***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

is it easy to get a new kernal?

if you have no linux experience compiling a new linux kernel yourself will most likely give you a migraine.

i don't know if there's a new Xandros kernel already compiled to install which would be the way for you but there is an EEE optimised Arch kernel with all the modules already included....but then if you don't know linux installing Arch in itself can be tricky. i'd recommend looking at xubuntu/eeebuntu if there's no available Xandros kernel that supports 2GB perhaps.

yes there is only 1 ram slot in the 701.

i've currently got XP and Arch Linux dual booting on the SSD with 2gb ram installed, such a sweet little machine lol :p

the 901 will be nice as i tried to install Gnome and ran out of space on the SSD and ended up using XFCE instead, might try a Arch - Gnome + Compiz install to the SHDC next and give that a blast.

TBH I don't see what the problem is with the 900 price, it's still half the price of most UMPCs on the market, and for some people the extra screen space and resolution, plus tripple the storage and double the ram, and the bigger touchpad, make it worth the extra money.

Of course 701 owners want to defend it, but there's room in the market for both products. I'm not about to criticise someone for spending £800 on an XPS when you can get a Vostro that has 95% of the performance for £550, that's their decision and not everything comes down to value for money. The appeal of the EEE goes beyond just the price. It's a combination of price, portability and usefullness.

before buying and using the 701 i was in the 'too much money' camp for the 901 but after having played with this 701 for a few days now i really will appreciate the extra screen real estate and the bigger SSD.

hey i'm dual booting XP and Arch Linux onto the 4GB SSD now so it's big enough really but some more space never goes amiss, especially if you want those bloated Gnome/KDE desktop environments installed. i've now got Arch installed to my 8GB SDHC with Gnome+Compiz running and the performance is amazing really.

at this stage i'd say i will definitely pre-order a 901 for upto 350 no problem at all, these really are insane powerful little boxes and a lot of fun but the current screen does let it down somewhat.

Yes, im not saying that you shouldnt buy the 900, but the Eee 701 is much better value imho, if the 900 hits the £300-400 mark..then you get to the stage where for £100 more you can get a 12" laptop with a better spec, or a standard laptop.

The 701 isnt too small, no-one will be buying it for anything but browsing, office or just a portable device, so i think that the screen is definitely fine for that.

Depending on the price, i will be getting a 900, but its the fact that for a tiny bit more money, you're looking at a C2D 1.66, 2gb ram, 250gb hdd and a 12" screen for £100ish more than the rumoured price of the 900.

Yes, but it is meant to be very portable, which it is, and people are saying they want an even bigger screen..okay yes it will still be portable but no way near as much as the 701, and i think the fact that its around £200 is why its so good for value, i have no problem with the 4GB SSD, you can easily add an internal SDHC Card if you wanted for more storage and then one in the SD Card Slot.

the 901 is barely any bigger so i don't know how anyone could say it isn't as portable ...most of the space from the bigger screen is currently used by the speakers and top/bottom border on the 701.

i don't think asus will be so stupid as to out price themselves but anything over 350 will be a push for me personally, guess we'll just have to wait and see.

i've got an 8gb sdhc card in mine but the bigger SSD will always be welcome as it's quite a lot faster than the fastest SDHC cards available.

As marscay says above the size difference is negligible, based on the photos I've seen the 900 is only a few millimetres bigger.

Whether the screen is big enough is obviously a matter of opinion, I did try using one and I personally thought it was too small for the size of the eee, it just looked wrong to me to have the tiny screen with the masses of plastic round it (the speakers and bezel), and I definitely thought the resolution was too low. I agree about price though, I wouldn't pay more than about £350.

edit: Btw everyone OcUK have these on preorder now for £336 and list the linux version as 20GB and the XP one at 12GB, not the 12 and 8 that's been reported. 20GB is getting towards a serious amount of storage. Hope it's correct.

Either way its pretty good-20GB plus a 16GB SDHC card should be more than enough for anyone who isn't running lossless music and/or loads of games.

does the 900 only come in the white version then?

Assuming you already have a new unused copy of xp, you may as well go the 20gb Linux and self install for a larger ssd agreed?

Any advantages on the prw installed xp version? And will the 900 be gutsy enough to handle vista respectably?

I assume the equal cost will be down to the further 8gb with a free os or 8gb less with a paid for os. It should make them the same price.

Considering 32GB SSDs cost around £350 Ill be surprised and elated if the linux version is a 20GB SSD just for £330 (i.e. only about £100 more for another 16GB, larger and better screen over the 701)...

Its between this and the Xperia X1 for me :D

ps3ud0

Dunno why you'd want to bog it down with vista tbh. Vista ran badly (even after heavy streamlining) on my core duo 1.7 GHz, 2 GB ram FS Amilo laptop.
