*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

Quick question for those with some sort of clue, I've got about 7 months to go on my current O2 12 month contact, got a free Viewty in January. Am I likely to be able to ditch my current contract to get a 3G iPhone (and, I assume, hand the Viewty back?) or am I going to have to get a PAYG iPhone and bung the Viewty up for sale? Not really bothered about cost at this point- I've got an iPod touch and I know the iPhone is the device for me.

I'm assuming with the PAYG iPhone, I can just bung my current O2 SIM in it and carry on using my normal voice/data/text plan? Or is the iPhone locked to a particular type of SIM?

I realise there's not a lot of concrete info around (nothing like last minute, eh O2?) but if anyone has an idea, it's appreciated!

You could buy out your contract buy converting to the lowest monthly contract then pay of what it would cost to run out. IE, put your contract down to£20/month then pay 20*how ever many months left.

Many carriers will only allow you to drop 1 tariff-tier at a time.

Example.. If you're on a £35 p/month contract, you may only be able to go down to £30. Although you can drop down in 6 months intervals.

Probably easier to flog the Viewty online, pay towards buying yourself out of the contract and go with a fresh contract.

Also.. don't say I don't give enough..

No answers from the iphone sticky so I though I would try here-

Selling my iphone ready for the new V2...

Firstly can I unlock the V2 to work on t-mobile if I buy a payasyougo handset?

Secondly how do I save the numbers from my currect I phone?

Lastly if I reinstal the 1.1.4 firmware and run z-iphones again this will reset the iphone to as it was when I got it right?

Thanks

no one knows about unlocking for the V2, as it hasn't been released.

I'm guessing it will include a new bootloader which may take the hackers a few days / weeks to crack, however the iPhone 2.0 SOFTWARE has been cracked in beta releases, so it may be sooner.. again, no one will know for sure until it's released.

You can't save the contacts on to the SIM using official means. There are 3rd party apps via Installer.app that allow this. However, I'd recommend syncing them to Address Book (on a Mac) and re-syncing them over iTunes with the newer iPhone, or even perform a backup in iTunes.. this will copy your sms messages and pictures too.

If you're talking about the iPhone V1, you can just do a restore within iTunes which will reset the iPhone back to a factory state. However, you may have to restore the bootloader to 4.6 as ZiPhone downgrades it to 3.9 during the unlock process.

Use Bootneuter from Installer.app to do this :)

Perhaps 02 are the only stores to offer a PAYG model, or shock... the prices they released were a cockup

Its going to be a rather hard, long week :) I'm popping down to Harrow town in a few hours to do a bit of shopping so I'll pop into CPW and see if they have a waiting list of some kind.

love my iphone but i dont know the g3 not that much on the old one might got for n96 but dont know just yet

I'm starting to suspect the Pay-as-you-go version of the iphone 2 will not be realease by O2 on the 11th. The only reason I can think of for the lack of information is that they are hoping to lure people into contracts. Wet our appetites with the thought of a contract free phone, then hope we get annoyed waiting and sign-up for an 18 month contract.

I wish O2 would hurry up and give us answers, they seem to be taking their time in the UK. Things they need to answer
1. what time it goes on sale.
2. Will the PAYG be available at launch and give us more info.

Hi guys, my missus is working in boston for a week mid june, does anyone know if there is anyway for her to pick me up a 3g iphone without a contract?

Silly me didn't call Orange to find out about migrating my number etc. Oh well. Will see if I can order one. I dunno if I'm gonna do the whole rush out to the shops. I might order online and hope it comes soon but there's the whole "only deliver to payment address" but i'll no doubt be at work anyway :s

AT&T do seem to be releasing a contract free version, but the price was almost the same as that in the UK, so no real advantage. The only other option would be to get a contract phone, then cancel within 30 days and pay the early termination fee. But you would need someone in the US to do it for you, unless the wifey has a US social security number and bank account. Even then there would be no guarantee that you could unlock the phone. Apple have really closed down the grey importing of iphones with these new contracts and purchase methods. It's still possible to do it, but the financial benefit is now only marginal

Was looking through the comparison sheet for both iPhones:

Seems it has geotagging. For those of you who don't know what that is, geotagging is when geographical information is added to the metadata of a photo. So after you have taking a photo, you can see exactly where it was taken.
