The first "proper" Kepler news Fri 17th Feb?

I don't know about DM, but an OC'd 7970 smokes an OC'd 580 by 49% in Skyrim, 72% in Deus Ex(but it's an AMD title), 48% in BF3(but it would be less with 4XAA instead of 2XAA)@2560

The Skyrim result imo is quite impressive, considering Nvidia has very good performance in this title.

Not impressed with[H] for not doing 4XAA in BF3 though.

Regarding an OC' 7970 v a stock 6970 in BAA:

'The stock GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970 had an average 19.6 FPS more than the AMD Radeon HD 6970, while the overclocked version was 117% faster with 28.7 higher average framerates.'

That is a stunning improvement over a previous gens performance imo.

Yep, the overclocking on these 79XX is sweet! Got my 7970 running at 1200Mhz core and broke the 10,000 score mark on 3D Mark 11. Pretty good for a single card.

Metro 2033 = bum gravy.

A more poorly coded pile of slopbuckets it's hard to find.
I wouldn't say poorly coded, as without the DX11 features it was very well-optimised. The problem was that the DX11 features they implemented were way beyond any card on the market - that doesn't mean they're necessary poorly coded, just that they were very demanding. Regardless, it was still a great game - especially for such a small developer - and I'm most looking forward to the sequel.

The biggest problem at the moment is that a 7970 is largely overkill for 1080p, yet not beefy enough to handle 1600p / 1440p. I'd need to drop £700 for 2x7950s and £500 for a 27" IPS display and even then many games will struggle, either because they are too demanding or poorly ported from consoles.

so it will struggle in certain games I guess, this is why I was hoping to see Nvidias next card it would surely be a beast and hopefully capable on a 27" IPS panel

Even if they just did a price drop on the 580/570, that would suit me. If theres no news in two weeks then i'm just going for a 7950.

The fact they haven't dropped their prices is incredibly arrogant IMO.

However, it may be for a reason.

If they have stopped production of Fermi cards (and I think I heard they have, all apart from the one that was supposed to be coming out to take on the 7770 but didn't) then they won't want stocks all selling out.

When they ended 200 series production (too early) there were no Nvidia cards to be had for months.

Arrogant? Are you serious?

Arrogance is assuming they need to drop their pricing. Seeing as people like us are a minority market and plenty of people will still buy current gen NOW and will continue to when Kepler is out nVidia do not NEED to drop prices.

People may WANT them to but why should they?

Lol, AMD are a massive international business, who sell to more than just the enthusiast sector. The fact you find their pricing "arrogant" shows that you don't know how the industry works, and simply base their incorrect pricing on your own preference :p Made my day that has :D

NVidia prices remain higher because 7900 prices are even higher. If AMD launched faster cards at lower or equal pricing (as is usually the case for next-gen tech), NVidia would have been forced to make cuts. As it stands, a 7950 is about as fast as a GTX580 and costs about the same. A 7970 is about 20% faster than a GTX580 and costs about 20% more. I know that the 28nm cards overclock much better than 40nm, but the vast majority of buyers do not overclock anyway. Technically savvy people will buy the 7900's, even withstanding the lauinch rip-off pricing compared to previous generations.

In short, blame AMD's next gen pricing structure for high last gen NVidia prices.

Err....think he was talking about Nvidia :D

Another broad statement  Everyone I know who owns a 7970 has overclocked it. Nearly all will overclock by a minimum of 100mhz, almost all will overclock by 200mhz, beating out a 580 by upto 50%.

The ref 7970 is very much an underclocked card at stock, yet still is light years ahead in terms of tessellation and power consumption, and when overclocked is simply in another league.

When Nvidia finally release their 28nm product, expect to see non reference 7970's running crazy clocks go on sale to counter Nvidia, with the possibility of a 2308 core 7980.

Yes lol, but the same applies to his logic on Nvidia's pricing.

I agree with ALXAndy.

Nvidia should have lowered prices for GTX 580. 7950 is newer, cheaper, more vRam and slightly faster/better at OC. Apart from people who already have a 580 and wanting another for SLI, I doubt any enthusiast will buy it at all.
