Tabletop Warhammer?

For those interested, some Forgeworld goodness :)

Looking good, pretty tidy, the storm bolter looks great.

I would suggest getting another model and experimenting with thin washes, highlighting and dry-brushing. They're pretty good techniques for showing up model details and adding real depth to a paint scheme.
Also perhaps try thinning out the paint a little more on the base colour.

All in all though, much better than many of my early painting attempts.

Experimentation, practice and a steady hand are really key to getting good at painting.

Thanks :)

The basecoat is actually much thinner than it looks but the wash made it look like that, defiantly need a thinner wash so thanks I'll give that a whirl. I'll post a pic later of one with just a basecoat on and see if it needs a thinner basecoat.

I think I have made it harder on myself by fully assembling the models which is making it slightly harder to even attempt to drybrush anything (I did try on the horns and it just looks a mess)

Good to see the terminators coming along, and thats not bad highlighting for a first go I have to say!

Basing them up will make them a real difference too

I'm assuming you don't mean kitbashing and just making it look like they have been in a ruckuss already

How do people recommend painting white over a black undercoat? Paint it grey first?

Don't tbh. If you want a white finish then a white undercoat is really your only option.

Painting light colours such as white and yellow on black means you have a to build up a large number of very thin layers. I do this for some Brettonians I am painting for a friend but mainly because he had pre undercoated and I did not want to do it again or strip them down.

All mine above are painted over white undercoat.

How do you do your recessed areas, black wash?

Panel lines on mine were done with GW black wash mixed with some Medium.

I am going to try oil washes soon once I get the right varnishes next week. Basecoat white, apply gloss varnish, mix black oil paint with turps/white spirit to make a wash, apply wash to panel lines. When dry re-varnish with Matt varnish to remove the shine.

That is supposed to work very well and the varnish prevents discolouring the area around the line which you can see I have done in some areas.

Just waiting for the varnishes to turn up. I have bought Vallejo ones so I can run them through my airbrush for better control of application.

Loving that Tau scheme, but maybe a bit more red on the fire warriors :) something like the end of the gun and one of the middle panels might look good :)

After posting last night I actually added more red. I have gone for the right shoulder pad (smaller one) and the upper part of the rifle. Still have squad markings to add etc with transfers once my decal medium and decal fix arrive.

it does look much better with the extra red accents.

Yeah yeah. Will do when I get home. Decided 2am was too late to be getting the camera out as my eyes could barely focus and whilst I trust auto-focus I still like to be able to see!

STOP JUSTIFYING IT PEOPLE !!!!!

Your will is weakening...You know you want one...

I've actually got one of the Brass Scorpions to assemble and paint here, which is a big beastie, but I've not got the confidence to do it yet.

Shadowman, those tau look stunning, much better than mine (I sort of regret my colour scheme, but the Tau were the first army I'd painted, and my first painting in 10 years).

This is amazing, not touched any GW stuff for 16 years and also feeling the need. Nearly crumbled and bought an airfix kit to paint at weekend but much rather start practicing with some space marines ... I wonder if that Imperial Guard and Ork collection is at bottom of the wardrobe still or mum has 'given it away' like she did my pirate lego...cowbag.

I have just recently started this again after 8 or so years and I am so glad that I have - I dont have much time for much but picking up the painting and building my first Chaos Army is great fun.

My painting standards are not half as good as some on here but for my first go I dont think I am doing too bad!

My next army is going to be the Tau but not sure how to build that just yet, waiting to see if there are any new releases for them and concentrate on my Chaos army first.

I do love how several people have rediscovered this hobby (myself included) due to this thread :)

Organised another vassal game with Shamikebab tonight, will be on vassal and mumble around 8pm providing we both make it. People are welcome to come along and see me get my ass kicked again :P

I'm actually nervous about tonight, I think I did so well because of a number of factors that won't have such an effect tonight....I think it will be much closer. Also depends massively on what scenario we roll!
