***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Ive not looked that much into the performance of the N270 but you are aware its about a third of the power of a mobile C2D at the same clock?

I personally wouldnt run Vista on it...

Thanks for that, well I will buy mine from here but I think when I buy straight away I will buy 2GB of RAM.

I have a genuine copy of Vista that I will probobly use (Vista's Wireless setup is a lot better than XP's)

Well tell me how you get on with your 1000H, an idea on the battery life would be nice as well.

Cheers for your reply ;)

No problem, hope it helped in some way. I am posting from my 1000h now, and dont have a single bad word to say about it. Well, thats not entirely true - The position of the shift key is annoying as hell, but I imagine I will get used to that in time, and is hardly a major issue.

I was tempted to order a 2gb RAM card off the bat as well, but decided against it in order to see how it was with the stock RAM to begin with. To be honest, I have not yet found myself desperate for the other GB, although it would have course be nice to have.

The machine is near silent, especially when using eeeClock to control the FAN speed. The backlight can also be toggled all the way up and down with the same application, greatly increasing the battery life/appearance of the screen as you see fit.

*Carries on tinkering*

Oh, as a last note - The wireless network card in the machine seems to be great, I am getting better signal than ever before in a lot of places.

Well now I'm thinking of getting the 1000H and buying a 64GB OCZ SSD. Apparently these SSD's are really good compared to the one's Asus provide in the 1000.

Just a quick question, I currently have the eee 701 4G which I upgraded to 2GB ram. Will the eee 1000H take the same ram, I kept the original 512mb from the 701 so would just put that back in there, and put the 2GB in the 1000H.

Oh and is it as easy to install as it was for the 701?

yes it is the same memory as the 701 :)

After a bit of googling it looks like it is just as easy to install RAM into the 1000H :)

Just to let you know I upgraded my ram and HD in my 1000H
It was a 5 minute job.

I now have a 2gb OCZ DDR2 ram and 250gb samsung 2.5" 5400 HD.

I get approx 5h batt life with wifi on, bluetooth off and screen at 60%

Anybody else got Ubuntu eee 8.04.1 on their eee? I installed it on my 901 the other day and I'm loving it, Netbook Remix makes it even more accessible than the default Xandros install but also gives easy access to all the other features of Ubuntu, plus it now has full hardware support straight away, I'd definitely recommend it.

Does anyone know the official read and write speeds of the Asus EEE Pc's 40GB SSD drive.

I've been looking at two potential SSD drive I may get:

The 60GB is better at reading but if someone could get me the 40G SSD that's in the 1000 for me I would appreciate it.

It isn't one 40GB disk, I think it is an 8 and a 32??
The performance is not that great on either of them from what I've read. Get the H and drop in one of the them ^^ if you want good performance.

yes it is the same memory as the 701 :)

I just saw on youtube and yep it does look just as easy.

I will prob pick one up on friday now, I'm pretty much sold. I use the 701 everyday as my main PC lol, only about an hour a day max really but the idea of the same device just abit bigger with a 3 inch bigger screen, a lot more hdd space, built in bluetooth etc seems ideal.

Thanks for your advice Jimmy,

So are you basically saying I can't go wrong with either of them OCZ SSD drives?

I got a 900 20G today as an upgrade to my 701 4G. I know its basically the same hardware but it was £200 and worth every penny.

Screen is much better
Although the 4/16 combo isnt ideal and the 16G is generally classed as to slow for the OS, its still faster than the 8GB SDHC card I had in the 701.
Keyboard is better than the 701

I havent tested the battery out yet and I did get stuffed with a 4400 battery again :( but have a 10400 battery from the 701...although its black and the 900 is white so looks a little like a zebra :)

Found a great program for installing via USB too: http://www.msfn.org/board/How-to-install-from-USB-WinSetupFromUSB-t120444.html

Works great with my 450MB after install nlite'd XP too.

Just got the asus 1000H. The screen looks huge considering iv been using the 701 for a few months now. Keyboard is a lot easier to use as well.

Overall it looks great and does the job perfectly for me.

Bit of a weird problem, I've just taken the 2GB ram out of the 701 and taken the 1GB out of the 1000H and swapped them around. The 701 is showing as 1GB and the 1000H is also showing as 1GB  I might have to re-open it just to make sure I did actually swap them over and not put them back in the same one :o (which still doesn't explain why the 701 is also showing 1GB)

Did anyone who purchased the 1000H do a format, it has quite a few things installed on there which I don't really need.

I was intending on it, but tbh - There isn't a whole lot of bloat on there, and I uninstalled what I could/wanted to. Have you noticed any performance increase from doing so?

I keep getting more and more impressed by this little machine, best bit of technology I've bought in a long time.

I am however planning on upgrading it, as I find myself using it a lot more than I thought I would. Would the following components be suitable:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-144-CS&tool=3

and

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...50GB 5400RPM SATA 8MB Cache - OEM (WD2500BEVS)

I am of course tempted by a SSD drive, but I can't really justify the extra outlay for what seems like a marginal performance increase (at least in terms of what an Eee will be used for, for gaming it might be different).

Also, if I did upgrade to the components above would I notice a significant battery life hit? At the moment I usually run the machine under clocked to 1ghz and on a fairy bright back light and get around 4 hours, browsing the web etc.

I was going too but after using the laptop for a few hours now, I have decided against it too. The stuff I don't need it easily removed and there isn't as much junk on there as I originally thought.

I've got a portable 250GB usb hard drive so I don't think I need to do anything else with mine. A huge huge improvement over the 701 and still very portable, awesome device :)

Anyone tried to edit simpleui.rc to add/remove apps from the EEE Xandros simple tabby interface?

The original one isn't editable, right? So I've made a copy in /home/user/.AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc and apparently editing that should do the job, but my changes don't seem to want to appear. What am I doing wrong?

Cheers!
(bit of a linux n00b)
