The Countdown Has Begun...... Fallout 3

They'll easily make plenty of profits from the console versions. The VATS thing just seems to be a poorly intergrated tacked on system that is only there to be used as an easy mode for certain unbalanced encounters and so they can claim to retain some sort of quasi turn based gameplay from the original games to try to cater to the widest spectrum of gamers

And that's just a bit dissapointing, I'm not saying it's a gamebbreaker or anything, just that it's a negative for me, I'd rather see just a simpler pause feature like Mass Effect but with the extra reliance on your characters skills to see if you make the shot and hit whatever body part you're aiming at.

VATS seems to ignore what skills you have judging from this preview and the numerous gameplay vids that are on youtube. Which sort of makes the whole rpg aspect of character advancement appear weaker and less meaningful.

You make a good point. VATS will most likely become the MARMITE of Fallout 3 :p At least it's something you can use when you choose to... unless there are some parts of the game where you cannot progress any further without using it.

Hmmm ... some troubling initial reports. There's one from the Swedish PC Gamer that gives it 80%, basically marking it down for what looks like to me being over simplified for the console market, with little true RPG elements. It looks like it's yet another tragedy for the PC gaming world. I hope they're being over critical, but my hopes of this being a classic are slowing disappearing ... I'm starting to really dislike multi-format development.

Reading my comments back I'm my usual negative self, I'll undoubtedly still buy the game though or at least ask Santa for it.

Certain features of games just seem to annoy me sometimes because I do actually want to love the game :)

I shall be collecting the 360 CE with bonus music CD and keyring from shop X, removing the game and take it to shop Y to trade the game in for the Ltd Ed on PC thus gettin all the goodies available :)

Very nice idea, how much do you anticipate that will cost?

I reckon all in all, every available goody will end up costing me £45 and leave me with a copy of the PC version to boot. Bear in mind I have a £10 voucher to use in shop Y otherwise it woulda been £55 total. I am also assuming I will get £30 trade in for Fallout 3 360 - if I don't I will keep it and sell it new and sealed on the MM or fleabay.

they gave it 90%

Follow the games main quest and it will all be over in under 10 hours and you will be very disappointed.

So where does that leave us with a game that many will dislike? and some even hate, for its grey even depressing world. A game that when played through quickly will repel.

DO NOT rush this game, the rewards in Fallout 3 are from playing the game as *** developers intended, complete every side quest, explore every area of the map, do not reload from your last save point when your running low on health.

Fallout 3 rewards the player who plays as if he were stranded in ths glorious post apocalyptic wasteland, the player who scrounges every corner of every room for that vital stimpack, who knows that a puddle of water could be the difference between that final chunk of health and a short boost. At times like this when you play the game as if your life depended on it the devestated land comes to life, full of possibilities behind the dusty grey appearance, when your only goal is survival Fallout 3 becomes sublime.

I hate it when reviewers make up excuses for games and developers. They should just review the game on how it actually plays, not rubbish like "how the developers intended" or "if you do this, that and then this, then it will be better".

How the dev's intended? eh? They are the ones who programmed the game surely it's how they intended now?

they also made a perfectly valid point in that the people who remember the priginal fallouts so fondly will unfairly critiscise fallout 3 as they will always have the rose tinted spectacles of the original games impact when they first came out.

They say Fallout 3 is unquestionably a better game than the previous titles, yet the memory of the older games does them far more credit than they deserve. Go back and play them and most will realise the games by todays standards are not that great, same with most retro classics.

^^ thats a quote by the way ha ha

The main quest length doesnt annoy me at all, anyone who just plays through the main quest and puts the game away and gets annoyed is missing the point of these games.

First playthough of oblivion i completed the main quest in about 12 hours and uninstalled.

Second playthrough i never touched the main quest put 200+hours into exploring the wilderness, doing every sub quest and then finished the main quest again.

Third playthrough i installed loads of mods including OOO, put in another 200+ hours playing a completely different game, never used fast travel once, explored every blade of grass and absolutely loved ever minute of it :)

Fallout 3 may have a short main story but im sure ill still have 100 hours or more of exploring before i even realise theres a main quest :)

This is going to be awesome, it won't appeal to everyone but I think it will be tremendous!

You can blow up entire towns with a nuclear blast...
