The Acer ONE Thread

I took the plunge and splashed £198 on the white 8gig version from the big supermarket. So far I an liking the little beastie a lot. Have never used Linux before so it will take me a bit of time to get used to it after 15 years of Windows and MsDos but so far it looks pretty good. Anyone got any tips on how to make bbc iplayer stream better, it seems very slow and jolty and always buffers up, whereas Youtube is very smooth.

Cant help with the drivers I was looking for one for my portable colour printer i have but cant find one for linux anywhere.
After over 2 weeks im loving the little thing more and more done a lot of office work in the open suite in linux today lots of open office doc and presentations so quick and easy to use and very compact little thing id recommend it to anyone now.

Let me know how you get on WatchTower as im looking at getting a t-mobile PAYG dongle for surfing away from home.

I am tempted to buy one as it would be handy to take with me when i 'fix' relatives PC's etc. Would it be ideal for that or would a bigger notebook with a CD drive be better?

Notebook with a CD/DVD writer would be better in case you need to burn a CD/DVD. There's a bigger probability that a PC can boot from a CD/DVD drive than from a USB or memory card.

Hi folks I just found ths website full of XP drivers for the Acer Aspire one.

Link

I thought this would be helpful to anyone that wanted to install XP.

YAY :D

So far just messed around with the os and installed a few things like warzone 2100 / Quake3. Lack of wireless in my house at the moment but will be getting an access point soon. It will get a lot of use at uni though.

*excuse my horrible webcam pic*

I quite fancy the 120g Netbook myself. I think the 8g is just too small. Plus, i think i would be installing more than 8g's worth.

Is it easy to transfer existing cd/dvd software onto a USB pendrive for installation into an Acer?

I started off with a Blue 8GB Linux One, had it about a month got fed up with Linux as it's just too limiting. The Nice Blue colour is a finger print magnet and the novelty of Blue soon faded and 8GB SSD plus 16GB SD card were too slow to run Windows.

Then i sold it and bought a White 120GB Linux One, I immediately Installed XP SP3 (full install) and the pleasure of being able to install drivers and software i'm used to was great. It feels about as fast as my MacBook (I know it isn't) and the White although it's more of a pearl white colour looks far better than the blue and it doesn't show up all those finger prints.

I've owned both and can say in all honesty don't bother with the Blue or Linux and get the White with 120GB HD you will like and use it allot more :)

How did you manage installing things without a CD drive? Much hassle?

For my Windows install i used an external drive but most other stuff i either copied to a USB stick on my main rig and installed from that or downloaded and installed.

I did have a go at the USB windows install but it didn't go well for me so i just popped down to the local PC shop and bought a external DVD Writer for £39.95 which worked like a charm :)

I take my One out on the road as I'm a delivery driver and can use Autoroute to plan my routes and when i get some free time i can watch videos and play Spore, Starcraft or Warcraft 3 and if I'm extremely lucky and find a WiFi hotspot I can do a bit of surfing :D
