*** The iPhone 3G S Thread - All iPhone 3G S Related Stuff In Here ***

I believe the Visual Voicemail feature is tied to the iPhone tariff(s), so it would work on a PAYG handset, but not if you left / changed tariff.

Looks like we've found a sensible option then.

Seems a shame though that our state-side cousins can got to the Apple website and be told exactly how much it will cost them to upgrade from their 3G to 3G.

Hmmm....questions about simplicity:

Can I port my number to it?

Does the web bolton provide free web - what's this 98p business?

Yeah, the bolt-on provides free web.

The 98p charge is small print for those without that particular bolt-on i.e. just outlining costs, in the same way it details the call pricing for those without a unlimited calls bolt on. Call 02 if you need specific information.

That envirophone website is offering £200.10 for an iPhone 3G 16GB, so even if you kept the PAYG model for a year you would never really be paying the full RRP.. almost like you're using the trade-in value to work around the contract situation. Obviously, ebay would get you better results but for a fixed sum to work with, it's an option.

I'm bored of A-Level physics revision for tomorrows exams so am trying to work out what's the best way for me, having got an iPhone 3G at launch...

First of all:  @ O2 not being like AT&T and having a proper upgrade scheme.

As I see it:

  • Buy 32GB 3G for £538.30 on Pay-as-you-go.
[*]Put iPhone 3G Contract £35 SIM into it.
[*]Sell 11month old iPhone 3G 16GB with unlimited data Pay-as-you-go SIM on eBay for £300 or Envirofone for £200.
[*]Use iPhone 3G 32GB with iPhone 3G contract SIM until contract over.
[*]In January '10 the iPhone 3G 18month contract will be over so switch to £20 Simplicity.
[*]From January '10 be having a rolling contract with double the texts for £15 less a month.

That sound like the best way of doing it?

sounds like a plan. i might need to consider a old 16gb verson myself if they are going for close to 200 :D
also doing a level physics tomoro, unifying concepts :) good luck with it

iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be used only with the Pay & Go service from O2. iPhone Pay & Go includes 12 months unlimited 3G data and Wi-Fi access2.

Damn that's almost tempting - just going PAYG!

Just said the same thing on twitter! Why everyone thinks they have to buy the new phone and contact.

Buy 3GS iPhone.
Sell 3G iPhone.
Keep current contract.

Simples!

I believe it was the fact that the PAYG 32GB model cost £500+ that people paniced ;)

I'd do it that way if I had £300 to spare (£200 if you ebay the phone in good nick)

£200?!
Check auction prices they are going for over £300 if you have unlocked it :) Very simple process and I've seen 8GB 3G phones in perfect condition go for over £350 because people don't like to unlock themselves!

£100 for a 16GB 3GS is a bargain in my eyes, and no contract, still on Simplicity in my case and I'd be going from 8GB to 16GB!

I meant ...

£500 iPhone 3GS 32GB
-
£300 from sale of iPhone 3G
=
£200 remaining to pay (or £300 remaining to pay if you went with envirophone).

I practically invented iPhone unlocking on ebay.. I'd sell it unlocked, don't you worry about that ;)

Ah understand more now :p confusing me!

Yeah I made a small fortune when I was at uni on unlocked iPhones :) Silly billys!

£200 to go from 8GB to 32GB though? That alone is worth atleast £100 so £100 for the newer model/better hardware? No one can honestly grumble at that price!

32GB is OTT for me and the price is, but like I said £100 to double storage capacity and faster phone, definitely worth it in my eyes!

Ok my situation is that I took out an 18 month contract in December 2008 with O2 (through mobiles.co.uk) with an HTC Touch HD.

I want to ditch the HD now and could probably sell it for a couple of hundred pounds. However, will my standard O2 contract sim with unlimited data work in an iPhone if I buy one on PAYG?

Yes :-)

Sell current phone.
Buy iPhone 3GS.
Insert O2 sim into 3GS!

You won't get access to tethering(which you have to pay for anyway) and visual voicemail(gimmick in my eyes).

Don't know what either of those are so it's all good. Awesome.

I will soon be joining the masses of owning an iPhone, but I can't help it as I love it, despite not being a massive fan of Apple, they have won me over :)

Thanks for the advice

This is a good solution compared to my £700 option. However, as EVH points out, it still requires a spare £200/250 which I currently don't have...

I'd rather spend that money on TomTom + cradle and stick with my current 16GB phone.

Panzer

Looks like i'm going down the route of buying the iphone 3gs 32gb on payas you go and putting my iphone 3g sim in. Only got my contract 5 months ago. Can't believe this came out so soon!

If any of you have read Trusted Reviews on this, I think I would definitely agree, o2 is trying to screw everyone.
I've got a 16GB iPhone 3G, it's got a crack on the side (for no reason, might i add), it's low on memory, and it doesn't have all the new features of the new phone.

I want to upgrade, but no, they're ripping me off because the flagship model now costs a lot more than the flagship model last year, and i have to pay 6 months for the remainder of my contract?! Blasphemy!

Not sure what to do... I have a 32GB 2nd Gen iPod touch, plus the 16GB iphone 3G.... I was always going to upgrade the phone because I thought a 32GB iPhone was a nobrainer but now the prices are out im not too sure. I guess I'd get £200 for the touch and £300 for the iPhone so I just need to raise another £40 but I'd lose 16GB (which I could just about cope with). Just feels a little like a downgrade for lots of cash....

Opinions please? So undecided.

Tell you what, running 3.0 really makes me less bothered about the new phone situation

This novelty will last a while, totally feels like a new phone and is so much snappier

Cheers, you too. :)

Yey, lets just hope the used 3G 16GB prices hold out until we can get the new 3G's then!
