Following on from the above conversations about replacing Forerunner's with an Apple Watch...

I assume I would need the cellular model in order to track runs? Or is there a way for the wifi model to do it?

Wi-Fi only model is fine. The only thing cellular is useful for is making calls during/after runs.

I've found the GPS accuracy and metric tracking extremely accurate on the Apple Watch at least comparable to the Forerunner I replaced it with. The only feature I'd like to see is the workout app expanded to offer more of training coach function found on later Garmins e.g. "Training status: productive". HealthFit app (paid app) does give you a TSB curve for you to track fitness vs fatigue but it won't outright tell you if you need to rest, you'd have to ascertain that from the fatigue level and how you physically felt.

Or listening to “live” Apple Music.

Can people with the Ultra post pics of it on their wrists? I have thinner wrists and currently have an series 4 watch 45mm, which seems about right for my wrists, but currently trying to decide between the ultra or series 8. Like 99.9999% on here I'm no extreme sportsman :p but I do hike, walk etc a lot and work out 2 - 3 times a week, go climbing etc.

The series 8 will do all that fine, but the ultra looks interesting assuming my wrists are not too small for it.

My wrist is 175mm and the Ultra fits fine (if I could figure out how to post a photo I would ;)) for me the best feature is the better battery life, I can get 3 days use on a single charge.

As mentioned above its worth going in store to try one on, it came with a medium size alpine loop which is really comfortable plus I also bought the ocean band as I do a lot of paddleboarding.

Plus the existing Apple watch bands fit the ultra as well.

Cheers all

One of the guys at work has had a bit of a play with an Ultra, he really likes it as an upgrade from his 5, I'm on a 7 so not feeling it at the mo, how doyou find it size-wise?

To be honest I don’t really notice a difference in size. It was at first when I first put it on I was like oh this is bigger and heavier but apart from that fitting in the shop that’s it.

A friend of mine was talking about the ultra last night. He is a qualified diver and mentioned that it was suitable for diving. We spoke about the potential, or none potential of touch screen being functional under water. Be interesting to hear if apple have overcome that.

So I’ve had my ultra for a week, got it through Vodafone on 12mth contract.

Have to say I’ve got skinny wrists and going from my series 5 to the ultra took some time getting used to. It’s massive compared to my 44mm series 5. But I actually quite like the size and the chunkiness to it tbh.

One thing I do love about it is the screen size, so much easier to type messages out than it was on the series 5. Also the battery life is amazing, my series 5 couldn’t last a full day. I’ll probably give that to my wife as she’s been eyeing it up since I got the ultra lol.

All in all I like it and it’s grown on me when originally I thought I’d hate it.

The new wayfinder watch face is pretty cool as well.

Well, I just bought a series 8 45mm GPS only, I got £40 trade in for my series 4 44mm. Apple UK say up to £50 trade in. Couldn't sell it privately as a couple of times recently the pairing failed and had to be setup again. Didn't want any come backs.

They only wanted the watch face, didn't want the charger or strap.

I'm thinking about getting my partner an Apple Watch SE, neither of us have owned a smart watch before.

I'm assuming this is a solid entry point for her if not better?

I don't think she would benefit from the top tier model or anything. Thinking of the 40mm version

I have the S8 myself but gave my wife an SE this week for her birthday she's more than happy with it, mostly just wanted something with more features than her fitbit had.

I think the latest SE is miles better than the S5 or S6.

I always buy my partner a new Apple Watch for Christmas and this year I have gone for the S8 41mm Starlight.

I have not rushed out to buy the Ultra but the poor battery life of the standard Apple watches is a big problem for me and the Ultra looks like it fixes all the problems.
