*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

There will always be somebody bigger and stronger than you (exception for Ronnie, Dorian, Andy Boulton etc).

You can try your damn hardest and achieve desirable physiques along the way but the majority of our genetics is inferior to theirs unfortunatley :(

No real goals as such, but my hols in July 2009 I got the fitness bug and started swimming. 6 times a week for 1/2 hour front crawl until December next to zero booze and a strict diet. Now only go 3 times a week.

I was over 14 stone being 5'8. Weighed in on Tuesday and now weight just under 10 stone. Gone from 36" waist to 32" which is becoming loose, so it has cost me bucks in new clothes!

Today for the first time I ventured into the gym as there was a class in the pool and beyond my own belief ran 22 mins at 11mph last few minutes spent on a 7mph fast walk on an inclination and by the end of my workout had completed 5 miles!

Absolutely proud of my achievement. I have not done any weights as of yet, but lazily have been using a Slendertone for my abs :p

2010, for me involves sustaining 10 stone and toning up :)

As long as you're true to yourself, **** everyone else. :D

I know I'm giving 100%, and I'm achieving my goals. I will hit 600kg this year. I have dropped BF, and I will get bigger.

I'm pretty interested by the views on close grip or wide grip pulls.

Might just carry on with close grip as I'd begun to try focussing on wide grip.

Well done mate, that's fantastic. Congratulations to you.

I'm actually trying to gain wait right now. I'm 6ft1 and weigh about ~12.5. I'm really trying hard to reach the 13 stone mark but my metabolism is so fast that missing one meal can mess up my progress.

Illness hit me when I returned to uni in early january causing me to drop from 12.9 stone to 12.2 stone so i'm climbing the slippery slope again.

Yeah, some of the top tier lads were seriously training and taking their supplements by the time they were 15 so even starting training at 19 I was way behind. Oh well you are never too old :D

Indeed - If you keep the way you are by the time you hit 30 you'll be monsterous! :D By the time you get there I'll have to be on HRT no doubt :o :p

Some people can train hard for years and still not show a massive improvement as it also has a lot to do with genes etc.

Complete tripe.

Sure, genetics will play SOME role in your shape and your genetic potential. However seldom anyone ever gets close to their potential. You can still make dramatic changes to your body and composition no matter what your genetic structure is like.

It's about how you train, what you eat, and your lifestyle.

There are no excuses for 99% of people.

I was always told, getting in shape and stronger is 80% Diet, 10% Working out and 10% Determination.

I go by that since I sorted my diet and routine, along with making a habit of it all, I've done wonders since I started in June 09.

Indeed. Diet and lifestyle are the major contributing factor. Clearly damaging your muscles is also important for muscle growth, but it takes all the factors. You could be the most genetically lucky person, without hard work and a good regime you'll get nowhere.

Hah I wish I could carry on how I have progressed so far, would be 100kg+ heavier in 10 years :p:D

Some people can train for years and not show amazing improvement. But if you are training hard even with a rubbish diet you will make noticeable improvements. I didn't really change my diet at all when I first started out, but I busted my ass with what I had available. As I said above it also gets much much much harder to make any gains at all the closer you get to your genetic potential. At 6ft that's going to be ~200lbs really dialed in, and a lot of people can't except that so pile on the BF and make gains even less noticeable.

EDIT: Just watching the Dorian LEG video. Apparently not a single squat through out his professional career. http://mdtv.musculardevelopment.com...the-md-seminar-dorian-yates-leg-training.html another good video IMO.

Dorian has never been big on squats for leg development

If your goal is purely competition bodybuilding then it's fair enough I suppose. I know some big big boys with massive defined legs who don't do any squatting/deadlifting.

Do they have powerful legs? Are they strong? No a flippant comment, genuinely interested. :)

I would imagine they are 'quite strong' but have plenty of potential for strength improvement. Due to generally being worked with higher rep range sets the strength fibres aren't going to be taxed that much as the endurance fibres. (need to get my level 2 book out!)

As Dorian said the first part to give out on a squat is the lower back so it wouldn't matter if I had 40" quads if I had the core of an 11 year old girl I wouldn't be able to squat ****. Plus the fact they don't want to over work the glutes as to give the illusion of bigger quads, hams, back etc is going to provide another weak link.

Interesting he wasn't asked a question about high volume leg work. All those Americans ask pritty much the same few questions over and over. I swear he spoke about lunges about 3 times.

Like Benny said their not as strong as they could be, but thats not what they train for.

One of them is a huuuuge black dude (and ripped to shreds) who can put 10 reps out on 140kg bench with 0 effort, yet he can't get a 180kg deadlift 2" off the ground [he never deadlifts, just had a go once when I was doing it]...but it deosn't bother him, he's not interested in lifting huge weights! I've asked him about strongman days but he says its just not his thing.

It does make me go  when you see people not training legs or add big compound lifts to their work outs. However, I can smugly know in the back of my mind that I'm better well rounded and developed than them :D
