*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

I made my own squat and bench stands as it happens ;) Nothing special but they hold the weights perfectly, Although yes walking back and forth a few steps to be clear of them does get on my nerves on occasion :( Probably not the safest way to do it either but it works for now.

Finally got around to making a decent flat bench a couple of weeks ago to go with the squat /bench stands ;) Actually I'll throw a couple of pictures up when I get chance :D

First things first, I am a safety concious person so I wouldn't use them if they were not safe, They may not look up to much but I assure you they take the weight perfectly, I've so far had 360Kg on the bench and stands with no problems although yes the stands would tip if I pushed them with weight on (So I just won't push) I do need to make a better set of stands (with a sturdier base) but those work fine for now.

I can also use the bar and stands together comfortably for inverted rows too as I made the bench + bench press hight at the same hight as my old gym's equipment :p which is perfect, Just enough room for a rucksack if and when i need it for extra weight.

Total cost ~£25 for all the wood, screws and ready mix for the posts! and the bench doubles up as a seat outside when we are having a drink in the garden :D It's 4 foot long so a couple of people can get on it.

Hit 150k on my PB last night, well chuffed. Going for 160k next week as I felt I had more in the tank so to speak. But even after hitting my PB I managed to do a PB working set for 130k :)

Nice one T1Cybernetic :)

I'm so tempted to do something like that, just to tide me over for a few weeks or something....Probably try and make slightely sturdier stands though mind...Put some 'struts' either side etc.

Good though :)

my friend hasj ust bought 2x dumbells, you basically put them in their own rack which has a bunch of weights in, flip the dial on both ends to what weight you want (in lb), 5-70lb or so then lift it out the rack and it has the weight you specify, quite nifty!

Not sure exactly what the measurements were but each dumbell goes upto 40kg each he reckons

only downside.....it cost him £450!!! and he still pays a £60 a month gym membership, he's mental!!

shoulders/legs tonight, can't wait :D

Yep I got some of these I have two sets
1 which go from 2k - 21k another set which go from 20k - 40k. With that stands it would have set me back over £1,200. However I got them for £200 :)

They're great!

As long as I am careful I'll never tip them over because they weigh about 5 ton :D but I really do wish I had made a decent base for them just so I don't have to be so precise putting the weight down.

My legs just fall behind as they don't get the effort and attention because I always feel dizzy or sick after the first two exercises. My gym is upstairs and kitted out with a carpet so I can't push myself to a state of vomiting, either :p

Become a massive fan of training hams and quads seperately.

Not only can you train either of the groups properly, as SLDL's after smashing quads becomes difficult as my legs are usually shaking all over the place to the point I feel like my knee is going to bend backwards, but I've found the nausea/sickness that you sometimes get is minimal. Likewise tight quads can make curls difficult/painful.

It's the same whenever you superset opposing muscle groups like chest and back, much more taxing and get worn out much quicker.

Training hams & quads seperatly won't increase the frequency but having such a large muscle constantly boosting test & hormone levels *could* be beneficial...

Yeah....What are the bases currently then? Just cement?

Pretty much yes, It's just a bag of Postmix from my local DIY place, A mixture of stone and cement, Only a couple of quid for a bag so I got three (1 for each post) and a bit more to top it off.

It set's within minutes, Just fill up the buckets with Postmix, Make sure everything is level and then fill to the top with water  Easy as that.

Imo the whole test and growth output by training legs is hugely over-exaggerated. Yes it will help but nothing ridiculous, same could be said for back really? I

But agree with you on the training seperate, I prefer this as tbh simply put it's to hard to put maximum effort into several body parts. Like I don't get how people train chest/shoulders/tris at same time, be far to much for me... In saying that though I never do same thing every week, and I sometimes do a lot more sometimes less just depending on if I feel I've "worked" the muscle well or not. So a session could go on from 40 mins to 1 hour 30 mins :p

Agree with this to an extent. I know plenty of big guys who have never trained legs properly and are hugeeee. Way bigger than me who squats and deadlifts his ass off every week :D

They are obviously lacking in core strength / power as opposed to someone who works the lower body, but if thats not their goal fair enough.

Imo it's pretty simple.... deadlift is a mass builder, think about it your incorporating just about every muscle group in your body... So they are essential for building it all up!

Squats on the other hand also a mass builder, but it's not essential, I know plenty of people who will get on fine with heavy leg press, I just prefer squats though. Either way the reason people suck with legs is due to being babys, I know quite a few bbers who have huge jacked arms, chest, shoulders but a lagging back and legs. That is because these imo are are the hardest muscle groups to work in terms of getting the intensity and contraction in place. Most people on legs get to that point where it hurts so they stop, but when it hurts, thats where you want to be, thats the zone you want to be in.

But as you say if thats not their goal then fair play. Everyone has different goals weather it's just to have big guns and pecs for nailing birds, or strong upper body or whatever lol.

I do believe that heavy squatting/deading will help add overall mass, but if you decide not to train these lifts you can still get big.

Aye - all depends on your goals. My focus has always been strength/power as opposed to getting big. I can pull 200 on the deadlift and the huge black dude with 18+ guns at my place will shake his head and say hes never even going to try that kind of lift.
