Admittedly it's a step down in terms of features, but I think the 5800 Nokia is a serious contender in terms of bang/buck.

The N97 I also found to be very good, and will also be cheaper.

And as Justin added, the HTC Magic is a good phone, as well as the Touch HD.

Can't believe I am also considering an iPhone alternative. o2 have just priced me out and I need a new phone.

Pricing question as Im confused...

How do I get a PAYG iPhone 3GS onto Simplicity - do I lose out of anything? I think the PAYG iPhone 3GS gets free Web+Wifi Bolt-on for 12months - do I lose that when I move to Simplicity?

Is Simplicity far better than the default PAYG option with the iPhone 3GS? Was considering the 12month £19.58 Simplicity plan with 800m/1600t - unsure about the Bolt-ons as above.

EDIT: OK Ive found out the Web+Walk one is £10 a month after and only available for iPhone - only problem is that the standard bolt-ons you get free with more expensive Simplicity plans are the £7.50 type - would O2 allow me to have the £10 type and pay the difference (£2.50 a month)? I presume the Simplicity Bolt-ons are free for the time your are on the tariff and not the first 12months as the normal PAYG

I think the good old luxury car analogy is applicable to the price/experience balance of the iPhone vs. competing smartphones.

(That's not to say the prices aren't eye-popping!)

Don't get me wrong, it's a fabulous little device.

I just hate how Apple literally milk every last drop they can from their fans, it's utterly ridiculous. You don't see Nokia doing this, and they make some very good phones. :)

If you can afford it, then good for you, I envy you and enjoy your new toy. But it doesn't change the fact that it's really expensive to own one. :)

Yes, but I guess it depends on how much calls/texts you make.

The ?20 Simplicity option (assuming you choose the free data bolt on and don't use more than the 600min/1200txts) will cost ?240 over 12 months.
Estimate your call/text PAYG charges (in that period of free data usage) and choose the cheapest. :)

So, whats the deal with the 3GS guys? I can only see a few minor upgrades from the 3G? A 3mp camera for the year 2010?... come on apple... but wait.. whats this.. a compass! Whoop.. thats me sorted :p

I guess the real upgrade is the new processor? Any news on that?

I spend about £90 out of my current Flext35 allowance (£180 IIRC) and Id say thats 3/4voice 1/4texts...

Not sure how that works out into minutes/texts as never had to worry about that...

I think O2 have killed any chance of the 3Gs being a big thing, purely because of their pricing I mean £70 a month for 24 month for a free phone is shocking £1680 for a 32gb iphone WTF!!!!

im keeping my PAYG 16gb 3g iPhone and if I get bored I might get a blackberry

Right, having looked into this.

If you desperately want the new 3G-S and are currently tied into an 18 month contract with 6 months remaining, this is what i'd do.

If you can afford it, purchase a 16gb pay as you go 16gb 3G-S for £440. Then come January slip in a Simplicity sim. Then, that way you are no longer tied into a contract when new phone's are released.

This is of course, unless o2 are incredibly sneaky and don't include any unlimited data on their simplicity tariff (wouldn't put it past them)

Personally, I don't want to give o2 another penny of my money, hopefully we'll see more carriers and more competitive prices by the time the next iPhone surfaces.

I don't see why O2 are always the ones blamed when Apple are the ones who want operator exclusivity in every country and therefore a stranglehold on prices / network charges. It's the same wherever you go in the world, if not worse, on operators like T-Mobile Germany, AT&T etc. where only 24 month contracts were allowed.

I'm tempted by a 3GS but the price is eye-watering! Good news is I'm not tied into a contract though, so it would work out slightly better by getting the PAYG 16GB. But £440 is damn hard to swallow considering only internal improvements.

I'd give up the compass for a slightly bigger screen & res :D

If I upgrade to the 3Gs how do i get my apps across from my 3g?

The apps are tied to your Apple account in iTunes, they should just synchronise to your new phone. If you've downloaded apps straight to your existing phone, make sure you perform a sync with the computer first, so that these will be copied across ready for the new phone.

Looks like Im going for the 32Gb iPhone 3Gs on PAYG and moving it to the £20 Simplicity (free Web - identical to the contract iPhone version?). Means it will cost me nearly £900 for the 18months but with the flexibility of moving off it after 12months. Ill get 600m/1200t which seem plenty.

Ill only miss out on the internet teathering and Wifi usage (does anyone use Cloud hotspots on the 3G? If I dont get it I still could access the free ones right? Like McDs?)

Sounds expensive but looking at my current contract Ive spent £730 so the increase isnt that massive really - just a large upfront fee. Ive got insurance via my bank so thats all sorted aswell...

Anyone considering the contract route? Be interested to understand your decision if you are? The proper PAYG call/text pricing doesnt seem to be value for money unless you spend nothing each month - kinda confused how the rewards wotk on PAYG and everything :o
