*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

I can't really cancel it besides the other ones near me are either a lot more expensive for the time I need it or they just won't do it.

This one is a local one a lot of friends go to as well hence the decision to go there.

I am going to be going there until september then I am moving to University.
This is to get me started :)

He's not got a contract smart arse :p :D

Phone posting fail. :( :D

A bar and some weights, you say...

How much weight? And what is your training history like (i.e. national powerlifting comp standard/novice/whatever)?

They had the fixed rubber hex dumbells, up to 30kg I saw but there was a whole rack so I assume larger than that and then they have the standard bars and EZ curl bar.
They had cast iron plates as well up to I am not sure but again it is a "proper" gym so I am assuming they have a full set up to whatever! :p

And I am a novice with regards to lifting weights. I have just been doing work at home with dumbells (10kg :o) and just a lot of cardio eg running and cycling.

And what do you want out of the gym? Big muscles? Good cardiovascular capacity? Or strength?

Well I am aiming to get stronger, lose some of the flab and just generally be fitter.
I don't want to bulk up and be huge as I want to get back playing football properly once again.

So improving my cardio and upper body is crucial to start off with?

I wouldn't worry too much about bulking up and being huge - it's not something that generally happens by accident.

Why just the upper body? In a simplistic sense your body prefers to be in balance so it's important to not just concentrate on one part of your body.

I believe there maybe a leg press. I'm trying to think back. I just noted down what I saw and knew straight away.

Is there nothing I can do as an alternative?

In two months?

You will make perfusion gains (look bigger for a week) and - depending on your diet - lose some flub in the process.

However, you ideally need a decent free weights set to get good, functional gains. Machines can certainly get you started, but considering you're going to change it all up in 2 months time?

How determined are you to make this work?

As I said there are a good set of both the rubber hex dumbbells there, the standard changeable ones so you can slide different weights on and Olympic bars and EZ bar.

Or is that not what you mean?

I am very determined to make this work now. I have hesitated joining the gym for so long but now I have done I want to get started!

As soon as I move to uni I am joining the from what I saw a quite impressive gym so I am not going to start this now and then finish when I leave. I am going to carry straight on again but in September I will have more equipment to use! And more time!

I'd suggest (initially) having a look at Sronglifts (check out some of hte logs in the Log subforum), and having a think about how you can apply it to your gym...

I have looked at the strong lifts actually, got the PDF and I have watched the YT videos etc.

I just thought that instead of limiting myself to just doing the squats and deadlift etc I should use the other equipment in the gym as it would be more beneficial.

Hence why I asked on here but I mean if people think that its best to do stronglifts then who am I to argue!

I completely forgot about the sticky.

I have found the one by Gordyr.

Not the other ones though, the gordyr one looks like a good starting point. They have benches in the gym so I can carry out the exercises he has listed there with the free weights.

The bonus with strong lifts is that it lets you focus on the main compound lifts before confusing you with isolation work. It's a brilliant beginners routine.

Wrong, squats and DL's are the most beneficial things you will do and they will not limit you - they will set you freeee!

And don't you forget it! :p
