It's big compared to a 'normal' Apple Watch, however in all honesty I don't notice the difference in mass/size compared to any of my normal watches (omega seamaster type stuff). Felt quite chunky when I first got it, now I just don't notice. I really do like that screen however, it's joyous.

The other thing about the battery life is the speed of charging - I like the fact that even putting it on the charge stand when I'm showering and the like gives it enough boost for me not to actually have to formally charge it (I.e., in one session). Seems lots of small charges does it just fine. To be fair that was similar with my v7 too I think.

Yeah I noticed that. Charged mine for the first time whilst I was in the shower earlier and it went from 38 to 80% in virtually no time at all.

Ordered the XL strap for my watch but the L strap fit me fine but I was getting bored of the little catch digging in to my wrist.

Only just realised the little catch is meant to be facing away from your wrist and I had it the wrong way around :o

Ok so little battery report. Fully charged it Saturday night then went to bed with it on. Yesterday ran a half marathon in the morning and a 10km in the afternoon, both runs had the phone off to force the watch to use GPS and cellular. This morning it’s still at 50% which is pretty good.

How essential is the cellular version of this? Would I be able to listen to Spotify and PocketCasts if I don't have my phone with me on a non-cellular version for example?

So now I've got my iPhone, an Apple watch is possibly on my radar to accompany it. Did anyone here switch from another brand (particularly Garmin) to Apple? I'm not sure how something like a Garmin Forerunner compares to Apple watch for running. I'll go and have a bit of a Google this afternoon.

I bought the Series 7 last year with the view to replacing my garmin, which is my daily running, cycling and walking watch. I kept the series 7 for 2ish months. I recommend trying one when you can get one around Christmas with the longer returns period. Now I’m new to the apple religion and have since changed everything over to apple in my house. I love my apple gear but I’m a complete hater of the watch.

I think it‘s inferior as a sports watch to even the lower level garmins. I don’t know what I was expecting from the watch though tbh and everything I did want my garmin already did better for sports and adequately for other features. I have two other Apple Watch users in the house and all I ever see them do is get a notification and then pick up the phone which is on them or a mere foot away! The garmin will do that.

What it won’t do is unlock your Mac. The hours it would have saved me typing in password1!

My Garmin will last 10 years, even 4-5 years later the battery will last me 2 weeks. With frequent excercise I normally get 7-9 days. It never has to come off my wrist in that time for sleep tracking if I so cared. Not sure why everyone has become so obsessed about sleep tracking, but that’s another conversation. You won’t worry about scratches and as they are flat faced you can put a protector on if you want and not look any different or reduce functionality.

Apple watches have become consumable throwaway tech. My wife and son’s SE and Series 5 are both about done. My wife charges hers before bed for that magical sleep tracking that she does nothing about and the watch is out of juice before she gets home and all she does is what I see 99% of other watch users do, get a notification and pick up the phone.

Ok so it means I run with my phone as well, but after my 39 year old running partner had a stroke I sure as hell would never run outside of a populated area without one anyway! That non cellular sports watch wouldn’t have been much use!

I also prefer garmin connect over the apple health bloat. Personal choice.

Ask yourself what you actually want the phone to do that your garmin can’t do, then use the Christmas rental service and see if you like it enough to keep replacing it every 3 years. Or pay for a battery change.

Thanks for taking the time to write that. I think you've really just confirmed what I was thinking anyway. I love my Forerunner 235 with its multi-day battery and really just waiting on Forerunner 255 to be readily available.

Thanks for the above, I'm actually considering ditching my Forerunner 255 and moving to an Apple watch. I'm not running anywhere near as I used to and taking it a lot less seriously lately.

What model garmin do you own out of interest?

Good post.

I've had Garmin's for years, Fenix 3 which was indestructible (still has a 7 day battery life when not on GPS) but have recently upgraded to the Descent MK1. About to purchase an Apple watch for the Mrs who thinks her Foreunner is too bulky and doesn't like her Whoop (for the magical sleep tracking, that nobody does anything about).
I have a feeling she will get sick of charging it so frequently and basically mimicking her phone that she wont wear it either! Time will tell :)

225, it's very old now and I put a replacement strap on it this week from amazon (official Garmin replacement) for £16 and it looks like new again. Battery only charges to 97% now but as I said I can take it on a 2 week holiday and not bother taking a charger. Where as my wife ran out of charge when we got diverted coming back from Jamaica and had a useless item strapped to her wrist.

When Apple watches can last 5+ days off the battery I'd consider one. Until then I will keep walking past peoples desks at work with them on a charger because they have had it on at night monitoring their sleep! :)

I switched from a Forerunner 235 to the Apple Watch Series 3 and haven't looked back.. currently on the S7 and eyeing up the ultra. I did consider going for the Fenix 7 for the screen but I'm too engrained in the ecosystem :D

The notifications and extra features over the Garmin won me over but the battery life is no comparison. In fact I've had to change my charging style with the Apple Watch to maintain sleep tracking whereas before I could keep the watch on 24/7 without worrying. I now charge as soon as I get up, giving me enough time to shower and make breakfast then a quick boost in the evening before bed.

I would normally do at least 1 hour of exercise a day (be it a walk or run) but on training days I'll run anywhere from 5k to a half marathon at a time. Typically the battery life on the "series" watches is fine but then I'm hammering it with bluetooth audio. I've told the mrs that if I get a marathon entry place I'll be picking up the ultra to allow some extra juice for longer runs.

Does anyone else have tap to wake issues?

I know my touchscreen is fine because if I go into the weather app for instance it never misses a tap anywhere, no matter what the pressure or how fast.

The problem is I have raise to wake and always on off for battery, so I use tap to wake.

However is seems to miss taps quite regularly, it’s happening on 9.0 and 9.1.

Also erased all content and settings and still having the issue.

I think it’s software related because sometimes taps are also delayed (takes a second to wake) but I’ve never had this on another Watch before.
