The Acer ONE Thread

When I was looking to install something on Limpus Lite I was readying online all these lines of code I needed to type. What's that all about?

There are two ways of adding software. The terminal way (which is like using DOS again!) and via the "add/remove" programs function (which is kind of like Windows - but with more choices).

You only need to use the terminal functionality to initialy unlock the right-mouse click menu and it's Alt+F2 followed by (I think) one line of text.

Most software can be installed via the add/remove programs function; only really odd stuff is installed via code!

Has anyone tried to install Vista on this device at all?

How does it run on the 1GB/120GB HDD?

Im sure I ready a couple of pages back someone tried it and it worked fine, however I run XP. The Acer Aspire One User website has useful hints n tips about everything like this :)

Had vista running on mine for a while, was usable but pretty sluggish. Decided just to go back to using xp again, wouldn;t be without it now.

How straight forward is it to install xp ? will I loose function of anything like wireless etc

and if I want to change back to linux do I still just pop the disc in to recover to linux

Got an aspire one 8gb linux version for £160 effectively.

Just wondering what the ssd performance is like. Can someone who's installed xp please post hd tune results.

Should be good for me as I need portability and my standard 15" laptop was really getting pointless since all I do is browse the net and write some stuff up.

Seen the Linux 8GB/512MB version at a large supermarket chain for £180. Is that enough RAM to run ok, or should I get the 1G version?

Depends what your doing, If you don't mind taking it apart to upgrade the RAM then it will save you some money and you can get a 16GB SD card for >£15 to expand storage.

ALSO.......

Anybody who may be interested a certain supermarket chain MAY be offering the 120GB/1GB Linux version in white and blue for £199 next week.

I will speak to PID when I'm in work later and find out of it's still going ahead and if it is selected stores or not.

:D:p;)

120GB/1GB in blue for £199 would be real sweet!

Has anyone upgraded the RAM in thiers?

I want to add another 1Gb to mine but i really dont want to break it as it looks really tricky

Does anyone know of an acer service center in the UK that may carry out the RAM upgrade?

I ordered a 512mb 120GB AAO and a 1GB SODIMM at the same time. Memory turned up a day later than the AAO, but upgrade was very easy. Just followed the guide on youtube and made sure that I didn't round any of the screws off when removing them. I also used an anti-static strap, but thats optional if you have one. Worked perfectly first time and not had a single problem with it since upgrading it. Very happy with my AAO and am currently using it for about 3hrs a day as my main PC is currently in a container on it's way to Oz that I am due to join very shortly :D

If you're competant at following guides then I don't see a problem with doing the upgrade yourself.
