*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

Got my comp tomorrow or today really, I'm getting a little excited for it now. I've been dehydrating since 11 so only have 8-9 more hours left. Should probably get some sleep or won't be much going on for me so will give you all an update tomorrow.

Any good places to get a cheap oly bar?

I'm going to build a platform to work on my snatch and C+J at home. The gym I'm at doesn't have a platform or I'd train it there.

So I'm on the look out for a cheap 7ft bar and perhaps 100kg of weight (not that I'll use that much anyway, though my C+J should get to that pretty quick, I hope :D)

Cheapest I've found for a bar is £55 rated to 320Kg which more than enough for my needs. As for weight, the link morba posted about £1 per kg on oly weight looked good!

If anyone knows anywhere cheaper/better then please let me know. Thanks.

Still cant believe they got rid of some of the machines.

If I speak to manager what do you think I should say, what would you say?

I can see me just getting angry and getting into an argument with him/her.

EDIT: Also, ya know like in a chain gym like virgin active, they have like staff members on the gym floor, walking around and picking up weights and talking to people etc, most of the time they annoy me, even to look at em and sometimes they even try talk to me and waste my god damn time, but their favourite sentence seems to be "we don't want it to be that sort of gym"...if I speak to manager and he says that sentence, what would your reply be? And also if I say to manager, well I used the legg press to train my legs and it was a valuable piece of equipment to me and many others and if he replies "you don't need it, you can train your legs with other stuff", what would you say to that...because as I imagine the conversation going in my head I can imagine those two sentences been said, and I want to be prepared.

Do you think I should threaten to ring the papers about discrimination also? And also virgin gym doing over the members.

Thanks.

The most vital piece of information ya need day 1 is find a routine to suit your lifestyle and your needs. If you're just doing this to stay fit, go 3 or 4 times a week for 60 mins a session. And do different bodyparts on each day something like this:

Day 1: Chest/Triceps
Day 2: Day off
Day 3: Back/Biceps
Day 4: Day off
Day 5: Legs/Shoulders
Day 6: Day off

That's just an example of how you could do it, but there's hundreds of routines you'll find like this on this forum and others. But the reason I'm making this point to you is, most people that go to gym for first time kinda walk around the gym aimlessly going from machine to machine, one minute they're doing their legs, the next they're doing their chest, the next they're doing their back...nobody works out like that! To start with just try do like 3 sets of 8 reps on each exercise, start off with light weight and go up gradually over the weeks and months to come.

Also I really wish I'd learnt about nutrition before I started, so you need to start learning now if you havent already, the sooner you change the way you eat, and what you eat the better, imo there's no point going to gym and doing weights or cardio if your just gona eat crap like processed food, takeaways, crisps, pop, chocolate, beer etc...althought people have cheat meals and can on occasion treat yourself but am talking about most of society that eat crap all day everyday, am not saying thats what you're, you could have a masters degree in nutrition for all I know haha, but am just saying.

These are the two things I wish people had told me when I joined the gym, a good routine, and to learn about nutrition, I hope that helps.

EDIT: £5.50 a session seems expensive? Can't you find somewhere else, would prob be better paying £30 a month or finding somewhere that does £3 a session, I guess though it depends how many times a week your going to go, and if your consistent?

discrimination

You don't half talk some ****. If you don't like what they're doing there stop training there.

He's right you can train your legs in other ways. You've not really even explained what they've done except remove a few machines. Are they removing them for good? or upgrading them?

Surely you can use your noggin and have a reasonable conversation with the centre manager without needing a script.

It's called a 'circuit' which is what most gym goers normally do and can be very effective. Or a 'full body' which is usually low intensity/high frequency. Whilst I can appreciate you're trying to help however for a complete novice I wouldn't be recommending a 3/4 days split.

If this was my friend I'd be telling him to do a full body 2/3 times a week coupled with some cardio if he wishes. With around 10-12 reps focusing on his form over 2 sets.

Banging someone on a 3/4 day split isn't always the best option. Most likely he'll end up with very severe DOMS from over training something which has never been trained before due to the sheer volume of his first workout, coupled with (assuming) no knowledge of effective stretching he'll be sore and stiff for days. You can't throw people in at the deep end.

SkScotchegg if you're contracted to them and they've changed something that you needed/like using then just see if you can get out of the contract.
If you're not contracted to them then leave and make your reasons for leaving clear.

Gyms change equipment all the time and if it's a space limited place then there's better ways to use the space than a leg press machine...

A million and one ways to train your legs without that machine :)

To echo what Benny has said, a newbie should never start on a split (other than an upper/lower). The body just isn't ready for that intensity so quickly. Programme's have to be periodised so there is time to adapt.

I recently gave my friend a plan consisting of 2 different workouts. 2 sets of 10-12 reps sticking to machines for now. Exercises are different on each workout but all the groups are hit.

Monday: A, Tues: B, Weds: A
Monday: B, Tues: A, Weds: B

He's two weeks in and says he has more left in him come the end of the workout so now I'll drop his reps slightly and add another set to each exercise. For most of us this wouldn't be very effective however for a beginner this is just fine. Sure I could have him freeweight benching, squatting and deadlifting but he'd be exhausted! Not to mention using all the wrong muscles and struggling with form.

Ok, to start with, I think you should talk online how you'd talk to someone in person because I dont really like the way your talking to me there.

2nd I dont want to leave, I like it there, its close to my home, its convenient, I dont drive, I just bike everywhere, and leaving and going to another gym is just more hassle for me, even though Flex's gym prob is another 30 mins further away on bike and prob is a better gym, I'd rather they just not changed anything.

