********** The all new "Official" iPhone 4S thread - Keep all the iPhone 4S stuff in here **********

In the System Services menu, make sure only Compass Calibration, Mobile Network Search, and Traffic are switched on. This way, nothing unnecessary will be trying to find your location. If you use Siri, turn off Siri in Location Services. Turn off "Ask to Join Networks" in the Wi-Fi menu too.

It's been said before, but just in case.

As for other battery life issues, has anyone with the issues tried doing a full, fresh install of iOS 5.0.1? Just suggesting it as I've been getting great battery life (on 56% now) on my phone, using Maps for ten minutes, 20 minutes of browsing on 3G, about 25 texts, an hour of phone calls, with Wi-Fi on but not connected (see above), and with IMAP syncing my mail every 15 minutes, Exchange for contacts, social networks, eBay, the whole lot syncing. The phone came off the charger at 8am this morning.

I know it's different for everybody, but it at least gives a rough idea of what you should be expecting. Unfortunately don't have numbers as I restarted my phone (network issue).

Is that honestly the difference in battery usage?

Aye, it's shocking how little I actually use my phone :)

Notice the massive difference in usage...
But isn't the insanely high usage figure actually a bug, and what is causing the battery issues? I got one of these yesterday, and it used 60% battery in the 6 hours I was sleeping last night. And the "usage" was at like 5 hours. it was completely on standby, so it obviously wasn't being used like it said it was.

Exactly. The phantom usage is seemingly down to a bug in the baseband that keeps it from closing network connections properly. The new baseband in 5.1 beta 3 seems to have fixed this bug.

Mine has been better today.. 52% and 3hours 47 usage and 5h 12 standby.

Not sure I've listened to that much music today and used it to have that much usage though...

Not sure if I should cancel my genius appointment? After its poor show yesterday and the day before I think I should keep the appointment

From my experience with the latest 5.1 beta, I'd say hold on until 5.1 is released. If you can put up with it in the mean time, it should be worth the wait.

However, if you can't put up with it in the mean time, there's a good chance a replacement handset will work just fine :)

Doug do you think the Beta of 5.1 seems ready to be released? Because this battery at the moment is killing me. It's not even lasting me a full shift at work, which is pretty terrible as my 3GS and Desire HD lasted easily through work. At work I send quite a few texts, and do literally nothing else on the phone. :(

Its getting there, they have a couple of bugs introduced from the latest beta and I have an open bug report with them for possible baseband instability but otherwise its looking good

Replied, thanks.

All sorted for you mate :)

Bloody hell, not lasting as long as a DHD now that is bad :p

Thanks for that. I just really hope it's released soon. At the moment when I go to work I basically can't use the phone for anything it was made for. It sucks so bad. :( I know it doesn't help that it's always struggling for a signal at work, but it should still be way better than it is!

The DHD absolutely destroyed this so far in terms of battery life. Could get about 12 hours out of the DHD, this struggles to 8.

Also guys - Are any of you on T-Mobile? I can't tell if my phone is actually roaming between T-Mo and Orange, as it always says T-Mobile (when it's got a signal).

The 4S should last a whole day of intensive use, the Desire HD can't even manage a few hours of intensive use, nevermind a full day.

Coming from someone who has/had both, this is currently not the case. The DHD destroys my 4S at the moment. :(

I played Zombieville earlier straight from my phone being charged to full, and it lasted a whopping 44 minutes before dying! haha!

Something is seriously wrong with your 4S then. Maybe the battery is simply dodgy?

I think it's the issue that 5.1 is trying to fix. It's been off charge now for 21 minutes, and it says the usage is at 20 minutes. This is the first time I've turned on the screen in this time.

Factory reset it, disable everything you possibly can in Settings > General > Restrictions.

Then see if it improves at all, your phone is awake all of the time for some reason and that will obliterate your battery life - as it is doing.

Just factory resetting it now. Thing is though, if I disable everything - What's the point in having the phone? Bit daft to have a phone that does everything, if it's unusable like that, wouldn't it? :(

Process of elimination to see what causes it, then you can find it easier to identify a specific fix, or leave it turned off if it's something you don't use.

I agree, something is actually wrong with your phone. Shouldn't be dropping that quick and with usage times that high its doing something continuously

Time for process of elimination

Well so far it's going well :) got all the location services on that I had before, got the Facebook and nba app installed so far. 10 hours standby nearly, with slightly over an hour usage. 72% battery left. The usage so far is a little higher than I'd like still, since I've done almost nothing on the phone, but so far this is hugely improved. :) I will install apps 1 at a time, and see if any of those were guilty of the usage issues.

Just a question about restoring your iPhone as it's one of the things people suggest for battery issues. I haven't had an iPhone that long and haven't needed to restore.

If I do a clean restore without using a backup, I am right by saying there is no way to get my texts back? Contacts are synced onto iTunes or?
