********** The all new "Official" iPhone 4S thread - Keep all the iPhone 4S stuff in here **********

Well so far it's going well :) got all the location services on that I had before, got the Facebook and nba app installed so far. 10 hours standby nearly, with slightly over an hour usage. 72% battery left. The usage so far is a little higher than I'd like still, since I've done almost nothing on the phone, but so far this is hugely improved. :) I will install apps 1 at a time, and see if any of those were guilty of the usage issues.

If you've barely used it, it shouldn't be under 90% after 10 hours ideally.

Have you set anything up to sync? It can factor that in towards usage statistics and that obviously does drain the battery a little bit.

don't want to order online though, i want to go in and get it..do they have stock updates on the site though...i'm going to have a look

I'd really just give them a call then go in. When I went into my local store (The Mall, Cribbs Causeway), they had loads in stock. Of course, in London the matter will be very different, but you should be able to get away with a phone call to check beforehand.

Sorry, I only just noticed this post! :( that was with a factory reset then everything off in restrictions. So absolutely nothing going on in the background.

On the 5.1 beta 3, had it for 2 days now. Not seeing the difference really. 11hours of standby, 5 of usage and 17%. I really don't want to go through a massive phase of uninstalling applications and try identify a problem... thats if I even find one. Probably just rebook my genius appointment.

There are three problems in iOS 5.* as far as I can see affecting battery life. All three would be relatively easy to fix by apple if they were willing to listen. The fact they've gone all the way to 5.1 and not fixed it means they are unwilling to do anything about it, which is both disheartening and plain stupid.

1. Problem one. Snitch connection to push.apple.com is too aggressive and prone to hang ups with socket open. The push.apple.com connection in netstat transmits most of the i-services - anything from find my phone to diagnostics. The problem is - it's very aggressive and often trips and stalls, especially if you are moving between data masts while it's transmitting. This results in the phone aggressively polling all possible backup connections and even mast jumping - as a result the phone doesn't properly sleep, often gets warm from background services trying desperately to request data connection through another mast and phantom "usage" stats grow when phone should be sleeping. Apple should stop it - there is no data that your phone should desperately need to transmit. Just let it queue.

2. And this is really, really dumb. When you enable wifi, push.apple.com connection always stays on 3G. That's right. When you enable wifi, the mobile data radio doesn't switch off. Not unless you manually switch it off. So basically - switching to wifi to save your battery, might result in bigger battery drain, because now you use two radios instead of one. It also means kb of data leaks from snitch connection when you're abroad. You switched to wifi in hotel, but your phone kept ping ponging with mothership on 3G behind your back. Just dumb

3. Inability to switch over to 2G on 4S devices. 2G would be perfectly good for "during the day" snitch connections. If only we had a choice in menu.

I currently can make my 4S last up to 3 days with regular usage and browsing, by simply rebooting when push.apple.com connection get stoned and create phantom usage. I recon in 2G mode, with wifi auto disabling 3G radio, standby battery life on 4S would go over 5 days. But there is no blog on earth that can make Apple give us things they don't want to give us.

1 has been fixed for me (but not for Oli, it seems) in 5.1. The connection is properly going to idle now.

2 is really daft :) and not fixed in 5.1.

3 is fixed in 5.1. They've added the toggle back in under Network.

No, probably half... Like 2 could be music, that shouldn't use much battery anyway.

Aye, 2 hours of music shouldn't use much of the battery.

If you did an upgrade, it might be worth trying a restore.

Surely if you restore from a backup you will just be copying over the same issues you had previously...?

My battery on my 4S was bad, then i did a fresh restore and set it up as a new phone and it was much better.

Not if your problems are down to the bug in the baseband that the software update fixes :)

Remember, all you're moving back is content and settings, all the apps (the built-in ones) and firmware are completely separate.

If your problems are related to something else, that's another matter ;)

Things like messages though surely couldn't cause problems? I just hate deleting messages really, same with emails. Game saves as well, what a nightmare... hours and hours on wheres my water and all data will be lost; when new levels come out I will have needed to have done all previous levels as well.
