*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

Couple vids from the Crossfit by my gym, pretty easy to see why its popular tbh. Normal gyms have no sense of community or learning in the same way that martial arts/boxing gyms (for instance) do, and that's what keeps people coming. We get that vibe from these forums, but it's pretty rare to have it IRL (I know people like Icecold/Dom have good places but it's really not common).

Mirin' goblet squat tekkers? :p

Gloucester Road near the cricket ground, there's actually another one in Clifton somewhere aswell (Crossfit-Bristol).

Amazing there's two of these but no powerlifting or oly clubs outside of the Uni's (afaik?).

As much as Crossfit does annoy me (though no experience IRL so I'm hesitant to completely ignore it) I am well jelly of their gyms. Giant warehouses with 10's of barbells and bumper plates galore. There's actually a Crossfit place opened up literally around the corner from my Gym and I almost wanna go in there but just for a normal workout.

Couldn't you just go along and use the equipment for a normal workout if you're not getting in the way? Maybe just ask to be sure as a courtesy but I don't imagine that they'd be desperate to turn away business just because you're not following the same programme as them.

There's a few powerlifting and weightlifting clubs, just need to find them :)
Most won't be specific for those though as its too much money with too little interest.

Might have to look the Gloucester Rd one up and have a visit :)

They only open for the WODs at certain times with pre-booked allocations. It's not just a gym the rest of the time.

No need for shrugs, deads and heavy farmers walks/pick ups will do all you need tbh
Ill try the farmers walks, how would i go about doing that. Walk from one side of the room to the other as 1 set or walk for 30 seconds. How come it needs to involve walking cant i just stand still and hold it...so it will be just a farmer:p Ill google pickups im not sure what they are.

If you're an experienced lifter or know somebody who does them well, power cleans.
Im currently doing barbell clean and press then db lat raise super set. Ive done power cleans before, i guess i could throw them in.

Ah this is problem #892 with crossfit, and actually something that really does bug me about crossfit.

They tend to not let you in unless you're doing one of their specific WODs or classes, despite, as has been mentioned, almost all of them being equipped with Rogue monster racks or stuff..

Yep and most restrict walk in punters too as it apparently negatively affects the normal WOD doing members. Which kinda makes sense. They are selling a community spirit as well as the gym. To the point that they will not just take members money who don't turn up, they will give your place to someone else so that each class is as full as possible.

That's slightly unfortunate then, seems a shame to waste good equipment by not using it.

Seems a bit daft really, there's more than one way to do exercise and have it benefit you so to be so restrictive about who can use the equipment and what they can do with it is at best a bit short sighted.

OK I'm putting together a 'stuff' routine for the next 4/5 weeks.

It's purposefully made up of less normal exercises because I want something interesting and completely different to Stronglifts for a while, just because :p.

This is the selection so far, and I want to split it into A/B days.

Code:
Hip - BSS
Hip - RDL
Chest - DB Flat
Chest - DB Incline
Chest - Cable X-Over (High/Low/High/Low)
Bi - Straight bar curls (strict)
Bi - Incline Hammer Curls
Extras - KB Swings

Quad - Front Squatz
Quad - Reverse Lunge (BB for lulz)
Back - Underhand BOR
Back - Kroc Rows
Back - Pulldown
Tri - CGBP
Tri - Tri Ext (DB Hammer grip)
Extras - Calf press (toes on leg press)
Renegade Rows

Shoulder - Seated DB Press (Arnolds?) (One arm?)
Shoulder - Lateral Raise (Cable)
Shoulder - Facepulls Cable

Core -
Hanging Leg Raise
Plank
Pallof Press
Zercher Squatz (Anything similar to this?)
TRX Roll-outs

Any thoughts/comments guys? I'm not sure how to squeeze it into A/B yet, I might just have to go 3-day split but with it all.

There's none specifically that I know of but there's a few proper gyms about. LA Gym in Easton, Empire Fitness in St. Pauls and Ministry of fitness in Kingswood spring to mind.
