*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

well thats mine sorted, O2 oxford st. 16gig to be collected on the 11th.

got a little piece of paper that lets me jump the queue of punters.
Which store on Oxford Street? I put my name on a pre-order list at the one opposite Bond Street station, but quite a few people on various forums have been told by O2 (on the phone and in stores) that all waitlists will now be ignored and it's going to be purely first come, first served on the 11th.

No, that's not the right John Appleseed. The proper John is the MobileMe guided tour one. :D

I know, realised after I watched it last night.

It's actually Senior Product Marketing Manager for iPhone Bob somethingorother :p

Also, why the rush to put names on pre-order lists? Not like they'll run out in the first hour??

This just in..
The iPhone 3G will launch on July 11th in 20 countries worldwide. More details have been trickling in about launch times and pricing:

- According to Macworld.co.uk, the UK's O2 stores will open at 7am on July 11th to begin selling the iPhone 3G. O2 will be limiting sales to one per customer.
- AT&T announced yesterday that U.S. AT&T stores would be opening at 8am to launch Apple's latest phone.
- New Zealand is said to be kicking off their sales at 12:01am local time. This translates into 5am Pacific, 8am Eastern, and 1pm London time on July 10th.
- International rate plans have been released for the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Hong Kong.
- Photo of an iPhone 3G "in the wild" taken in Mexico City.

Apple has not yet announced the time they will be opening their retail stores on launch day, but they are holding a briefing with retail stores on July 6th about the process.

I think everyone is totally over hyping the launch, yes theres gonna be a few geeks there at 5am waiting for the shop to open. But these are not Wii's, they come with nasty 18month contacts attached to them.

Most of the joe public are not just going to rush out and get a new contract when the majoratory of people that have them will be locked in for another X ammount of months.

every o2 store will NOT be getting 5000. That is stupid. And now I feel stupid since your more than likly being sarcastic.

I have a receipt from O2 that shows on it Apple Iphone 16 gig, basically had to register for a sim only deal in the mean time to make me an O2 customer (i'm on orange atm) but then they said they'd hold it for the 11th only and hand over the receipt that they gave me that clearly states Apple iphone 16g 11th July 2008 - and then they'll give me the phone on whichever of the Tariff's i pick

(No not the one by bond st, the one up towards tottenham court rd end of oxford st.)

I agree about the rush being over-hyped. I'm in a lucky position in that my contract has expired and is currently rolling, also at the moment I have a work phone and a personal phone, with the free data included in the contract rates I can finally ditch my brick of a work phone and just use the iphone for everything.

I'm currently on a Vodafone PAYG sim but I want to keep my number when I get an iPhone, what is the procedure for this? Do I need to contact Vodafone beforehand and obtain any sort of migration code (Like you would do with an ISP). I have never transfered my number before but the Vodafone sim is an ex-contract SIM and I have had it for about 3 years so it would be a pain to have to get a new number now.

speak to your current provider and ask for the PAC code, they will (if anything like my mob) transfer you to a retentions team who will try and schmooze you into staying, ignore them and keep asking for the PAC code.
Once you have this, phone the customer services of the people you are joining and give them the PAC code they should then be able to port the number over.

Now, there is a bit of a problem with this.
Firstly, they have done this to raise their sim only figures in store, very smart.
Secondly, you need to be on a simonly deal for a min 30 day period before you can upgrade your account one that has a handset - normal or iphone.

So... you may actually not be able to get the iphone on the 11th. Unless you have had this sim only deal for more than 30 days.

I'm tempted to get the 16GB iPhone if I can flog my 8GB iPod touch. After watching that guided tour, I'm frothing at the mouth.

They are mis selling it, shocking really, using excitement for a new product to improve sales for another.. i must tell my manager about this great idea.. ;)

lol I was going to say, it wont be the first time businesses have used that tactic.

I've pretty much talked myself out of it, now. 3G coverage 'round here is non-existent, so I'm just not feeling that it's worth it right now.

Meh, I'll probably wander in to O2 on the 11th anyway :p

Really not sure whether to go for this or not. Had planned to stick with the 1st Gen iPhone!

Got the 1st gen iPhone at the minute unlocked and use it with my 300 free text per month o2 sim. Can't help but think i'm not getting the best out of it with no unlimited internet though.

Thing is I could sell the 1st gen and probably have some spare cash after buying the new one for £99 although I would be tied into an 18 month contract, of which I don't think I would use as i'm primarily a texter and the novelty of free internet etc may wear off.

Do I sell mine up and go pay as you go 3g iPhone/go with contract or stick with my current phone and get a bolt on or something?

Decisions....

Not as it, probably a 3rd party app will let you do it at some point.
Hope you are right, though I presume its been an outstanding app since the iPhone has been released (no doubt some people want to surf on their laptop using EDGE for simple things) so I dont know if it going 3G will help.

Unfortunately Safari isnt perfect yet, so I would still want to rely on a proper browser...

You can currently do it with jailbroken phones:

Not tested myself (iPod Touch only until the 11th :() but looks reasonable enough.
