*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

You do not gain mass by drinking protein shakes. You gain mass by lifting weights. You only need shakes if you cannot get enough nutrients from your diet.

Protein shakes will not give you mass a calorie surplus and resistance training will.

If your diet is pants drinking shakes is a waste of money you might as well burn it or throw it down the toilet.

Start a new thread asking for c&c on your current diet. Then once your diet is on track consider supplementing it if you need to.

Interesting.

I have starting lifting weights (almost 2 months at gym) and have found my appetite has gone up so do eat larger portions now. I am trying to eat smaller portions but more frequently as sometimes I do go awhile without a meal. My diet isn't that bad, I don't eat chocolate or snacks full of sugar and I don't have fizzy drinks. I only drink water and milk once in awhile. After every gym session I have a full meal, mainly chicken. I think I just need to eat fruit more frequently and milk a lot more, full fat - which is one reason I want some nice flavoured protein shake to mix it with.

It is not a food replacement, its simply an addition to my current diet. I weigh just over 11 and a half stones, and hope to add a stone in 6 months.

I'm on the verge of giving in and building my own gym in the garage - I've had like 4 gym memberships in 2-3yrs and always changing due to life etc. I realize it will be pricey to start with but in the long run, save me some cash/petrol/time etc - plus the other half will use it @ weekends.

Or this:
p6935090dt.jpg

Probably a bit more sturdy etc but same exercises and $449 brand new.

Will be getting plates, bars and what not second hand and some DB's, and then slowly keep adding to it :)

get this one, its the one i have, and the only bad thing i can say is that after looking at some other power racks rated for the same weight the safety bars look a bit thin.

plus points are, pull-ups, chins, dips can be done with it without separate equipment. you can also add a lat pulley attachment later on when you save up to do even more exercises. overall i think this gives the best bang for buck.

if you are building a home gym, make sure wherever it is located is well insulated and warm. mine has been in my garage for a couple of years now and when i move house next year, i will either be custom building an extension/garage or converting the built in garage into a gym. this means fully insulated with heating and electricity and a normal door, not a garage door. with the amount of cold weather here in scotland, it makes my current gym very demotivating to use for several months of the year due to how cold the equipment/area gets, it has electricity, but zero heating and zero insulation, its like training outdoors basically, which may be good if i was in miami, but im not lol.

not trained in exactly 3 weeks now, i think my shoulder has fully healed now, so i will start back sometime next week hopefully.

dude just buy any protein powder from a decent supplier, all these people saying get your diet into shape, although it is a good idea, adding a shake into your diet isn't exactly going to do you any harm, it can only benefit you.

then as you do more reading about nutrition and add to your knowledge you can refine your diet to help you as well.

real protein is better than powdered protein but sometimes you need that powdered protein too when you cant be bothered cooking or short of time, etc.

Can't sleep cant rest, just this minute crawled out from the gym after cardio, weights and boxing! At first light I'm going on a three hour walk in the snow around Littlehampton lol. Why I hear you ask because I'm slowly going nuts with the current state of things and this is the only thing I know that can keep my mind occupied.

I figured this would get the better reception, glad to hear you have one and like it. The other one (I have seen in store) is very similar in build quality, just a different layout I guess + it's on sale. But I do think the Powertec cage will probably be best in the long run. Hmm weather, yeah its 35-40's in the summer and -10's in the winter lol  Oh well

Do tell more? Everything cool? At least you have something to focus on!

So sorry to hear that mate, my Aunt is going through the exact same thing right now :(
Had a 3-hr op on Monday and then a 6-hr op on Tuesday. Spirits are high though.

Keep your head up and just be there for her, keep her cheerful, she'll come through and have a great 2011!

It's the top part, like where my shoulder blades are.

