Write up

OK so I have to say the last few days leading up to the comp I was getting a little nervous and thinking over my lifts to make sure they were good. I was happy with how my bench press and deadlifts were, but having not squatted without a mirror I was concerned I'd not hit depth or cause my hip to die again.

I arrived first with my little bro and proceeded to weigh in, where I made 81.7kg. Really impressed with my home scales because this is the exact weight I'd been maintaining all week. I gave my openers and proceeded out to the hall to have some food. Ice and Dom turned up a short while later looking juicy.

We did some mobility work before starting our squat warm ups and ice/dom got a few looks as they did some crazy band/bondage routine in the warm up room. I smashed my shoulders and did a bit of pec rolling. It was then time for squat warm up, which was fun as ice pointed out the floor was super slippy. Lucky one of the squat racks was on carpet so we cracked on.

The nerves were still there during warm ups and I made a few blunders. Squatting with more weight on one side of the bar, doing a heavy single with no belt, and completely forgetting to roll my legs. As ice said, we messed up the timing of the warm ups so didn't have much time between finishing those and our openers. I was 3rd up after Dom.

I choose 170 for my opener, it's an easy weight for me and meant I could get a good feel for the stage before doing something heavier. I got out there and got under the bar and for some reason was waiting for a non-existent command to unrack. After being kindly told I can go, I proceed to smash out 170. Next up was 190 and again this wasn't too much bother. I planned 200 next but ice said I should add 2.5kg for a little PB, so I did (it's a trap!). I was pumped walking up to the last attempt, I know I've failed 200kg a few times in the past, but that doubt was gone. I got under the bar and did a pretty good walk out, braced myself and went for it. I surprised myself how this went up, my best squat PB to date! The depth on my squats was pretty deep for me, no idea where this came from, I can only assume this is what 'felt' right, and using a mirror I had been stopping myself a little higher.

Bench press next, my lift where I'd put in a big opener for the class. Clearly this guy is a dick, I heard ice say ;) I was talking to ice about not having a hand off from the spotters and he wasn't sure it was possible - I mean what kind of idiot does this?! After ice and dom did their openers and I heard they had weird hand offs my mind was made up, I asked them to step away from bar 'I got dis brah'. Smashed out 140, and left the stage, then there was some confusion about what one of the judges was trying to tell me about my lift - something to do with my head.. but it didn't come up and I got pass, weird. Next up 150 and I have a nice clean rep, but this time I understood the issue they had with my head. Looks like my head was too far up the bench and off the edge a bit, making it hard to judge head lift. A pass was given still. Last up 155, only having done this once before I was pumped. I setup, made sure my head was good, and commenced the lift. Surprisingly, it was a really good rep, not the major grindfest I was expecting.

We moved onto deadlifts, and needed to warm up dat PC. Ice looks at my vibrams and says I should change into my deadlift socks and slippers.... what? I thought I could do deads in my vibrams. FFFFUUUU! I thought it was good night sweet comp, but luckily ice and dom managed to track down a spare set, phew, that was close. 220 first on the bar, no problems. I could feel fatigue creeping into the lifts now, the finish line was insight. Next up 240, and I got myself pumped up to smash it out. I gave it a good go and it went up really well. My next planned weight was 250 so I walk over to let the organisers know, to which Matt (ice and dom's big welsh friend) gave me a WTF look, and told me 255 at least... and in my testosterone fueled state I accepted. I've only every pulled 250 once before, and this was in the gym, fresh, and not having done 8 singles already. The time came, and after some pep talking from the guys, I went full beast mode and pulled 255kg! Such great feels to finish off my first comp.

Such an amazing day. It goes so quickly, you're in a constant daze of smelling salts, screaming and heavy ass lifting. I'm really happy with what I've achieved and I doubt I'd have done any where near as good if it was for Ice and Dom, so thank you for everything.

It was nice to meet FF for the first time, he's a top guy. Thanks to Steedie, Delvis and FF for the support on the day, it was good to have you there.

I have to say I've been to numerous bodybuilding shows, and this trumped them in every way. No arrogance, no arrogant postulating, no feather spreading. Everyone was supporting one another, cheering and everyone was chipping in to help.

