The Acer ONE Thread

What page are we looking at? I cannot see anything let alone understand it.

I have updated the original link. Should see the pictures now. But it was a the Chinese hyperlinks down this guy's post that showed the pictures. Anyhow, the new link has all the images on one page, rather than the hyperlinks.

Ah thanks, it looks a cracking bit of kit!

No worries. It does look very good. The UI is so "clean". It makes sense how Acer has layed it out.

Starts with Aspire One A110L Linux, 512 RAM, 8GB SSD.

Then as the models go up, looks like the SSD can come off. A 512 stick can be added, and a SATA 2.5" HDD can go in. All the components look like they are from good manufacturers too.

It looks very good  Is XP or Vista compatible with any of the components and can they be installed? Defiantly putting a preorder on one of these.

I am assuming that Acer are doing what Asus did are doing and do just that. The only hardware difference I know of between the Linux and XP models is the the XP models use HDD's and have no SSD option.

I am sure that the system will be able to boot off an SD card and have the OS installed via USB Flash Drive or USB Optical Drive.

I have not seen this confirmed anywhere but I am sure within two weeks of release we will have a detailed tutorial if it is. Very possibly pre-release as the guy who took apart the Acer Aspire One would be more than capable of checking this out.

Hmm, this picture is interesting, I am sure you could eventually get an adapter to give you a connection to those SATA power and data connections I see there and an HDD housing to suit that area (Must be how they upgrade these to the XP models). Personally I woulden't like an HDD in here but with SATA SSD's coming down in price, I know what I would be getting for this in a few years!

FURTHER EDIT: As for the Vista driver issue. I am sure if the pics were a high enough res we could see what chipsets are being used. I am sure there was mention of Realtek or Intel HD sound, Atheros 802.11b/g, and an intel chipset for video. Models I don't know. Would involve a bit of googling.

Can someone just clear this up for me, (Ive read through the latest posts, but its late :P

We can only upgrade the ram by taking it apart ?

and the slot we can unscrew open at the bottom, is this for putting in a standard 2.5" laptop hard drive ? or a 2.5" SSD ?

Going by the pictures at this source: http://www.mobile01.com/print.php?f=232&t=682555&p=1&v=6923442

SATA 2.5" HDD, yes, with the correct caddy and power / data adapter.
RAM, very odd, but looking at this model this does not look possible to do withough dissasembling the whole system.

EDIT: Just thought I would make it clear this is what I can only deduce from these photos. I don't know it for fact. Though it would make sense.

Those image links are throwing up 403 Forbidden errors mate.

Thanks nikebee, quite a humorous read:

This is a strange point of view ... do not understand himself.
Whoa, I don't understand this guy's point of view to go from first person to third person like that.

Super really like the Taichung Hotel one!
"I love this one, the Acer Aspire One"

Technology always comes from the desire of people
Hm, very true young grasshopper. (I don't know if that is a Japanese or Chinese thing but I believe it kinda fits here).

Take a more boring! 這是無線裝置的開關啦! This is the wireless device's switch!
Not that boring surely, switch goes on, switch goes off, switch goes on switch goes off. You get the picture... Also it looks like the guy swore mid sentence.

I love the way "I believe that those using Windows should findit easy to use Linux" shounds in Chinese:
I believe that the habit of using the windows should be easy to use the Carter Phillip.

Anyhow, to a little more serious matters. Lets have a look-see at the hardware for this system in order to check out compatibility for XP and Vista:

Sound / Graphics: http://attach.mobile01.com/attach/200807/mobile01-81aad3ca9428c07c7526d108a6409e2d.jpg
802.11b/g / 10/100 Ethernet: http://attach.mobile01.com/attach/200807/mobile01-b2a08b9dd25461a2047db3cd2a90c9cb.jpg
Although no picture. It has the Intel 945GSE Express Chipset.
Still need some info on the Webcam and Card Readers' manufacturers to completely check XP / Vista compatibility.

It is likely that Intel, Realtek and Atheros will make their chipsets compatible with XP and Vista. If anyone wants to take the time out to check this out, please do.

Out of curiosity Bluetech, do you have one of these on preorder?

Or am I the only one who has taken the plunge so far?

I am waiting for them to come into a store I work for. We have been waiting to get them in for a while now.

I would like to see one "in the flesh" before making my decision. It will be going out on display so I will be able to tinker with it before I put it out and make my decision.

I will most likely, if all goes to plan with getting them in, be posting my thoughts on the system here.

That would be very much appreciated since you'll probably have them before must have us mere mortals! ;)

I'll more than likely be doing a mini review of the One when mine arrives as well, I'll get some pics up and possibly a video or two.

It would be nice to know about the potential upgradeability of these, as I fear it may be one of the systems downfalls looking at the Chinese links you have provided. So if you get the chance to take it apart and have a bit of a play with the innards that would be great.

It's just a shame that the release date is so damn far away. :(

I know. Plus we are a small retail outlet so it would be hard to beat the possible rush from the larger stores with our suppliers.

Further more I would probably have to buy one to actually take it apart as far as Chinese guy has gone. I am sure I could get a look to see what easy upgrade options are there though. Hopefully the one's we get have some sort of a RAM bay panel on the back. It just wouldent make sense not to have one.

25th of this month.... supposedly...

Lets hope that date really is a solid date and we get them very soon after, I know of another site saying its expected in stock in mid august... it could be different for different retailers

EDIT: Found the one on another site, who state stock is in on the 18th of august.
