The " Hiper-Active " Club

In the last few weeks (since overclocking my C2D), my PC has started to make a strange buzzing noise when it is first powered on. It lasts a couple of seconds and sounds like a very fast clicking noise.
It appears to be coming from the PSU and does not seem to effect the running at all.

Whats the prognosis, should I keep a bucket of sand nearby in case my beloved Hiper goes volcanic.

This is a really crazy thread but funny, let me give you my 2p, I think it is down to the QA on these psus, surfice to say I think they suffered a bad bad those made around November 2005-Jan-2006. I would be interested to see any patterns.

Please add me to the list.

I had 3 of these when I build 3 machine for myself, brother and dad. They were 13 months old

Number 1 - selient death

Number 2 - The fans went crazy and the power supply made a arcing/buzzing sound.

Number 3 - exploded last night

Date of manufactuer were November 2005 on all 3.

Have one in my media rig, and 8 months previously same one in my main rig. Never ever had a problem with it, and have sold one to a friend; 4 months and still running tip-top.

Only PSU i've had die was my Aunties' and it was a generic unbranded 600w one for £20 out of my local computer shop.

Had mine for 15 months now and still going strong, F@H and on all night and day, i do abuse this PSU yet it still seems to love me

*edit* its a type R modular 580w

18 months of type R 580w love! funnily enough it can handle a 8800gtx, but has issues when clocking a pentium d 805 to 4.3ghz :D still works a treat, and someone has just literally agreed to buy it from me.. also may i just add... one of the nicest looking psu's i have ever seen ;)

Unlucky! Did it take out the rest of your PC?

I whacked in a PSU from another PC to test and the motehrboard + fans span up. I don't know about the other components as they're all over my desk due to me trying to find the fault. I guess I'll find out when I get my replacement Corsair.

Add me in. 580, blue. I've had it about 14 months and been in several builds, not had any problems out of it so far.

It does look like they had a bad batch. Strangely enough, part of my job entails going round to electronics manufacturers and advising wether to "make or buy" ie build in-house or out-source (the far east mostly). One of the pitfalls of buying in is that quite a few contract manufacturers (subies) make a large portion of their margin on the supply chain. Contrary to popular conceptions they don't make a profit on the differential of the labour costs since these are all pretty much equal in their market, rather they leverage their purchasing. This sounds snazy, but in effect it means they get the original Bill of Materials for a build, the recommended sources and then (on the sly) attempt to source the same or "equivalents" for a lot less. Since the supply chain is a lot less developed andmore unstable than in the rest of the world this is where a lot of sub-standard componentry makes its way into products, hence quality problems. They basically go for the cheapest option available over guaranteed continuity and stability of supply.

By handing over to a CM you can lose control of the whole process including quality.

By the way, the above shouldn't be taken as a generalisation, nor am I implying this is what happened to Hiper. It just can happen
