but to be honest as far as I understand it there's no really massive gains to be had by starting from scratch?
There isn't. It's not Windows/Android.

Purely an OCD thing folks.
Which is surely served by going through your restored phone getting it right back to stock? Very theraputic!
Guys do you know a way to transfer all my text messages to the 7 without doing a restore? I fancy a fresh start with everything except messages - I thought it might pull them from the cloud but they still seem to be local?
I'm reluctantly getting a black 128GB Plus. Prize is crazy but I'm a mug
They won't do that. Its a horrible place to put it for many reasons.
Everyones thumb moves on a nice plane to reach the current location but if you move it to the back then you have to start using different fingers and holding it weirdly.
You can't unlock it when its on a desk without picking it up.
You can't have a case without a horrible hole in the back for it.
Your thumb is the least abused finger out of all of them wear and tear wise usually so it makes sense to have it as the usual digit to use. If I am climbing a lot my other fingers get ruined to the point of not working on touchID.
They will still have some sort of physical button on the front for home, app switching, siri etc.
How do you tell where the touchID is on the back without it having a very obvious depression or raised area.
That's such a lot of money for a phone especially given second hand values have really taken a hit of late. Can't ever see me paying this much money for a phone.
Perhaps half that amount and even then I think it's too much. I doubt I will ever go back to an iPhone again. You can do the same things with Android and more plus your bank balance will be a hell of a lot healthier.
I don't want to seem like I'm trolling, but unless you're spending 6-700 quid on your Galaxy phones or other high end Android phones, then you're just getting garbage
You just have to accept that for a premium phone, upwards of £600 is what you're expecting to pay. Bet the Galaxy S8 doesn't start below £600 next year
Would anyone here be up for running through a few benchmarks for us number geeks?
There's plenty of benchmark results out there already:
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2016/09/14/geekbench-android-a10
https://9to5mac.com/2016/09/08/iphone-7-plus-3gb-ram-geekbench-benchmark/
Beastly single core performance
Yeah there's a few, mostly though the websites are just Geekbench so far.
