*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

So guys here's the update. BUCS powerlifting competition at Kidlington and Gosford Leisure Centre. I did manage to get into the 75kg catagory weighing in at 73.1kg :). Warm ups went fine although i do have a massive aversion to having to wear Y-fronts :(.

First was squat. I opened on 140kg which went smoothly, actually it was an A2G squat 'cause I got nervous I would miss the depth. In the end all of my attempts were far too deep because I was nervous of not getting the depth. Next attempt at 147.5kg went fine, final attempt at 155kg I missed but again I went too deep and probably would have got it had I stopped at parallel.

Next was bench. I opened on 85kg, no problems there, then did 90kg which was also not an issue. But I stalled on 95kg, but thats my pb anyway so...

Lastly there was deadlift. I opened on 165kg and I put my stance too narrow so there was unnecessary slowness going on. I did 175kg (previous pb was 170 for 3) next which wasn't too bad. I originally planned to do 185kg for my 3rd but I didn't feel confident so attempted 180kg; that didn't work so well and I missed it.

So...

Squat:147.5kg Bench:90kg Deadlift:175kg Total:412.5kg BW:73.1kg Wilks:299.3

Not too disappointed overall but would have liked to have gotten more pbs (old pbs were squat:150kg bench: 95kg deadlift: 170kgx3). Had a lot of fun though, rest of OUPLC (my club) did well coming first and third in the 75kg unequipped and a lot of pbs smashed. Next time I'll be more careful with pre-competition diet and prep because i was flagging towards the end.

Also there was a world record broken for deadlift; a guy in the 82.5kg equipped (junior??) category got 350kg :O Was awesome!

Now moving onto an HST cycle by recommendation from my brother who is competing tomorrow in the same comp.

Sounds good overall, you really should train for full depth squats though, Olympic style. :p A parallel squat is like literally half the range of motion of a full squat, and you'd have nothing to worry about depth wise in future competitions. :)

Parallel is more than half the ROM :p

Also in comp the aim is to hit depth at the most weight you can, not go a2g as heavy as you can :p

To be clear, he does train "full depth" squats - all the time. Also, and don't take this the wrong way, but a parallel squat is definitely not only half the ROM of an a2g (arse to grass) squat. To quote wiki: "top surface of the legs at the hip joint is lower than the top of knees". Depending on your physical makeup there really shouldn't be that much further to go ;) (provided you go slightly below parallel as is recommended)

What he shouldn't have done is do all of his comp day warm ups a2g when there was a mirror available to help get a feel for depth and then end up going too deep on your competitive lifts (fool :p). In a powerlifting competition, where the rules are always going to require a squat to parallel, it would be pretty silly to go ALL the way down. They were being quite strict with the depth calls (which is fair enough) - even a few of the more experienced lifters were caught out on there first lifts, including an international level guy I think.

All in all, not a bad first comp, especially considering he has only been lifting properly for 4 and a bit months. Seriously upsetting to have your little brother slowly creep up to your lifts when you're injured :(

Videos will be posted at some stage, because narcissism rules.

**** me! 350 for a light junior?! That's mental. Anything recorded for it?
Yeah it was nuts, something like a 260kg squat as well...could have been less but it was still ridiculous. I'm pretty sure there was a 180kg bench in the same class!

By recorded do you mean video or officially? Yes to both, the vid will get posted up at some point and there was a lot of paperwork being done by the officials. I'll try and get proper confirmation on the actual record broken, I'm not sure now if it was an age or weight record.

A second, somewhat delayed, brag about my brother's strongman achievements (I posted a video of him competing in 105kg UK's Strongest Man awhile back).

He competed a couple of weeks ago in the World's Natural Strongest Man in Hungary and came 4th. Not bad for someone who usually competes in the under 105kg category. 1st and 2nd were Father (Lazlo Fekete - has the WR for heaviest Atlas Stone I believe) and Son (Hungarians), 3rd was a Swede and 0.5 points behind was my brother.

He featured in a rather cheesy article in the Oxford Mail (http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/archive...607.Firefighter_is_Britain___s_strongest_man/)

Events were:

Atlas Stones 5 – 6 Stones ranging between 100 – 220 kg
Husafel Stone 180 kg for a distance of 25m
Tire Flip 500 kg
Yoke 435kg
Power stairs 175 kg, 225 kg and 275 kg or 300 kg

Some of the competitors (Brother is far left) and Hungarian eye candy for your pleasure!

There comes a point where you just have to concede to being the younger, inferior brother. But - until then - I'm off to the gym! :D

I like how your brother manages to look normal sized in that pic! Stunning achievement.

Dom, it's because I'm a master of time and space. You know this.

Oh I know, my point was to build your strength ass to grass so you never have to worry about your depth, the half the ROM was a slight exaggeration though :p. For me though, I've still got quite a bit of distance (relative) to go from parallel and full depth squat, and I have fairly large legs, 31" thighs and 19" lower legs. But yeah, I just always try my best to get maximum ROM on any lifts I do. Olympic squats = win. :D

Gordy I've reverted back to the 3 day split regime in your sticky. Works best for me as I can completely nail specific bodyparts and give them plenty of recovery time.

My mates are going on about fore-arm exercises, is this something to worry about?

Also my mate and I have a habit of knocking out as many pull-ups as possible at the beginning of every weights session, is this a good idea? I usually do that a 5 minute jog after and then hit the weights.

Just made lots of cookies... and ate too many... :o They're not even protein cookies! lol! :D Still, hand made and worth it! :D

Ah well, it's sunday! You can let yourself go on the weekend! ;)

I had some chips from the chippy last night although I did have a grilled chicken breast with them so I didnt feel quite so bad. They were awesome:D

My week off next week. I really don't want to do it though, I have no nagging injuries and don't feel any niggles that need a rest

I feel like I'm being forced into it though by people saying I should have a week off every so often! That's wasted time in my eyes

Can any of you guys shed any light why it's needed so I feel better, staying away is going to be hard next week

His Wilks score must be insane!

Steedie, could you not do some 'deloading'? Though if your coach has recommended it I'd do what he says. Just spend the time sleeping :)
