The 5 year plan to £50k

CBA reading through the whole Thread but I'm guessing a 5yr plan to £50k is turning in to a 50yr plan to £5k instead.

OP is further along the line. He has done some decorating, got a cat and a Toyota Yaris.

Not sure if he will get to 50k in the 4 years or so years remaining, but meh, at least there has been some movement! :p

Blimey, wife and i are on a lot less than OPs wage. A vastly lot less!! And thats our wages combined!!

to be fair its not that hard nowadays to earn 50k if you are preapred to work hard even with limited skills/qualifications.

I have friends who are hgv operators and high pressure water jetting operatives who earn 50k a year.

Fair enough they work 70 hour weeks but its doable.

Your post isn't a reflection of anything else other than you and your wife are both individually near the poverty line. While that must not be ideal for you, it has no bearing on other people's ability to get skills and earn more money.

A myth surely?!

Nope. They were talking about that on question time this week. They said that unlike other sectors tube drivers have had a strong and active union and their wages rises have kept their rate of pay very competitive.

Its actually £49,673 after the 3 (not 6 as I said earlier) months training and £30,166 whilst training.

After 5 years this rises to £60k per annum.

The deal they have rejected this week is £1,200 payrise and £2,000 bonus for working on one of the all night service lines.

Meanwhile teachers, firemen, police etc all start on around £23k.

And lastly the annual holiday entitlement is 43 days holiday for a tube driver plus the average working hours is 36 hours a week.

Lastly the only qualification needed is GCSE in Maths and English.

Don;t get me wrong, I don't think i could do it. It would drive me mad been underground all day.

And Fox, yes there is a massive waiting list and hard to get in. Of course there is when you look to see that in 5 years you will be on £60k per annum (well probably more like £67k with the annual payrises the unions get for them) for 36 hours and 43 days holiday. I was just pointing out that there are jobs out that that pay more than 50k per annum which dont require skills or qualifications.

In fact Tube drivers are paid more per hour than MP's

Bloody hell. And all this time I thought it was daily mail propaganda. They're racking it in.

As for the OP. I'm rather disappointed in you. 30 and only on 27k. Perhaps that's a little harsh. Perhaps things would be different if you lived in a city like London.

Anyways, you're still alive and kicking. So plenty of time to make it work.

for them to be striking is a disgrace.

wtf do they think they deserve more? they don't even apply the brakes any more. just push the button for the doors.

that's unions for you.

Thats why more than 50% of Londoners dont support the tube drivers strike.

Surely just doing the same job but in London would get OP significantly closer to 50K. Living expenses are a little different, but the 50K objective would be closer :p
