The Acer ONE Thread

I joined the AAO brotherhood this evening. Unfortunately its in the UK and I'm in Spain  Got my Dad to pop into the local supermarket and pick up the 120gig Linux version for £150. Just need to sort out a courier to get it out here. Does the wifi work with Linux Mint?

mate - which supermarket?! if you cant say on here can you email to me (see trust)

So I got a xbox wireless reciever to use my xbox 360 pad with games on the acer. Only thing is I can't seem to get it to work in game. I've loaded the drivers and synced the pad. Which is successful as its recognised in properties. However when I try it in game (and being fair I've only tried one, unreal tournament original!)nothing seems to happen. It spins round continuosly. Any ideas?

Could someone do me a favour and fire up memtest 86+ for me.

I have been memtesting my system to make sure it's all ok as I use it for business so cannot afford to have it unstable.

I note the line "Settings: RAM: 221MHz (DDR443) / CAS 4-4-4-12 / Single Channel (64 bits)"

Now, obviously the memory is meant to be at 266mhz, DDR533. Any idea why it's out?

CPU speed reads 1596mhz in the top right corner and FSB = 133mhz.

Thanks for your time guys! :D

sounds pretty bizarre!

they wouldn't be underclocking ram to keep the system cool would they? it is such a tiny machine this thought just popped into my humble head.

i will run the same test when mine arrives this week.

OS Choice

Hi all,
Had an 8gb ssd acer for a couple of months now and quite fancy changing OS. Not sure what to install though, would like windows but dont think it'll be fast enough and not sure which is the best linux distro for the acer one. Only requirement is that the os supports HFS+.
Also is it possible to install windows or linux from an external hdd? Any Suggestions??

Windows runs like a dream on the SSD model, but only as long as you install an extra 1gb of ram, and most importantly install the EWF driver.

Anyone know when the new Aspire One is to be released? I've heard they've bumped up the battery life and it now has a 10" screen. The battery life is what's really making me hold off getting one of these, and swaying me towards an NC10.

Hi guys, hope you can help. My housemate is looking at getting an Aspire One, probably the 16GB SSD version with Windows XP Home and 1GB of RAM, because they seem ridiculously cheap for what they are. It's largely just going to be a platform for him to check website compatibility on (with various browsers), as well as trying out various operating systems and such.

I'm aware that it's possible to install new operating systems from a USB flash drive with a bit of tweaking, but what we wanted to know is whether the One comes with an XP CD as standard. The first thing he'd be wanting to do is give it a clean install of XP to make it as streamlined as possible, but that's obviously made more difficult if there's no XP CD to install from in the first place.

Thanks for any info.

No tweaking required to install an OS from USB, it's only the card reader thats the problem as it is not usb based but PCI and the bios doesn't recognise it as a device to boot from.

XP will not come on a CD, it will be preinstalled. You can use a disc you already have, but just use the activation code on the bottom of the netbook.

a lot of people install Linux (ubuntu in my case ) or OSX.

I removed the extra memory I installed, ran mem test and the quoted speeds were identical so we can rule out the addition of more memory causes odd clock speeds.

Nice picked 2 up while doing my weekly shopping £150 and they had 160HDD in them which was a nice surprises as they said 120 on the box.

Just need to get used to this Linux thing as it would be nice to keep it over putting xp on it. Time to get reading this thread!!

my 512mb a150l arrived the other day and i've just loaded up cpu-z now.

DRAM freq 332.5mhz
FSB: DRAM 2.5
cas 4-4-4-12

bus 133.0mhz
rated fsb 532.1mhz
core speed 798mhz
multiplier x6.0

i've never had time to figure out how to use memtest so never used it before. hope the above is of some use to you.

When did you pick these up? Recently?

I need a replacement, mine did the black screen of death. There is a 42 page tread about it at aspireoneuser forums

Don't suppose you have a link to that thread do you? If not then just a mention of what the threads called and which particular forum its in will do, thanks. As you've probably guessed mines just done the same thing. Luckily still in period so sent it back for a refund. Now just trying to decide whether to get another acer or pay the price difference (by the time you factor in a new battery for the thing which was its main weak point)and get a samsung (parents have one and you can see where the money went on it!).

Cheers

sorry i don't have the link.

I just did a search on the aspireoneuser forums for "warranty" and came across it.

a search for "black screen" might also show it.

I only paid £165 for mine, so moving to something else is a massive price difference. The problem is, it was bought from the subsiduary of a well known book store - They will only do a refund.

I tried Acer online returns, but it doesn't recognise my serial number.

Had my AAO (120gig) for a few days now stilll getting used to the trackpad but adjusting to the keyboard took very little time. Yesterday I upgraded to 1.5gig of RAM, really easy to do (obviously would have been easier with a RAM door ;)). Really loving the portablity but one thing thats bugging me is gmail.

On my main laptop the screen is wide enough to have contacts, calendar and standard buttons on one side, gchat and labels on the other. On the One this layout means the inbox is really restricted and the formatting on emails is sometime broken. Does anyone know if its possible to have different layouts for different machines? Thinking a greasemonkey or stylish script might be the answer....

I'm having issues with the VGA port on my Acer Aspire One. I connect it to my Samusung TV and I just get a message on the TV saying it's not supported.
