*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

Did anyone elect to transfer their existing O2 PAYG number on to the iPhone's SIM?

Predictably they stuffed up and haven't got it transfered within 24hrs like it said. I'm also dubious that the balances on the two numbers will be merged as is claimed.

Well my number was ported over today and the iPhone all works ok, but my iPhone still displays the number that it originally was. Does anyone know of any way to get it to display my ported number as the "iphones" number is wrong on the phone and in itunes.

edit

yes wush I did, bought the phone at around 9am yesterday number was ported over about 2pm today. balances merged correctly but they stuffed up the free wifi & data bolt on and I was charged for it, I have since got a refund but the guy I called at o2 was not really that helpful and he did not know if it would happen again next month.

They have 6 minutes to correct mine.

To be fair, there's bound to be a massive queue of people wanting the same thing done so a delay was expected, even if 24 hours was promised.

Hang in there, hopefully it'll be done shortly.

If you transfer from your old phone, does your iPhone then get the previous tariff you were on?

Not sure how do you find out which tariff you are currently on, and I can check as my old sim was on talkalot, the one that came with the phone was favourite place?

I wish I know how to find that out, mate. :D

I'm in a mess at the minute and a bit disjointed from finding out that my 12 months free Wi-Fi goes down the drain if I change tariff.

I was thinking of going to 02 unlimited (the tariff on my previous phone) and getting the 02 Web and Wi-Fi bolt on for £10 p/m but apparently that doesn't access GPRS and E-Mail at Wi-Fi speeds. Furthermore on 02's website, that bolt on is for the 'Original' iPhone.

But after the free 12 months net was up, I would be getting charged £10 p/m so... is this the same thing?

02 customer service said it was for the iPhone 3g but I'm not sure at what speeds.

I have no idea at this stage.

I phoned 02 earlier to say if I changed tariff, do I lose the free 12 months Internet and the guy said yes.

My girlfriend has just called another representative and he said he doesn't think you do lose it when you change tariffs.

The Web and Wi-Fi Bolt On detailed on the 02 website gives an indication it's for the original iPhone only, yet one of 02's customer service people said it was for 3g as well.

I usually am very positive in my words about 02 but their handling of this has been very poor and downright confusing. So much to the stage where I still don't know and was considering a bolt on if I changed tariff, for something I might already have.

The latest rep has now said that this is for first iPhone only.

You couldn't write this crap.

Slogan - Phone 4444 and opt 2 then 2. Mine says that i have the o2 unlimited web and wifi bolt on and it expires on the 16/10. Would just presume it will automatically roll on, month by month.

I'm loving this phone :D

Yeah, suppose so, they did say that the best case would be ~2hrs, though!

Don't think so. The O2 Customers section on that page talks about number/balance only. Which is what I definitely want personally.

Mullins - That sounds a bit annoying about the outdated number persisting. I thought having the number changed 'live' after activation would be a bit dodgy, but assumed the phone would know how to deal with it :/

Youve been told 24 for the number to be transfered?

I was told 72 hours and i have the phone on contract!!!!!

By the way, is my sig showing up for anyone else?

Guys a quick question. I was under the impression that the 3G iPhone hasn't been jailbroken and unlocked so any sim can be used in it. But after a bit of research last night it seems that it is and has been since July. Is this correct. I'm currently looking to buy an iPhone soon i.e. tonight or tomorrow but obviously if it hasn't been unlocked I can only buy a 2G one.
Thanks

I asked this last week and the answer is apparently not. iPhone's from certain places eg Italy are apparently unlocked as standard, and there's are some SIM modifications around but apparently they are a bit hit and miss and can have undesirable side effects.

As soon as I can unlock and take my T-mobile SIM with me I'll be first in line at the Apple store...

Yeah have been looking into this. Think i'm going to have to get a 2G one but I don't like buying second hand and I can't find any that are new. :(

cool :D

quick question, my iPhone is sync'd to my mac at home, but can I update the firmware at work? on a vista machine? or will that just completely miss up my phone?

Cheers

From experience yes. I tried to update my phone at work and it wanted authorize itself with my work pc, part of this process was to delete ALL music on my iPhone so i can't steal it. Bit annoyed since my Zune makes my music collection read only when i register with another computer, this makes a lot more sense.

I know there's no software unlock for the iphone 3g but has anyone any experience with those sim-adaptor thingies that are supposed to open them to other networks? (by fooling the phone into thinking it's an o2 sim?)

Don't know if this is of use to anyone but I took the plunge and ordered one of the sim-adapters. Much to my amazement it worked - my iphone 3g is now working happily with my vodafone sim in it. I must admit i'm still slightly dubious about it: can't help but think there must be a catch somehow.
