***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Finally can afford a 901 for myself-yay!

I think I'm going to get the XP version (want to be able to play FM08 on the train!), but would like to be able to use Linux for everyday stuff. Is the Eee Linux distro available to download off the net for free? Is it easy to install? If not, how good is the compatibility between the 901 and EeeXubuntu?

My Eee 901 XP edition arrived about half an hour ago, and it's fantastic. Really rugged, good screen, the auto overclock feature works fantastically, huge battery and multitouch! Even the keyboard is impressive, I've only made one mistake while typing this-nowhere near as tough as I had been led to believe. Will post some pics later if I get the time.

Oh, and before anyone asks I got the XP edition as I wanted to use Office 07 and Football Manager without having to fiddle with Wine. I'll be sticking Xubuntu on here as a dual boot soon though.

Just got one the other day. When you scroll down usig the arrow keys is anyone else firefox going all skippy and jerky? It's really annoying.....

Can the Atom cpu in the Eee handle mpeg4 movies? is there a resolution limit (Apart of res of screen)?

Should do - I have the old Eee 701 (running windows XP) and even at the stock 650MHz it plays back xvid/mpeg4 using k-lite/media player classic fine at upto 720x450 - not tried above that - tho it wouldn't play smoothly on the default linux install.

Anyone had a go at fitting a 1.8" HDD into a 901?

The SSD is the only thing thats putting me off the 901 due to lack of space, but I love the slightly smaller size of it compared to the 1000H or the Wind.

Do you have a 701?

If not, you won't notice how much bigger it is.

The EEE 1000H is the smallest laptop I have had, and it still maintains it's ultra-mobility. Trust me. You won't regret the 1000H

I don't have any at present, but the 901 seems about 2cm smaller in length and width than the 1000 which is why it appealed, although I am thinking as to whether it could be too small and whether I should go for usability over portability.

My GF got her Linux 901, really nice piece of kit, really light and small and very quiet. The 6 cell battery is great too.

So I have to get one :D

Although I'm not sure on 1000 or the 901.
I like the idea of 80gb hdd and XP out of the box. Problem is the poorer battery and the size, is it that much heavier/bigger than the 901?

The 901 is great but quite fiddly with the keyboard, the hdd isn't the biggest at 20gb and I don't like Linux.

Decisions, decisions, decisons...

Can anyone offer some advice?

I spent ages trying to decide between the two for exactly the same reasons as you.
The cramped keyboard wouldnt have bothered me on the 901 but in the end the HD and extra screen size won me over.
I bought the 1000h and added a 250gb HD and 2gb of ram (only as I had them spare) and now it is used more than my xps m1530!

It is quite a bit bigger than the 901 but is still small enough to be chucked in my laptop bag with the xps.

You can upgrade the ram but not HD otherwise I would have gone for that option.

Early 901's had a ZIF connector which allowed 1.8" HDs to be used but Asus removed it very quickly :(
There is talk of a possible pci-e to zif connector in the works (ie removing the larger SSD from the pci-e port and replacing with a zif adapter) but this is speculation at the moment.

lol isnt that always the way :)

Still I am more than happy with my 1000h oh and I get approx 5.5h batt life, I am so used to getting 2 hour laptops that this is amazing.

Well ... got my black linux 901 today .... wow .... yes they are little but they are pretty awesome with it. Typing is interesting on the keyboard but manageable and most of the issues are probably due to my typing rather than its keyboard. I was a bit worried at first as the box had a picture of a white one but on opening the box it was a nice shiney black model (and what they say about finger prints is very true).

Played back full screen divx avi files off of usb stick nicely using the built in media player although it could do with a couple more codecs :) .... not sure at the moment to stick with Linux or go Windows on it ... I think I'll leave it Linux for a bit and wait and see. Now I just need my 16GB SDHC card (which is somewhere in the postal system).

Haven't tried networking it yet as I'm in the office.

thinking about going for the 'EEE PC Atom 1GB 80GB Black XP' edition. Are these suitable for professionals? I'll need to install MS Office on it, and will mainly be using the office applications and web browsing. How would the performance be in those situations?
