The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - MODS & TWEAKS

I'd beware of that SKSE script thing. It doesnt seem to work that well, cause's the npcs to freeze, like at the beginning of the game. After Rothgar cuts your bonds and you encouter the Imperial Captain they stop moving. Could cause other similar unknown problems. So I'm not using it at the moment.
No problems like that encountered here so far and where it does work, it works well. For people who were often just on the edge of a 60fps minimum through most of the game, this final push is very evident. There has been an update to the Plugin on Skyrim Nexus that addresses some minor issues that have been reported.

My shadows are popping/fading in when I am running along and I can't remember it doing this before I am also getting a little scenery pop up, its really annoying.

Only done the config tweets(all of them) except vsync.
Because that problem is caused by the ini tweaks. More distinctly it is caused by having a low fShadowDistance.
I'd not use the shadow ini tweaks to be honest. The gains is some areas are negated by the side effects they cause.
Shadows in this game will either be very limited to a small radius around you but be very detailed or be very blocky but seen for miles. You will have to strike the balance for yourself.

+1. mine is at 2500 which is really low. they look awesome, but they render fairly close. 8000 (I think the default is) they look rubbish. I think I'll try 4000 when I get in.

Same problem here, must be one of the ini settings that changed it.

You can always reset them by deleting skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini and letting the game rebuild them.

Right, sorry to say I'm not reading through ALL these posts. I'm downloading the game via Steam (Thanks bro! Ace present!) so is there any mods or texture packs that are recommended before I start?

Vanilla Skyrim is still a very pretty game, Like someone esle mentioned I wouldn't go down the path of installing big graphics mods before actually seeing and playing the game as is. The only mod I'd recommend for first time playing is No blocky faces and thats it. Then if anything bothers you much like some textures in the environment maybe check out a replacement. The 3 big ones I can think of is Skyrim HD, the clothing one, and the water overwork mod, but theres loads of other texture replacements that replace specific things. Skyrim nexus is a really good site, search for the most endorsed files in the texture categories.

So is there any "must have" list anywhere?

I quite like the look of some of the replacement menu systems and also the Immersive Water v3.

There are a few horrid textures in places which are a bit shocking but apart from that, the game is gorgeous! :D

A must have list?

There's no such thing.

There are excellent texture replacements from many parties and one set may appeal to you more than the other.

There are gameplay changing mods that may be considered a must by some and a no-go by those who don't like altering the vanilla game.

Read through the last few pages, I've given some suggestions, namely recommending the STEP guide and giving Neil some advice on how to improve the guide in the OP (which he didn't take through the lack of time).

Do your research, Skyrim Nexus and Google are excellent resource for Skyrim mods.

Got Skyrim for Christmas, and so far I have no desire to mod it at all. With Oblivion I was modding everything in sight to get it the way I wanted. Skyrim though.....the occasional stupid texture or inventory niggle aside, it's amazing. Think I'm just going to forget about mods and enjoy the game!

 You are missing out! You think it looks good now...? Well it can look much better!
