***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

When installing Xp how do you go about it? would it be possible to install in on a 4gb version, how much room does it take up?

Use a USB CD/DVD Drive (or even a MS HD-DVD drive!), Use Nlite to remove un-needed components etc (Use this guide http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=22332 you can download his Nlite config) then install.

You can install normal XP but it'll be quite a bit more bloated and you can install from SD/USB stick etc, but needs to be setup differently

Posting from an EeePC :D I've borrowed a 701 4g for the evening with a Three 3g usb modem running the standard linux OS. Works very nicely, I can see the attraction of modding a 3g modem into the case for internet anywhere :)

Installed this addon for firefox to add safari style progress bar in to the address bar - allows you to run without the status bar for increased browser area https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1951:)

Could any of you guys point me towards some cheap ram that is known to work in the eee 701 4gb? im looking at 1gb probably, thanks. Also does anyone know when the 900 is planned to be released, looking at the massive shortage of the 701 i was wondering whether it may be worth while saving and pre ordering the 900 instead, what do you think?

The 900 will be more expensive, and i think that once it goes over £250-300, it loses the whole appeal of the Eee, being cheap and so portable.

But if you were to get the 701;

cool, thanks for that. would there be much improvement over the 701 for the increase in price? if i get 1gb of ram for the 701. would the screen size make much difference?

Depends what you are going to use it for.

I love my 701, its perfect for browsing etc.

The 900 is rumoured to have the same processor, touch screen and a few extra things like a larger SSD.

Depending on the price, it shouldnt matter.

If you were to get the 4G now, you'd still get quite a bit of it back from selling it, or keepint them both as they are getting cheaper now. Seen one for £200 already, brand new in a store.

well id use it for typing working notes for school and uni in the autumn, also surfing the web and email when im out and about, would the 701 be fine for that? was just worried about straining my eyes at a small screen.

I quite like it myself.

I use it most days for Office, MSN, Browsing and Music. I also plug it into my LCD regularly aswell, nothing happened to my eyes yet. Posting from it now.

701 is perfect for you. The new 900 will have a larger screen but increased res so you will strain your eyes just as much unless you drop the res.... then it will look horrible.

cool, thanks, performance wize it should be about the same then too? also better battery on the 701 then with a smaller screen.

Yeah, the battery life is very respectable.

All you need for your 701 is;

1-2GB RAM, 4-8GB SDHC and you're sorted, or a usb mouse, but thats optional.

I just have 1GB in there atm, and will add more later.

Currently running a nLite version of XP, with the full Office 2003 on there, with MSN, Firefox, Xfire, and a few small games and other apps with about 2.1gb left.

nice, i have a 2gb Ultra II sd card i will use for the moment but am planning to get an 8gb soon, also does 2gb work with 701s i heard that only 1gb is recognized by the os (linux) will it only work with windows?

2gb is seen in Windows. A new kernel is needed for Linux I believe.
