*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

Due to something bad that happened in my personal life, depression has taken my appetite entirely. I am now relying heavily on milk for calories, currently on my 5th pint today.

Should I just do a mini cut until I have recovered or perservere with this bulk? As I want to get bigger ideally..

Question to you all how many hours per week do you spend doing Cardio (excluding weights)

90 minutes football training and a 90 minute match most weeks. When I first started strength training I would stuggle with a match if I'd done squats the day before, but I don't even notice it any more.:)

I think it takes me between 35-45 mins to get to gym on my bike, so thats cardio there and then once I get in the gym I do another 45 mins cardio on top of that and then I bike home after doing an hour on the weights which is like another 45 mins and I do that everyday. But I've always tried to do more then everyone else. I think normal people that are slim dont need to do that much, they say 3 or 4 times a week for 45 mins each time is enough for normal people.

So many people running and cycling.
Am I the only one here that absolutely hates doing normal types of cardio?

Sure if I had to cycle to the gym that's fine, I guess that's not cardio per say but also just transportation.

How many people here have ever attempted Barbbell Complexes even? It's quite a good form of HIIT.

It's especially brutal at 40kg.

Cosgrovian Complex

Deadlift x6
Romanian Deadlift x6
Bent over Row x6
Power Cleans x6
Front Squats x6
Push press x6
Back Squat x6
Good Mornings x6

That's one set, you do them all without stopping or dropping the bar.
You go as fast as you can keeping proper form.

There's 6 sets, with no more than 45-60 second break between sets.

That's my cardio. :)

Nowt to be honest. I burn about 75 caleries on the treadmill or rowing machine doing a warm-up run/row for 5 minutes, but apart from that nowt. But I'm reasonably skinny and just trying to bulk at the moment (which I think is going well)!

I did complexes on my cut back in Feb/March after reading an article about them on T-Nation :) Basically just circuits with a barbell but is good fun and a nice change from regular CV work.

Got one of these waiting for me at home:

Used one when I did my KB training earlier in the year and had been meaning to buy one for ages. Literally has no give so totally detsroys all the knots in the muscles and can withstand 600lbs so should last a life time :)

This one looks brutal!

Yep it's sort of like a self deep tissue massage. Rolling your quads & calves with your full bodyweight pressing on the knots is incredibly painful but they really do help loosen up DOMS. You can also do all up your back, spinal errectors, traps (by winging your scapula - elbows together out onfront with hands on clavicle) feels so good!

Turn on your side and you can give your lats a tickling. Should help to improve flexability and increase bloodflow too. Get rid of all those nasty knots in the muscles making them less effective and stop them getting worse!

Explains it quite well. Also look into PNF stretching too. The whole GTO and muscle spindle relationship is quite interesting to learn about.

Edit: Does mention about helping to correct Kyphosis, was it you or perhaps I'm confused with another poster here who said he suffered from this?

Want to send me one please? ;)

You'll be lucky!

Foam rolling isn't easy as you spend a fair bit of time suporrting your own bodyweight so is a little taxing in itself!

You can pick them up on the cheap but they eventually loose their shape and become naff which is why I went for 'The Grid' as it's designed to last. False economy and all that buying cheap ones etc.

did you buy this from america? on the website you linked to? or are there uk suppliers?

might try this out for the sake of £20-£30, going to see a masseuse is hardly feasible every week.

Just had my statutory company health check. No illegal substances found (not a surprise), but best of all, Cholesterol is way below 5 - (4.37). Blood pressure is a little high at 132/80 - but I've had a bit of coffee today so probably hasn't helped :p BMI - well we all know that, but she was happy with that, waist is a little larger than I'd like at 35.5, so I'm going to aim to drop it to below 35".

So feeling pretty good! :D

Good stuff, my blood pressure is always quite low. 118/58 was last one lol. Cholestrol is perfect tho.

Tbh from your pictures your waist is more blocky just the way your built etc, so your waist is more likely to be that wide genetically. Which isn't a bad thing, pretty good for powerlifting anyway! Big blocky abs and strong core lol.

Im opposite my waist was measured in at 27 inches, took a pic a couple of months ago and it's ridiculous lol. And thats not ripped down. I have quite wide hips though to make up for it.

Yeah I am more of a walking wall than a curvey bloke! lol! Still it would be nice to drop the visceral fat even a little. But yeah you're right I am just genetically built to be a bit more chunky!

Wouldn't say it's chunky. More of a:

Like pudz, his waist is probs 40 inches, but solid wall. Also you probs find it easier to have your abs out at a higher body fat. My body fat has to be right low for me to get my abs out lol.

The only UK supplier I coud find was on Amazon which stocks it for £45 (£52) delivered which is £2 more than an hour with my eosteopath. Foam rollers can be had much cheaper but as I mentioned they loose their shape after time. Quite expensive but should prove to be worth it. You can of course make your own with some drainpipe and some foam as it'll be just as good I just couldn't be bothered!

OT: Looks like I'm taking myself back to 'squat school' as my technique has gone totally to pot. Leaving me with horrific back pumps due to hyperextending and poor hip drive and glute activation. My desk job can't be helping at all.

Front squats with my heels raised feel great back squats feel horrible, akward and ineffective at the moment. I know where I'm going wrong it's just a case of re-teaching myself.
