The New European Super (borefest) League

How would it be any less popular than Champions League/Europa League? at least they're mostly quality teams and not teams like Celtic/Rangers who qualify every year because they have no domestic competition.

For the casual global fan, it will be extremely popular. Personally, I've no interest in watching a "competition" with this format, it's going to become very stale very fast.

I'm comparing him to the vastly wealthy FIFA who are suddenly complaining about football losing its soul and being all about money when they have had a big part in that and have profited huuuuugely from it. FIFA ain't some nickel and dime enterprise that are struggling to rub a few pennies together. Make no mistake about it, FIFA are all about the money, they just don't like the idea of someone else taking it away from them.

Why would I be comparing Hamilton to rich football clubs, they are the ones who want the super league.
Lewis is not complaining about money etc in f1 if thats what your refering too!!

His too busy fighting BLM and saving the world(climate change)

he doesnt give a damm about the politcs/money side of f1.

Teams like Rangers and Celtic? You mean the SPL Champions who have to play at least 2 rounds of qualifying to get in?
Why shouldn't the Scottish Champions be in the "Champions" league ahead of an English Club that finished 4th?

You could throw the same accusation at PSG, Bayern or even Juventus for most of the last decade.

Not sure why people are really surprised by this at all. Most of the top clubs have owners who only care about money, not fans. Allowing our biggest clubs to be sold to global billionaires, oligarchs etc, it was bound to end this way.

The Premier League and others getting on a high horse about this is fairly funny; look at the TV fees and similar they are getting from the likes of Sky, BT and now Amazon - it has all cost the 'poor hard working' fans even more money.

I agree; the lustre of playing Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter twice a year will quickly wear off.
I actually think a "closed shop" English Premiership would keep more interest long-term as there's proper local and regional rivalry there.

I loved Gary Neville's comment yesterday about deducting points from the break away teams.. That would be hilarious if the Premier league did that!

-25pts deducted to all the clubs signed into it every season, with -3pts added on every season they are still in it. If they are already in this "super league", then they don't care if they are not actual champions in their own domestic league.

2 rounds of qualifying against teams who have the same situation domestically where they largely have no competition.

I'm not saying Celtic etc shouldn't be there if they qualify as that's the format of the Champion's League, my point is that for a neutral the Champions League is largely boring until you get into the later stages of the knockout phase where the big teams meet and it really means something.

Perhaps champs league qualification should be based more on uefa co-efficients than just finishing third or fourth.

Say like a champion from each league followed by the next 20 or so teams in the top CE rankings.

I've always believed that the champions league should consist of only the actual champions. For me its a ronseal thing, Champions go into the Champions League, hence the name, others go into the Europa League. Thats always seemed entirely logical to me

Yeah but greed obviously led to the number of teams being increased and aren't they currently debating whether to expand it even further? listening to UEFA and FA (who formed the break-away Premier League in similar circumstances) take the moral high ground on greed is cringeworthy.

You say that but mysticsniper seemingly didn't, believing that Leicester could keep their players and judging by his 2nd post that players would want to stay. I was genuinely interested by his and others responses because it seems like a lot of people making these statements don't realise what they're saying.

How will you feel when clubs like Liverpool and Manchester Utd eventually relocate to America?

I'm not, i'm referring to people who are benefitting directly from something, complaining about it and claiming to care about it when they clearly don't.

The formula one circus that has a huge global carbon footprint and goes to morally objectionable countries purely for money and he is speaking out on climate change and human rights.

FIFA claiming that they care about football and competition and the little guys when they don't give a ****. They just don't want to lose their power and wealth.

Someone on here was saying that transfers fees have got ridiculous especially in light of COVID. Transfer fees have been crazy for years. The money in football has been crazy for years and in any business where money is the main goal you can't be surprised when A) someone tries to muscle in B) the existing powerbase fights back.

I don't disagree with some of the points here - I think the PL has a responsibility to share the wealth with the lower leagues that it's currently failing to do. But even taking into account parachute payments, we've seen over 20 different clubs promoted to the PL in the last 10 seasons, so it can't be that much of a closed shop - this ESL appears to be completely different.
With 3 up and 3 down every season you're likely to see that, a more interesting number would be the percentage of sides that are relegated that get repromoted within 3 years. But anyway, the point was simply that the idea of football clubs being self serving and wanting to pull the ladder up below them is not new. We see it at literally every level of the game. Nothing made that clearer than project restart when the smallest sides saw an opportunity to block relegation and threatened the restart of the League. It's not even just at PL level, they tried the same thing in League 2 also.

There’ll be plenty of fans who want it to, omnom and baz on here for sure.
I've literally said I don't want it :p

Exactly. What are people expecting? The reaction has been absolutely wild especially from people on Murdoch's payroll who've benefitted massive from fans being rinsed for years.
