*** The Official Apple September 9th 2024 @ 18:00 "It's Glowtime" event thread ***

I've pre ordered a 16 pro (256gb - black). I need a new phone as my 13 pro is battered and the battery is dying but it doesn't feel like it's going to be a massive leap. I'm half considering cancelling my pre order and getting a 15 pro instead when a good deal comes up.

Why not get Apple to install a new battery for £85 and get at least 2 more years out of it?

That is definitely an option. I want a new phone though, just not sure if it should be a 15pro or a 16pro.

Looks like another year of keeping my 13 mini. I'm more interesting in the rumored 17 Slim next year. Coming from a mini, a phone for me either has to be small and light or thin and light. Now they no longer do the mini, a slimline version could be the next best thing.

13 Pro to 16 will not be a massive leap at all, other than how it feels in the hand.

Get a new battery, save money and environment.
Environment isn’t really saved, the phone will be manufactured and sat in a warehouse regardless.

I’d actually argue the more efficient 16 battery would be better overall.

One thing I didn’t pick up from the marketing PR is whether an iPhone 16 is necessary for the AI functions. The A chips from the past couple of years at least have all been equipped with Neural Engines so they should be able to cope with basic AI at least

As soon as enough people have adopted and shown off the apple intelligence features it will become a subscription. I’m going to get the 16 pro anyway but only because others in my family need an upgrade and we can pass the phones down the line.

Realistically the iPhone 11 still did everything I needed at a rapid pace. No one can ever tell me what they need an upgrade for rather than a battery replacement but it doesn’t stop them.

I wish they would stop saying aerospace grade titanium like that means anything.

For me it has to have a big screen due to eyesight. Could never use a small screen these days even with reading glasses....

On a single phone, no. But if more people shared the mentality of reduce, reuse, recycle - Apple would have no choice but to produce fewer phones.

I agree but they are going from a 13 to a 16 which is fair enough in my opinion.

And let’s be real they don’t manufacture to demand they overshoot and end up with stock which sits for ages and ages.

It’s very hard as a consumer to care for the environment when mega corporations themselves don’t care, it’s one thing spewing out buzzwords and another doing it.

I'm not going to get anything new from that event. The first gen of Apple Intelligence will probably be a bit janky so waiting a year for it to mature seems like a reasonable idea. Also I don't use my phone as much. I mainly use my Studio and Air for most computing tasks. That is where Apple Intelligence will help me more.

Needs a device with a minimum of 8GB RAM so for phones it’s 15 Pro and above

Apple intelligence isn’t janky at all on the 18.1 beta, actually works well.

But if we all just take the stance that individually we can't do anything, we won't see a mentality shift.

Companies are run by people, and if those individuals change their mentality, the culture will change with it
