The Acer ONE Thread

I have just bought an Acer One running Linpus Linux Lite v1.0.7.E. I'm totally new to this OS. My problem is that Firefox 2 loads up as though it is the first time every time - with the Wecome to Firefox page. I can't change my home page and can't add any bookmarks. Does anyone know how to solve this? I have no idea how to remove and reinstall it, or how to install Firefox 3 as an alternative. I've tried the Acer One forum, but no one can help.

Home page and other options are under

Edit - preferences.

And for bookmarks, there is a bookmarks tab just as usual.

Thanks, but I know how to change the home page and add bookmarks - Firefox simply won't let me. When you try to change the home page there is no OK button to click. Also on the odd occasion I have managed to get it to accept a bookmark, as soon as I quit Firefox, the bookmark is lost. I think this is because Firefox opens as the Welcome page each time, so nothing is saved. I guess I need to know how to stop it opening on the Welcome page, as though it's the first time I've used the browser.

Has anyone seen the 160GB 6 Cell versions for sale in the UK yet?
I see people in the US are now receiving them and numerous places are listing them as 'in stock'.

From other forums its been said that the 160gb 6 cell version may not come to the UK. Could always buy the 120 gb now and get a 3rd party 6 cell battery if in a hurry.

Not had this problem, but perhaps the OK button is hidden off the bottom of the screen?

Anyone having trouble with the WiFi not connecting to a Orange Livebox?
A friend of mine just bought one and cannot get it to connect, we have manually tried the dns and gateway server inputting these rather than autodetecting the settings but to no avail?
I know the livebox is rubbish but hes stuck with it for another 6 months, any help appreciated.

Thanks
M

Ordered a white 512mb 120GB 3-Cell version tonight.
Risk of Import duties on a 6-Cell version from the US far outweighed the cost saving.
Also ordered 1GB SODIMM in prep for upgrading to 1.5GB and have seen some 6-Cell batteries on the bay that are in the UK for under 50 notes.

I wonder if Acer will sell the 6 cell battery separately. I'd sure buy one.

They do @ £75.00. I can't link to the store for obvious reasons

If these are the 6600mAh batteries, then they actually have 9 cells. Pictures over at the aspire one forums.

I know how you feel Linux is completely un-user friendly. You have to be master programmer to get stuff to work. I just got fed up of it because it sucks and put Windows on mine.

AAO arrived today.
Really impressed with it.
Got a white 512MB version although for some reason my memory upgrade hasn't arrived yet.

Already blown the linux install away and installed XP and am intending to dual boot with Ubuntu when I get around to it.

Battery life seems pretty good (2hr+) on the 3-Cell.

Gonna try some older games on it tomorrow after I've taken an image of the disk.

Not used a netbook before, but I can really see the appeal for a very basic net surfing machine.

Can't get over how small it is :D

Those wanting to use Linux are probably best advised to blow away Linpus and put Ubuntu on there. You'll get much better application (and perhaps driver) support.

Really? But then you lose some of the hardware support. Instead take the time to configure linpus properly. Once you do then it just acts like a normal Fedora installation. There is nothing that I have needed to do that I have been unable to do using the installed distro.

I'm not familiar with the AspireOne but afaik the only stuff you loose is the functionality of the wifi-switch, and a couple of powersave modes for the devices. I'd imagine in 8.10 hardware support will be improved.

The thing about Linpus is that the interface is terrible tbh, by the time you've read some guides on how to remove the 'appliance-like' GUI and get to normal Linux Gnome/KDE - you may as well have installed Ubuntu and started taking advantage of apt-get and the huge number of repositories