I thought I explained myself quite clear in an earlier post, yeah they've taken the machines away for good and basically said that its because of some of the bigger guys abusing the gym and scaring the other not so hardcore members into leaving and also not putting weights back, and in their words, "we dont want it to be that sort of gym" and "we dont want those sort of people here"...I think there prob is some members that are quite agressive and might have shouted at some of the staff for lack of gym etiquette but I dont think I've ever done anything wrong and its like I'm suffering because of what other people have done. 3 days ago the gym was perfect, but now without the leg press machine its not imo.

And last of all I was asking what would you guys say to those things if the manager says em to get an idea in my head how I'm going to handle the situation, I was hoping maybe I could talk him/her round and convince them that the leg press is vital and that allot of people in the gym use it.

lol, I knew someone was going to post after I said that trying to help the guy with an attitude acting as if they know better, I just knew it. I was giving him advice, plain and simple, its funny how you didnt tell him anything before I posted, but once I tell him what to do you reply saying "no he should do this" lol, I did write "this is an example" and "there's hundreds of routines out there". My whole point was so that he didnt go in the gym and go from machine to machine not knowing what he was doing or without a plan in his head, but I guess that must have gone way over your head...

Oh And I never heard anyone use the word circuit before, I think I'll still with routine thanks.

So what, we gona have a debate now about the leg press machine been rubbish and a waste of time? pffff....yeah I am contracted and I dont want to leave, and yeah I know I can do loads of different exercises for legs but I still liked the leg press, if its good enough for ronnie coleman its good enough for me.

I didn't really want to leave my gym and would have stayed another 2 years maybe but am gona try out that Flex gym and see what happens.

Oh and space wasn't an issue, the gym is massive, it's probably as big as you can imagine a gym to be.

I appologise for my blunt nature partially due to my hangover.

I thought I explained myself quite clear in an earlier post

Your posts aren't often very clear, I'm sure you try, but you do tend to write almost everything you think of as you think it which makes it very hard to read.

Unfortunatley with big chain gyms they want as wide a target market group as possible to bring in as much income as possible and generally speaking aren't fussed about pleasing the minority but the majority.

And last of all I was asking what would you guys say to those things if the manager says em to get an idea in my head how I'm going to handle the situation, I was hoping maybe I could talk him/her round and convince them that the leg press is vital and that allot of people in the gym use it.

I'd say exactly that. If they've not got any other facilities (squat rack, regular leg press with a stack, curl/extension) they you could recommend that they provide one. Unfortunatley not all gyms are perfect mine has several things missing but we have to make do with what we have.

If I blow my own trumpet the example I posted would be more beneficial as he is a beginner. There's nothing wrong with what you've posted as a routine but imo it's not suitable for a novice. The reason I decided to post was to offer my advice. I can't reply to every single post but if I spot something I disagree with then, as this is a discussion forum, I'm entitled to my say.

Oh And I never heard anyone use the word circuit before, I think I'll still with routine thanks.

Circuits are quite popular and much more aerobically taxing than a 3/4 day split as when performed correctly you're sending blood all over the place and your heart rate stays elevated. For example doing sets of leg press, then some over head press, then some B.O.R's, pressups, SLDL etc. So for a beginner it's ideal as it'll help increase their fitness, recovery, VO2 max and they should be able to increase strength and mass too.

Nothing wrong with the leg press at all but there are other ways. It's one of many. You don't need it.

Do any of you find, that when you feel your worst you often look your best?

Oh i have my ups and downs for sure, but today i felt totally lethargic yet i looked great in the mirror.

For me its when I have a day off everything seems to get bigger, I know that sounds strange but thats the way it seems to me.

Not sure about looks but when I feel bad (train hungry/feel lethargic or unwell/have a crap day etc) sometimes I end up beating records!

So guys here's the update. BUCS powerlifting competition at Kidlington and Gosford Leisure Centre. I did manage to get into the 75kg catagory weighing in at 73.1kg :). Warm ups went fine although i do have a massive aversion to having to wear Y-fronts :(.

First was squat. I opened on 140kg which went smoothly, actually it was an A2G squat 'cause I got nervous I would miss the depth. In the end all of my attempts were far too deep because I was nervous of not getting the depth. Next attempt at 147.5kg went fine, final attempt at 155kg I missed but again I went too deep and probably would have got it had I stopped at parallel.

Next was bench. I opened on 85kg, no problems there, then did 90kg which was also not an issue. But I stalled on 95kg, but thats my pb anyway so...

Lastly there was deadlift. I opened on 165kg and I put my stance too narrow so there was unnecessary slowness going on. I did 175kg (previous pb was 170 for 3) next which wasn't too bad. I originally planned to do 185kg for my 3rd but I didn't feel confident so attempted 180kg; that didn't work so well and I missed it.

So...

Squat:147.5kg Bench:90kg Deadlift:175kg Total:412.5kg BW:73.1kg Wilks:299.3

Not too disappointed overall but would have liked to have gotten more pbs (old pbs were squat:150kg bench: 95kg deadlift: 170kgx3). Had a lot of fun though, rest of OUPLC (my club) did well coming first and third in the 75kg unequipped and a lot of pbs smashed. Next time I'll be more careful with pre-competition diet and prep because i was flagging towards the end.

Also there was a world record broken for deadlift; a guy in the 82.5kg equipped (junior??) category got 350kg :O Was awesome!

Now moving onto an HST cycle by recommendation from my brother who is competing tomorrow in the same comp.