EDIT: Your not aloud to take your top off in the gym but I wish I could coz sometimes I think I'd like to do some exercises with my top off so I can see my back more, ya know what I mean, so you can focus on keeping it straight. Eventually I would also like my own gym in the garage at home like what you guys have been talking about in this thread, I'm thinking of buying some equipment later this year when I can afford it, like a squat wrack, bench, DB's, bars, plates etc, would make life easier. Although I do like going to a gym coz your there to work so you get on with it but sometimes gyms annoy me like the staff and the other members and the lack of gym etiquette people have. Also when I looked at prices of equipment online it all seems expensive but I guess when you buy one part at a time, it will all comes together over many years.

Be carefull with watching yourself in the mirror on the side with heavy weights as you can easily injure yourself.

I can vouch for my brothers way of doing it ^ cause I've seen it help, but the thing which really helped my friend was that I gave him some simple core exercises to do everyday or so from rowing that are basically really high reps or just steady state stuff, for example making a bridge with feet and shoulders on the floor so in a way thrusting upwards but just holding it for 2-3 mins maybe, or 20-30 reps of dorsal raises, etc...

...I know these exercises work from a stability point of view but what was good was that the enabled my friend to 'feel' what his back should be like in a neuro-muscular way.

If you want to give it a try I'd be more than happy to give you a list of exercises. Like I said I don't know if it will help because everyone is different.

Yeah sure mate, I'll try anything, always willing to learn.

I haven't heard of dorsal raises before? Also didnt know what exercise you meant when you wrote "for example making a bridge with feet and shoulders on the floor so in a way thrusting upwards but just holding it for 2-3 mins maybe", if you got any links to articles or youtube videos, I'd prob be able to take it in better.

Thanks in advance.

No no no no. Seriously, no.

Diet is more important, protein shakes are a waste of money until your diet is sorted.

Sure it won't do you any harm, but it's a waste of time, and you'll be ****ing money down the drain. It WONT benefit him unless he's training properly and more importantly eating properly.

Get the diet as right as possible first, THEN refine it. It takes YEARS of tweaking and practice to get it right and years of dedication to have an effect.

You should never "not be bothered" - if you have that attitude then this game isn't for you.

You won't be able to add a stone in 6months. Maximum natural muscle gains for the year are between 10-12lbs so just short of a stone if your diet is bang on as is your training. If you put on a stone in 6 months most of it will more than likely be fat.

This.

Clipsey: Go for the powerrack. I looked at that one for a while but decided to get a slightly cheaper one as the pulley was also cheaper too. If you can get the high/low pulley and dipping bars then you're onto a winner with it. And deffinatley insulate which ever room it's in as I had to wear gloves when squatting on Thursday as my hands went numb from the bar.

Tank: Hang in there mate.

Tank I'm sorry to hear, I hope all goes well. Like people are saying keep your head up and look to the future.

OT: I did my entire HST day yesterday in 45mins after a 12oz burger lots of chips and some onion rings. Was not fun, I could not lift ny arms at the end of it :(. Feel great today though :)

Whats the best site for buying gym equipment, like squat wracks, benches, DB's, bars, plates, etc, need some good sites to look at with cheapest prices?

EDIT: Also which parts would you buy 2nd hand, if any? And which parts wouldnt you buy 2nd hand, if theres any reasons not to?

Thanks.

http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/bodymax-cf415-squat-and-dip-rack-with-spotter-catchers.php that represents fantastic value for money imo, you can do squats, dips and bench presses on it. obviosuly there's a lot of stuff to be found there as well. :)

I'd buy anything second hand, no reason not to. Make sure it's quality sturdy stuff though, not crap from Argos with bars that will bend on your warmup on deadlifts. Ebay for this, as well as local ad sites such as gumtree work a treat as well.

Yeah think I will go for the Power-rack in the end if my trip to England at Xmas is not too expensive :p Going to go measure the area now and see what I'm working with.
It's going to be freezing in there, my only hope is that a little space heater does the trick.

I had to trim mine slightly to get mine in as it's sideways on through a passageway on the side of our house. Can see in the link above. Trimmed about 2" off the ends. The powertec one was larger than the CF475 from PHF from what I remember. Looks v.nice though
