I really don't lift enough yet to even justify these kind of shoes :p

My gym's clientele has changed massively over the past year. All the guys who were serious about body building and strength are gone and all it seems are there now are bro lifters and complete newbies. You do have to laugh at the guys who bench 100+ then need 2.5 plates under their heels to squat 100 to about 20 degrees. :p

I go to Pure which is same, but I go during the unsocial hours so at least there's far fewer people around and plenty of equipment to play with. It is actually pretty well equipped and they even put a fancy crossfit rack with coloured plates and an extra bench rack recently.

Only real annoying omission for a gym of this size is the lack of a simple hyperextension bench, manager's response is that they already have one of those machine monstrosities that cover lower back.

Finally recovered from my cold - literally the fastest I have ever known a cold to come and go.

Got back to the gym, completed the final week of the squat program and set a new PB at the end - wasn't aiming to at all and it was comfortable too. Very pleased. Chest and arm day tomorrow, deadlifts on Sunday :)

Anyone used one of these Skulpt Chisel devices which can measure bf% for each muscle zone reasonably accurately? Also has some kind of muscle quality rating system too.

The only reliable methods of body fat testing are the professional ones like DEXA or BodPod but even then the person operating the equipment can affect the result. Those body fat percentages in pictures tables combined with scales are probably enough for most people unless you're a physique competitor.

North of £100 going off a quick google, in London at least. Example.

Lower back and glutes in particular are some of the last places body fat stored in men will go. Going by something like this is fine really:

... although bump everything up a few percent because if you count visceral fat in, even being stage lean from what I've read you're very likely to be dead if your body fat is sub 4-5% as a male. I remember when Alberto Nunez got DEXA'd when he was absurdly peeled he was about 6% and the nurse said that was about as low as he could realistically go without his health starting to deteriorate severely.

Just remember that lean mass has a massive impact on how the percentages actually look too:

But in general, men are usually a high percentage than they think they are and women are lower than they think they are!

Hey all,

Just wondering if someone can point me in the right direction.
I've convinced a friend to come to the gym with me, he's rather overweight (~26st) and I'm not sure where's best to start for someone that size?
He's looking to lose some weight and get strong, I'm hoping to get him in the gym habit then help nudge his diet :D

Stronglifts.

I'll most likely only get him out once a week, until he can get the habit, so would it be worth doing anyway?
Keeping in mind this person has been sedentary for probably 20 years.

What else were you planning on doing with him? He could do cardio for one day a week and just wind up with bad knee pain and feel like rubbish... Or he could do Stronglifts and get his pump on...

Zero impact stuff to begin with, I'm an ex 24 stone+ guy!

The desire to change has to come from him though, if he's not ready to change anything you say or do is redundant, don't beat yourself up over it. I was a serial yo-yo dieter until something clicked, not sure what it was that clicked but I had to want it for myself.

I had planned to do weights, It was just that Stronglifts was a 3 times a week plan, I wasn't sure if there was maybe somewhere better to start.

Yeah, I understand you can't force change on a person, it was just for the first time we lived close to each other so I suggested coming to the gym with him and he sounded keen.
So I was just wanting to have advice available from the get go so he can get into the habit etc.
