The first "proper" Kepler news Fri 17th Feb?

I hope there is a price war soon, I wonder how low each company would go.

It could indicate how much the cards actually cost to manufacture. ;)

This is something I am very interested in knowing aswell :p

It'd be hard to work out the manufacturing cost from the selling price.

There's:

Board partner profit margin
Shipping Cost
Exchange rate conversion
Distributor profit margin
Shipping from distributor
Etailor/Reseller profit margin
VAT

Is Andy vs Andy still going on??

Apparantly so.

Yeah I knew it wasn't going to indicate the real cost of manufacture but we can still dream. :p

From the reactoon in this thread it sounds like nvidia have shot themselves in the foot if this really was supposed to.be the mid range part. Maybe they have been bitten by problems with large dies and decided to stick with small dies? Maybe this is.the flagship part until the refresh?

Anyway i.dont really see the problem with the pricing, it slightly outperforms the 7970 and costs slightly more by the looks of things. I wont be buying either but if you want the top end you pay the premium.

It was pretty much known a while ago that there was not going to be a gk102 part. I said then that i think nvidia would release a 6 series with the gk104 likely being the gtx680. Most people said no the gk104 will be the 660ti or whatever. The gk112 daddy card for me was always going to be called the gtx780 or whatever the top end 7 series will be called as its named like a refresh part. Gf102 was gtx480 and gf112 was gtx580 so it stands to reason that gk102 would have been the daddy gtx680 but was cancelled so gk112 for me was always gonna be the gtx780.

All nvidia have done is not make the same mistake as they did with fermi in not trying to rush out a part that is not ready.

A ti560 thats heavily overclocked can get to gtx580 performance. All nvidia have done is get a card to the market that can compete with amd. I might be wrong but a good clocking 7870 probably can get close or match 7970 performance on a 212mm2 die so nvidia doing it with a much bigger chip is no surprise at all.

I would call releasing something that needs fixing rushed lol.

They were already several months late. They could not afford to put it off any longer. They released the broken crap, which gave them breathing space to work on it. Plus some money came rolling in, because there were at least some silly enough to pay £450 for it.

Think it has little to do with manufacturing cost, priced more on what the market will wear just like any other product. In the short to mid term this is loaded because they'll always be a volume that can be sold at that level. It's a merry go round really to keep their margins healthy just like any business, you innovate to bring new high margin products to market or get pushed out by a competitor.

Apparantly so.

the cost of manufacture will be about half what you pay, the more they make the more the unit price falls, maybe this is why they cost so much, i.e only a few of us use top end cards, there is a glut of cards around.... flipping loads for sale online

mind you, there isn't exactly many pc gamers around and now you know why.... the rig costs far too much, thanks to cards like this.

I do see where you're coming from, with the being late thing. :p

But they're hardly broken ****, infact mine are working just fine and still run every game I could throw at them with reasonable framerate.

Even after all the abuse they've had these passed few years. ;)

Most people can't justify buying at these prices, but plenty people still do.

The most I've spent on a GPU was just over £200 for one of my gtx470's, and that was along time ago.

if you're a pc gamer you've no choice, but with this top end card you dont need another for quite a few years..... i've had my old card for 5 years, and it's only been too slow for the last year !

you know you've had enough when Serious Sam is only 35 FPS........ HA HA HA

Sorry, you're wrong there.

nope, all my Xbox friends think i'm crazy spending this money, the price of the rig scares them all to hell, i speak to them all the time about this.

i counter what they say by saying this, ``this is only my second build in 6 years, plus my screen image looks miles better than yours, even on low quality``..... this shuts them up pretty quickly..... lol !

pc gaming is in a huge minority, this is because it's so expensive.... plus other reasons too.... all the PC gaming shops have closed where i live, the only ones left are the ones that combine gaming with non- gaming IT and computer repairs
