***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

I'm, still contemplating whether to buy a 901...

I have a laptop already that is quite powerful but is truly wasted on me as all i really do is browse the net, watch a few divx videos and play peggle on it lol

Anyway i think a 901 would be perfect for me, the small screen doesn't bother me either :D

ok guys I thought I'd ask here first before opening a new thread

I've got a EEE 701 4G

I bought a 16GB Veho SDHC Memory Card for it from a well known retailer (I wont mention which)

I'm running Windows XP Pro (SP3), However I seem to be having lots of problems with "Write Delayed Errors" with the SD card.

The card is formatted in FAT32, if i try and copy anything large (large being 100mb or so it struggles, if it's just a small file, say 4mb no problems.

I've tried forcing the card to format in NTFS but it has the same problems, ive disabled lots of things and tried what seems everything but just no luck.

I've asked on the EEE forum but getting no response, mainly because halve the people on there are US owners.

I've been told that the Veho cards are great for reading speeds but no good for write speeds, so I'm wondering if something like sandisk extreme III cards would be any better? even consider downgrading to a 4GB non SDHC card etc

Could anyone suggest a decent SD card

Thanks

Just took delivery of an Asus EeePC 900 20G today and I have to say I'm very impressed with the build quality - it looked a bit plasticy in pictures imo but it's really nice.

Anyway, I have wiped off Linux and installed XP but I couldn't get the two partitions to merge back as one!!! Do they have to stay seperated as it seems to recognise them as two seperate drives rather than one partitioned one?

I think that they are actually two physically separate drives.

The smaller drive is SLC tech while the larger is MLC; thus you always want Windows on the smaller SLC drive as it is much more durable.
I went for the H model when I realised the SSD version had two separate disks, my thinking is to drop in one larger SSD when they become affordable.

Anyone know where I can find a good guide for getting rid of unwanted files within XP etc. I really need to make some extra space available on the smaller drive - I can't even install XP SP3 as it says I dont have enough room for backing up etc before install...!!!!!!

What on earth have you got installed on the 4GB drive then? I've got hardly anything other than XP SP3 and of course have paging etc turned off and I currently have 1.84GB used (1.90GB free) on there, and that's without using nlite and just uninstalling things like Games after the initial XP install.

Nothing, I just installed XP and it's 3.4GB used...!!!

If it's that used with just XP then it sounds like you haven't got swap (not good for SSDs) and hibernation disabled ..... they would be taking up a significant amount of space (and if they are disabled are their files still there?)

I will have another play with it today and see if I can trim XP a little. When you say 'swap' do you mean page filing? Also, is there a way of making page filing go to the D: drive instead?

Yep the paging file, (I deal with Unix all day at work so deal with swap space there so tend to always use that term), you can relocate WinXP paging files easily enough using the System applet in Control Panel, (System -> Advanced Tab -> Settings (Peformance) -> Advanced Tab -> Change (Virtual Memory)

But I would not move it to the D: drive ... the D: drive is a much slower SSD so you don't want to page to there. You really want paging turned off completely on the EEE's (I am pretty sure that the preloaded XP comes that way too) as the number of writes having it on will generate may affect the life of the SSDs. Given memory prices it's easy enough to drop 2GB into a 901 if you are worried about memory capacity (first thing I did with mine) and XP runs great with that even with paging off.

Whoop, my delivery is due to arrive 09/09/08 :D

Says it comes with a week's free 24/7 technical support - anyone know if this /must/ commence from date of receipt or if you can invoke it at some later time if/when the things decides to go belly-up?
