***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Yep the paging file, (I deal with Unix all day at work so deal with swap space there so tend to always use that term), you can relocate WinXP paging files easily enough using the System applet in Control Panel, (System -> Advanced Tab -> Settings (Peformance) -> Advanced Tab -> Change (Virtual Memory)

But I would not move it to the D: drive ... the D: drive is a much slower SSD so you don't want to page to there. You really want paging turned off completely on the EEE's (I am pretty sure that the preloaded XP comes that way too) as the number of writes having it on will generate may affect the life of the SSDs. Given memory prices it's easy enough to drop 2GB into a 901 if you are worried about memory capacity (first thing I did with mine) and XP runs great with that even with paging off.

Ok, I managed to turn off the page file and trim a little from XP and I got SP3 to install but now I only have 20MB of space on drive C: :( The problem is that I want to install Acronis True Image once it's all setup and take an image for quick repairs later on. Acronis needs extra disc space on C: to install though, even though I'm actually installing it to D:...!!!!!

Anyone know what RAM I would need to buy to upgrade an eeePC900 it to 2GB?

I could CPU-Z it but it's busy with things installing on it and I'm impatient...!!!

My school has provided all sixth form students with one of these today. We all have the 4gb black one, and have already broke mine by putting a password on, and then it forgot my password and I was locked out! >< Luckily I managed to regain access.

Is there any way to get a normal desktop and not this with the tabs?

Well it comes with Linux pre-installed but you can actually put XP on there if you want to.

Yeah I know, but I don't want to do much to it in case I can't recover it. I just want a standard Xandros desktop. Can it be done?

EDIT: Never mind, done it. Much better :)

2G is ok, naturally you only get 2GB storage space. Also the CPU cannot be overclocked and the memory cannot be upgraded. If the 2G is VERY cheap then go for it but if you can get a 4G for a little more then it's worth every penny.

With stock linux on there you wont notice much difference, you can even install WinXP if you use nlite to slim it enough, I have a slimmed down version and its not even over 1GB used yet (about 700MB from a fresh install)

Thanks for the reply.

Do they both come with intergrated webcam, I can't see it on the specs page. Also it isn't labelled as a 701.

I am very close to ordering one too, and selling off my 701 for which I already have a buyer. The extra hdd space and larger screen are tempting!

Maybe this has been answered but why is the Linux 40GB eee more expensive then the XP 80GB eee?

Because of the Solid State Drive it has. To be honest, I hadn't actually noticed that when I ordered - But I could do with the extra HDD anyhow I think, rather than the extra performance a SSD would bring.

However, I was thinking of trying to set it up so my OS is on a memory card in one of the expansion slots, and I just use the 80GB drive for storage. Is that possible? What kind of cards do the expansions slots take? I Havent found any cear information, although I'm sure that is my fault.

I am thinking of buying an EEE PC 1000H or 1000 for University. I am tempted by the 1000 for it's SSD drive except would I ever be able to upgrade to a hard drive as I noticed the 1000H's base is thicker to hold the hard drive?
I have seen some videos on Youtube where some people have described the 1000's SSD drive as being 'slow to write' compared with the 1000H's 80GB Hard Drive.

Would you buy the 1000H over the 1000?

I am also tempted by a 901 but people have also said the 901's screen is not on par with the 1000.

Being a student I want to make a wise purchase on which one I buy so any help would be appreciated.

I bought my 1000H, which I am waiting for to be delivered today, for the exact same reason. I wanted a ultra portable I could take to lectures, take notes on, do work on wherever I am and carry all the information I needed with me at all times.

I went for the 1000H for a few reasons - 80GB hard drive, will be plenty for me to (hopefully) hold 3 years worth of notes and work. 1000 over 901 because of the increased keyboard and screen size, making it a lot easier to quickly take notes in lectures. I also went for the XP version, despite being a bit of a Linux fan boy, for a number of reasons - I can always put Linux on it at a later date, and having a legit copy of XP is a bonus (I can even dual boot if needed), but mainly because of the note taking software available for XP.

If you are looking to do the same sort of thing I am, take a look at Black Hole Organizer - Its the best bit of software I have found for it, and intend on having a play with it on the H later today when it arrives.

Thanks for that, well I will buy mine from here but I think when I buy straight away I will buy 2GB of RAM.

I have a genuine copy of Vista that I will probobly use (Vista's Wireless setup is a lot better than XP's)

Well tell me how you get on with your 1000H, an idea on the battery life would be nice as well.

Cheers for your reply ;)

I have just ordered one of those 10,400mah (yeah right) batteries from the 'bay for my Eeepc 900. I'll get some pics and test it when it arrives.

Woooooo posting from the 901 now :)

Good so far, might take me a while before I decide not to keep the modded Xandros. Just doing the first charge now... while using it, yes...

Be interested to see how the Atom copes with Vistas more demanding requirements...
