*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

Just ordered my 3G - little concerened after all the people who have had major problems with theres.

It really cant be that bad can it?

I love mine, it's the best mobile device I've ever owned. I've had to do one restore due to an application store/update issue, but it wasn't a major hassle. There are some bugs, all minor in my opinion, that will get ironed out with updates.

Wow thats cheap :)

Though after looking at the contracts they are good value...

Do you lose any functionality going for the O2 PAYG over the contracts?

ps3ud0

They've announced the prices on the website - it's actually £349.99 for the 8GB and £399.99 for the 16GB. Both prices include 12 months of unlimited browsing and WiFi - after that you pay £10 per month if you want it.

See http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/paygo for the info - it says that on PAYG visual voicemail and call merging aren't available. Anyone know what "call merging" is? Shame about visual voicemail.

Excellent prices. :)

Well worth the wait. Can upgrade with ease too given that you're not tied into a contract.

A 32gb version would be very tempting if it was in line with those prices (obviously a bit more expensive).

But then would people on a Contract not get an offer if they want to upgrade?

I was all set on getting a iPhone on contract in the next few days then they annouce the P&G prices now I dont know what to do :(

I'm not sure of the whole contact and upgrade situations to be honest, but surely it's bound to be a hassle? I considered a contract but they cost a mad amount of money for what you get. I just can't comprehend it at all.

Been waiting for Pay As You Go. The prices are excellent when you consider the likes of the Nokia N96's pricing. I know the latter offers a lot more and has a better camera but I thought Apple were going to overshoot on their pricing of this - it appears not.

Because ordinarily you get the handset for close to nothing. Take the iPhone 3G 8Gb. One off cost of £99, you pay £35/month over 18months.

Or you buy it PAYG for £350. If you pay anything over £15.55 per month on phone calls and texts on PAYG then you've lost out by not taking the contract. And that doesn't take the time value of money into account, which would bring that £15.55 down a little bit.

iPhone Upgrade

Well it seems they let iPhone people upgrade for free.

I am sorta in a rush for a new phone so I might go ahead and get a contract. Though I am just gunna have to do some thinking now .

What features if any do you lose pay going P&G?

csmager, I pay £15 a month for unlimited texts and calls to 02 sim. I can't see how that would be beaten on a contract.

I use about 1k / 2k texts a month as well as minutes - I imagine that would run up quite a bill after the free ones had gone.

If I go for a contract 16gb right now, I'll pay £159 and £30 per month for 18 months, that equates to: £699 and that's not even including where I would exceed texts (125 free).

On the 16th of Sept, I buy a 16gb for £399 and pay £15 per month for 18 months, that equates to: £669 and that's with no extra costs for texts and calls.

Internet is missing from PAYG, so add £10 x 6 months (since the first year is free) and that makes it: £729

Not forgetting I don't have to pay every month and after a while of topping up £15, I end up with a huge bulk of money that hasn't been used.

It's a lot closer than I initially thought but I would spend a fortune on texts so a contract makes no sense. Missing out on visual voicemail and call merging won't break my heart either - suppose it just makes sense for me with no contractual obligation.

Thats the main thing that winds me up on the iPhone, the dictionary.
Absolutely hate it sometimes really winds me up but it is quicker than not using a dictionary. Wish it was good as the blackberry one :(

There's no way i'm reading all 84 pages of this thread. But in short...

Im in Florida at the mo on holiday, and am thinking of buying an 8GB or 16GB iPhone 3G ($199 or $299) but was wondering, will it work fine when I get back home and stick my O2 contract SIM card into it? I know you can charge it via USB etc so all that stuff will work fine back in the UK. But was just wondering about using it with my SIM card.

Im thinking it will probably work fine, so im probably just asking a silly question. But im jst asking to make sure.

Thanks!

AFAIK, no. That might work with a UK bought phone but the US one expects an AT&T SIM card.

Just sold my original 8GB phone. Reminds me of selling a 12" PowerBook for a tidy sum before news of the new MacBook had filtered out to non-geeks the general public.
