*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

my friend hasj ust bought 2x dumbells, you basically put them in their own rack which has a bunch of weights in, flip the dial on both ends to what weight you want (in lb), 5-70lb or so then lift it out the rack and it has the weight you specify, quite nifty!

Not sure exactly what the measurements were but each dumbell goes upto 40kg each he reckons

only downside.....it cost him £450!!! and he still pays a £60 a month gym membership, he's mental!!

shoulders/legs tonight, can't wait :D

if they are the bowflex ones, which im sure they are, they are crap and get slated on the BB forums

Slowly getting back into the gym again after another knee injury from football (that's twice this year!). Often struggle to find the time due to doing shift-work. Hopefully I can get involved again easily enough when I'm back from my holidays. :D

I've visited almost every gym that I can find in my area and I can't find a decent one. They all seem to be full of cardio equipment and completely forget about free weights.
A couple of the gyms had no free weight equipment at all, and those that do usually have one smith machine hidden away in the corner.

Does anyone know of a decent gym in the Tunbridge Wells/Tonbridge area?

do a search for the big names, virgin active, etc, their gyms are usually huge and have plenty of everything.

Agree with this to an extent. I know plenty of big guys who have never trained legs properly and are hugeeee. Way bigger than me who squats and deadlifts his ass off every week :D

They are obviously lacking in core strength / power as opposed to someone who works the lower body, but if thats not their goal fair enough.

I have always had thick legs, even more so from my years of cycling, on my very first squat session I hit 100KG :p. Since starting the gym, my legs are definitely my strongest point and I'm only just starting to work my legs properly with proper sets of squats. The max I've tired for a full squat is 140KG for 1 rep, but since then I've been doing sets of 5 for 110KG, 120KG and 130KG and now I'm squatting 130KG quite easily and comfortably. I'm setting my self a personal goal of 200KG for a 1 rep max by mid November. :p My 1RM since finding 130KG for 5 comfortable, is probably 150-160KG.

I tired Zercher squats a bit too, started with 60KG, then 100KG, and 120KG, I found them really good for good squatting form, but they destroyed my forearms :p, especially the 120KG, it felt so wrong holding that much between my forearm and biceps. :p

I have the exact same problem in my area too :( So much cardio equipment and lots of weight machines and a weight selection for Tinkerbell which is only so good for a short while.

The freeweights section at the place I go is seriously lacking. I recently tried some calf raises on the smith machine, and I struggled to find 230KG of plates. It's okay when it's quiet, but when it's remotely busy, you have to do some waiting around for plates.

Had 2 weeks off work and Ive been hitting my local gym, Im gonna be devastated going back to work now.

My local gym is fantastic, huge range of equipment, boxing bags, Dumbells up to 60kg etc.

And to top it off, ya sit in the lounge after a workout, pay 3 quid for a lovely chicken wrap, watch a bit TV and enjoy the whole gym experience. Even use a sauna if ya want.

All for 7 quid a week, with no contract, just pay the cash for the weeks ya go.

My RAF gym seems depressing now lol

Wow, what Gym's this? Is sounds great, £7 a week?

Wasn't able to manage 120kg today as some idiot was using the bar, and taking hours in between sets just watching TV, then doing about 20 sets :/ The kind of guy that is in there doing not a lot

Did manage a PB of 220kg on the leg press though for 5 sets of 6 :) But because I couldn't do squats until last, only managed 100kg for 5 sets :(

Ah another user, I joined at the end of July and by far the best gym I've used and being a student I'm on £7 a week. £40 annual fee is a little steep but if you take the classes regularly then it's all worth it (those spinning classes almost made me cry :D).

I have been struggling with my shoulder since the start, was thinking that they were little weak and just need catching up with the rest of the body but one morning my left shoulder just seized. Turns out I got tendinitis which does explain a lot, anyone has much experience with that and know what I can do to minimize it?