Also, to me, it's FAR more impressive - strength/power of some of these people were just intoxicating to watch. Don't get me wrong, the prep work that goes into BB to get into condition is no easy feat, as well as the determination and diet necessary to build those muscle (I'm talking in the natural world). However, I'm afraid to me it has NOTHING on this sort of performance.

I agree fully, but like you I have to respect everything that they do before hand to get to where they are.
That's the difference in the 2 sports though, both have an end goal - to perform as best as possible on the comp day - however the actual comp is a different beast.
1 is looking your best, you look "great" but you aren't showing off how you got there. The other is exactly how you go there, even more so with PB lifts on the day :)

Fuuuuuuuuuuuu 70 mins till my video uploads

EDIT: vids are uncropped, so there may be screaming from dom so yeah :D

You are welcome :p.

Thanks for looking after the videos guys, really appreciate it and the pictures are awesome. Also thanks for coming along, it was a thoroughly bloody good day with everyone there.

I'm still absolutely dead. I was in bed my 9:30 last night and I've only just re-emerged. I don't think I'll be doing anything useful today :p. I am, however, looking forward to Steedie's bodybuilding routine that he said he would put together for this week for Ice and I. Gonna be all kinds of pump :D.

I'm all kinds of ****** today, think I'm going to feast on a large dominos for lunch.

Lol LiE you know your not supposed to make your 3rd attempt look as easy as your opener :)

:D weird I know.

Can anyone recommend a good Chest / tris session for tonight?

I usually do something like..

BB Bench,
DB Flys
Cable Crossovers
Close grip chest press (on machine)
Dips
Tricep Kickbacks.

I fancy mixing it up a touch. Maybe Incline DB press somewhere?

Im interested in what kind of routines some of you more aesthetically pleasing folk use.

Can do crossovers in many shapes and forms to be honest. Keep the cross overs and do the DB press instead of the flyes. Or remove the kick backs and add in the stuff you want, entirely up to you :)

Yeah good point.

I generally do them like this as opposed to a straight flying motion across my chest.

Think ill do..

Flat BB press
Incline DB Press
Cable Crossovers
Dips
Tricep press.

Just been feeling like ive been repeating things too often lately. Just needs mixing up. Think ill go heavy tonight. Maybe just go for 6 reps with big weight on my pressing movements.

Particularly enjoyed the "Kushty" you got from Ben on your 3rd deadlift :p.

You had a fantastic first comp, well done on making it look easy ;). Me and Scott will have a look at when seems best for our next comp with cycles and all that and let you know, I think April sounds good though so it will probably be then.

Scott and I are having a pizza backload on Wednesday for extra gains :D.

Congrats again man.

Oh and I just watched that Competition vid..

What a beast. Well done Lie you made the lifts look easy man. I weight about 90kg and Ive only ever managed to bench 105kg. Your dedication and effort is paying off.

Im working on my deadlifts again at the minute but not pushing beyond 180kg at the minute because I think 200kg would snap me in half :)

Very impressive stuff!

My friends mate at home is a strong lad too, he just sent me a link..

He weighs 73kg.

I have a lot of work to do! :D

Right kiddies, time for the video:

As has been said, absolutely EPIC day followed....BUT! It couldn't have happened without something happening to me at least once. So naturally my car decided to blow up on the way down to Steedies:

Needless to say, I happened to bring a bottle of water with me so managed to make it to Stoodles in time. I was brave, I was told FF called shotgun in Stoodles car..."***?" I questioned, the **** wasn't even there to call shotgun so I stole the seat. Naturally I received lots of abuse from FF when he turned up, he then proceeded to blend me.

We saw Icecolds mobility center which was awe inspiring :X The comp started, and soon enough the 83kg class was done and dusted. It was just pure class, as mentioned shame about Ice's fails, still shifted some epic numbers despite the set backs, Dom as Steedie said was just hilarious due to the fact he screamed down the stage then continued to read the Science mag :D And of course, LiE's first comp and he shifted some brilliant numbers despite this, well done.

Roll on the big boys, I have some of their videos, so may upload them later but I have no idea on the weights shifted off the top of my head. I felt pretty pathetic to be honest, especially when some *** comes out and squats more than your 3-lift max ;) haha

Congrats to all, can't wait for the next one :)
