*** The all new iPhone 4 thread - Keep all iPhone 4 stuff in here ***

how do i transfer photos or files to the iphone ? and how do i get photos from the iphone to my macbook ? im probably missing something obvious but there is no photos section in itunes ?

Not sure about the Mac, but on the PC the iPhone also appears as a connected camera device. I go in there and move the photos to wherever I'm syncing photos to/from.

On the phone they then appear under your Photo Library rather than the Camera Roll.

iphoto will handle all of your imports from the phone and back to it if you wish. Also use it to create albums/folders to transfer onto the phone of you wish.

Ring up your network and ask them to send out a micro sim??...or just cut the sim down yourself with a pair of scissors, plenty of guides on the net or buy yourself a cheap sim cutter.

Stupid question time. I just got an iPhone 4 and I currently own a 3GS.

If I do a backup of the 3GS, and then plug the iPhone 4 in and restore from that, what gets carried across?

I would like it to keep:

- Contacts
- Texts
- Email settings
- Browser favourites
- Apps
- Photos and videos

Is this possible?

From what I remember you'll need to sync your contacts with something like Address Book or Outlook, then transfer them over to your new phone. Can all be done via iTunes

No you dont - its all backed up within iTunes. I did nothing other than backup my 3GS and then restore that same backup on my 4 and everything including my texts were there. Only thing I had to do was readd my email/wifi passwords to the settings that had carried over...

ps3ud0

yep used it me self to extract stuff, as apple advised me on not doing a restore when my iphone 4 was replaced

Didnt want to start a new thread so...
My contract on 3GS is up for renewable next month, with O2, and I want to go the sim only route for the iPhone 4 but what is the best deal and network? O2 3G network sucks so don't mind shifting networks. Also, are apple still giving away free cases?
Thanks in advance.

I'm on O2 simplicity 20 which I like because it still has the unlimited web bolt on.

I've heard that the Tesco tariff is pretty good.

As for the case, I believe they don't do it anymore but if you complain to Apple and show them that you are losing signal/dropping calls because of the antenna band then they will give you a free bumper. (Read this somewhere so don't quote me ;) )

Could someone tell me if the 'Cellular Network Data' section under Settings > Usage includes data over Wi-Fi?

I've used my iPhone 4 for 2 days and apparently have transmitted/received around 2gb!!! I only have a 1Gb plan so I am ****ed if this doesn't include Wi-Fi

I thought this had a fair usage policy of 500Mb a month though?

Nope, that should not include Wifi on say for instance, your home network. All that usage tells you is the amount of data you have sent and received over your phone providers network. iOS 4 allows you to turn off Cellular data if required under "Network" settings. You can make and receive calls/texts but not MMS nor go online/browse the web with this turned off.

As long as you are seeing the "Wifi" symbol at the top bar on the phone when you are on your wireless network and not "3G" then you are connecting via your own network and not using up data on any plan you are on.

I'm not aware of any apps off hand that measure wifi data sent and received on an iPhone but I can't say if there are any available for sure.

Very odd. I just logged into 3 and checked and I have pretty much all of my allowance left for the month, which is completely right; so I have no idea why/how my phone has transmitted so much!

EDIT: Lifetime call time also says 5 hours, and I've barely used it for more than 3 minutes of calls. I hope I haven't been sold a phone which had been previously returned! It was all sealed when I bought it.

EDIT: I AM AN IDIOT!!! I think I have just worked it out. I think it's carried the usage stats across from my 3GS which I backed up and then did a restore to the iPhone 4. Does that make sense?
