*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

 Deadlifted 160kg x 1 today. Wasn't feeling in top condition, did 135kg x 5 for 4 sets before and it felt pretty heavy. Still, that's 10kg over last weeks PB!

Cool, should I start ditching the back rest for DB press and Arnies then?

Try them - you'll find them much more taxing.

There is an arguement that going heavier with the backrest hits the shoulders more, but I personally believe that if you can do an exercise with strict form with no rest then you're recruiting more strength for achieving your goals.

Cheers freefaller! I'm in the 8-12 rep range for everything else at the moment but it's really nice to blast out some strength with the low-rep deadlifts!

[Edit] Oh that's what I was going to ask. What's the advantage of using no back rest when doing DB press? I always normally use a back rest you see. [/Edit]

Basically what FF said.

With no backrest to push against you have to roll your hips foward, engage your core and pull your shoulders back with your traps and back muscles and then press. It's much much tougher than with a back rest. Almost feels like a totally different exercise.

I'll definitely give that a whirl next week then. Tell you what, the amount I've learnt every week since joining the gym.......... I don't think any two work outs have ever been the same! Always been learning slightly new techniques to make the workout better, or new routines to try etc............ ****ing awesome hobby, I must say!

Write your exercises down, what weight you did and how many sets/reps etc this will help you progress a lot quicker as opposed to just lifting what you can :)

I hve been really pushing myself last few weeks, lots of aerobic (6-8km every day except for rest day) and heavy weights (as heavy as I can go anyway lol ... basically things like 8 sets of 2-3 reps at max weight I can push (benchpress etc)

had already gone from 36 inch waist (tight, almost 38) to 32 over 6 months. 16 inch collar shirts (couldn't do up as was too tight) - to 14 1/2

and last 2 1/2 weeks - dropped to 30 inch trousers :) very pleased indeed.

weight has still been dropping whillst putting on muscle mass at same time - so win win really - lost 53lbs or so in total now

I miss the gym on my "rest" day lol

for some reason for me anyway, the combo of the heavy weights and hard aerobic exercise seems to bring real benefits - which is good.

Just curious guys, gains have slowed to a crawl, if any at all and work has gone chaotic. Can i assume that it's burning up more macro's, so i just need to throw more food down my throat?

Getting plenty of water and rest of course.

Starting cardio as of tomorrow :L, just gonna do HIIT routines 3x a week. Jog for 1 min followed by all out sprint should have my fitness up in no time.

Trained chest today wasn't to bad wasn't firing on all cylinders due to an arm infection but seem to still do not to bad:

incline bench - (2x warm up 70kg) 100kg - 8, 110kg - 8, 120kg - 8
incline flyes - 25kg dbs 8, 30kg dbs 8, 35kg dbs 8
Tricep pushdowns - stack x 3 for 10.
DB Skullcrushers - 25kg, 30kg (8) (finished off with some ropes).

Still seem to be looking big n full and still leaner even tho last week I had 4 curries and one last night haha.

Ya it's simple mate you ain't gaining then up the calories, but don't over spill, some people think it's just a case of ram all these calories in you will just get fat/watery period.

Of course, it's why my gains are slower than perhaps what others get, im trying to keep it lean as i can, whilst still packing on. The past week has slowed right down along with strength, which is very frustrating of course.

Good to know that's all it is, all carbs are low gi of course.

On the flip side when my picture was being taken on friday, i looked awesome and trained like it. There was a pro photographer there probably for the website update, so hopefully i'll be looking suitably buff or at least hold the record for breaking the most monitors worldwide. :D
