*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

got mine today, crap thing is past 2 years i have been using ubuntu or fedora and now have to dig out my xp disc to activate it

well activated and jailbroke it.

hardest and most time consuming thing i had to do was fit the invisishield protector i got for it. those edges are hard to stick almost drove me suicidal at one point

O2 store if your buying in RL. i ended up ordering online via carphonewarehouse website as i finished work way after the nearest o2 store . was delivered next day little after 9am.

Do you rate the invisishield? I'm looking at either that or a foof, I've heard rumours that it can affect the touch screen, does it?

Where's the best place to read up about jailbreaking, the benefits and pitfalls etc.. ?

Mail not updating

One thing I've suspected for a while and confirmed today, is that my mail isn't always updating.

I just opened the mail App and it was "Updated 14:20". My iPhone had been on all day and had signal between 14:20 and now so why hadn't it updated? (It did update then once I had opened the mail app)

Under the main settings the iPhone's set to fetch new data "Every 15 Minutes" and under the advanced tab, my gmail account (that's what I use on the mail app) is set to "Fetch" (under Select Schedule).

Any ideas?

TY
Ed.

I think mine's started doing the same recently - fetch via IMAP over 3G and it seems like things often don't turn up until you start interacting with the phone or open Mail.

It definitely worked at one point and I haven't formatted or changed any related settings!

I just received one of them Next 3G Sim cards that was talked about earlier in this thread.

My T-Mobile SIM now works in my iphone 3g, however in itunes i'm getting "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported."

It wont let me sync as a result of this. Do i have to jailbreak, i was under the impression i just needed one of the SIM adapters and i was good to go :S.

Cheers

I fitted mine today, had one on my 2G aswell. They are pretty damn good, hasnt affected the touch screen at all. It does make the phone feel alittle more grippy and works just as it would normally.

I read a tip somewhere that when you put the rear full piece on and have it all in place put it in the original iphone box and leave it for about half an hour, this will keep it held down. I did this and its been spot on.

Also waiting for my Vaja GT case should be here next week, fingers crossed.

I think I read that putting the back bit on, causes problems with the apple logo coming off?

Can you put the shield on then take it of and replace it if needs be?

yes i rate it, the 3g i phone is a slippy little thing the invisishield give you grip on both sides. for me it doesnt affect browsing via safari which is what i do a lot of. im glad i got it. but i did notice that it gave me 4 pink ish lines i thought i had a dead pixel problem but its the shield.

zagg sent me out a new one in 3 days which has no-pink lines. nice too see a company keep the promises they make

and jimmy yes you can re use them, first time i got dirt and finger prints on the sticky side. rinsed it under a cold tap shook it a little then fitted it on. ias i said before the front is easy the back is hard to fit. i got bubbles on the some of which dissapeared after after 3 days i used a needle on the remaining ones for a smooth finish.

as for info on jailbreaking i found iclarified to be useful

Hi All,

Does anyone know of a dongle that allow you to use the iPhone with your car stereo.

I'm asking on behalf of a collegue, she tried the one that I use for my iPod Touch (Griffin iTrip) and that and another one will not work.

The basic need is to be able to stream music from the iPhone to the stereo over FM rather than a direct plug connection, powered from the cigarette lighter.

Regards

Taff

ive got a belking tunebase, plugs into the cig slot. it works fine but if i am honest i am not to keen to have plugged with kids in the car. also theres a new iTrip 2nd gen transmitter out that works with 3g iphone

also why on earth do apple e-mail you an itunes receipt for free apps you download like frings, RSS reader when the invoice it selfs says 0 for charges for the apps.
