The Acer ONE Thread

Just thought i'd show you all my new modded desktop, this is the Linux 8GB SSD version.

I think it looks so much better than the original design and didn't take too much work. It has things like desktop cube enabled where if you drag a window off the side of the desktop it will spin around in a cube and show you the other side. Pointless but cool!

I think I may have to put 512mb RAM in to make it up to 1GB because it is a little bit slower than what it was but still perfectly usable :D

Was thinking of getting one of these as they are quite cheap now. ~£180.

Want to get a standard 8GB version and that is more than enough space for me. Has anyone loaded XP on the 8GB version? How well does it cope? Is there a specific way you set it up? Obviously I was going to put a 2GB stick in it. Does it support 2GB?

Does the battery make it get hot when its on your lap?

Was hoping to be able to use it for things like iplayer, tvcatchup & other internet things.

yer i am looking at one still but more coz i want one i still carnt think of a need for one i have a macbook pro and a g1 so have lots of internet but i think when you can start picking them up for under £100 will get one just for fun :D

It doesn't support a 2gb stick, 1gb max. So added to the on-board mem it gives you 1.5gb total. Be warned though, installing the extra ram involves taking the thing apart because there is no removable cover on the underside of the unit. It's not too bad a job though.

As for setting up XP, it's fairly straight forward if you install it from an external USB drive, you can also install it from a USB stick but it's a little more long-winded.

How to install XP using a USB stick:

XP is pretty damn slow on the 8gb SSD model unless you install the EWF driver from XP embedded. With EWF installed and 1.5gb ram XP runs very nicely indeed. I have 1.5gb and XP (with EWF) on my SSD model and it flies

Thanks for the info DreXel.

Does a 6 cell battery protrude from the laptop? Does it make it a lot heavier? When its on your lap, can you feel the heat of the battery?

What does the EWF driver actually do?

Thanks again.

It diverts all HDD writes to RAM. It makes XP very responsive and snappy, the only downside is you have to run a command to commit all writes to the SSD before shut down otherwise they never get written.

It's simple enough though, just open a command prompt and type: ewfmgr c: -commit

This will commit all HDD writes to the SSD at the next shut down. I have created a desktop shortcut with that command which I click before shutting down. (I generally use Hibernate instead of shut-down anyway).

Drexel I bought the wife an 8gb SSD model and have added an 8gb SD card to the expansion slot which under the Linpus install has merged with the SSD 8gb, and is seen as one big drive... Does this work the same under the XP install?

No, XP sees the SD card as another drive.

Picked up the 512mb/120gb Linux model for £150 from a supermarket this morning.

I heard that acer started using 160gb drives in them and it's true! Mine has a 160gb drive but marked 120gb on the box! :D

I am nuts, but it works !!

I am just finishing the XP install and installing the drivers I pulled from Acer's FTP.

Any idea what "Acer Launch Manager" is?

I don't want to install if it's some acer bloatware.

Thanks in advance!

On the One it just displays a message when you enable/disable wireless with the front switch and change volume with the soft keys. Handy for the volume display, at least.
