of my friends still has some usable ancient GW paints (rubber topped originals).
90s being when I last looked in to it and I was a nipper, however now I have a jerb so can maybe afford some without asking my dad lol. I've loads of boardgames with miniatures and also don't know how Warhammer would compare against those
One of the "tricks" with GW stuff is often to try and get things like the "start collecting" or big release boxes if you can as they often work out a lot cheaper than buying the constituent models individually especially if you buy from a third party at 10-20% off RRP.
In my limited experience with boardgames with miniatures the GW stuff tends to be a different (slightly harder) plastic and more detailed, but at what is often a much higher price
Personally at the moment IMO the best way to get into GW is probably via the "small unit"/specialist games, Necromunda, Killteam or ideally Titanicus* as they're relatively cheap and quick to get into it.
I think relative to the 90's the cost has gone down a fair bit and you're dealing with plastic now not metal.
*Although they're "epic" scale rather than the normal 28mm scale for the rest, and fairly pricy per model, but they're hulking great mechs
