***The Official Core i7 Overclocking Thread***

Just run a blend test on all 8 workers..

I don't have speedstep disabled, but you can if you want... I find it keeps temps down as the processor runs at a lower speed when you are just web browsing or doing anything that is not processor intensive.

havent run prime yet heres a pic of temps now ill rune, for an hour you say??

edit: what exactally am i looking for on this test? some sort of pop up error within an hour? thanks again

Those temps are pretty normal..

At least an hour, but preferably overnight...

Prime will stress the CPU cores. If I take mine too high, then sometimes it just gives an error on some cores, other times it will blue screen, other times the PC will just freeze.

See how you get on!

Best to run it a few hours to be totally sure the system is 100% stable.

It's good to have SpeedStep on, it keeps your temps down when idle, and overclocks when under load, your'll have around 4GHz with your current settings if you enable it. Keep an eye on the temps when running prime.

Well if the overclock is unstable it will either report an error and stop, or the system will simply crash.

i may do that the although ive never seen it go over 3.9 even underload

Only if you have speedstep and turbo mode enabled.

I have speedstep enabled but turbo mode off as I find it flaky with the extra 200Mhz.

Yeah, I find the blend test to be best..

These i7's sure run hot - but my god they fly when overclocked, like nothing I have seen before!

Just need Asus to fix the cold boot issue, and all will be hunky dory!

Well last night I had it overclocked and running fine. I rebooted and it was fine. I shut it down, left it 5 mins then switched back on, it was fine!

Switched it off last night, switched back on this morning, overclocking failed! message..

It is quite similar to the link you posted on guru3d fornowagain, but not convinced it's an identical issue.

What BIOS are you guys running? Maybe 1003 has a problem?
I'm getting a similar message from a cold boot, it hates the fan being on "normal" profile and thinks its spinning too slow - says "cpu fan failed" and resets the overclock unless I go in BIOS.

What idle temps are you guys getting? I'm at 57c (realtemp) at 3.2ghz idle, 19c room - seems hot to me.

Running an Akasa Nero + AS5 with fan on max.

Well I'm watercooled, but my idle temps are similar to air cooling temps - and they should be about 38deg @3.8Ghz idle so 57c @ 3.2Ghz is way over the top...

Hi guys am going to be ordering the following tomorow:

i7 920
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 (not the extreme version)
3gb G-Skill 12800

Whats the chances of hitting 3ghz on the stock air cooler? how good/bad are the stock hsf?

harris1986, you're chances of hitting 3Ghz on stock cooler are very good. I'm on stock cooler atm and mine is at 3.3Ghz. I could push it further I suspect, but I'm waiting for a new heatsink. My temps under load are around 60-70 degrees.

harris, Yes you should get 3.33ghz on the stock cooler, Set the Vcore to about 1.25, and set the blk speed to 166, keep ram arround 1333 or 1600 mhz and should be 100?% stable.

Mine idles at 38c clocked to 3.8Ghz watercooled, but from what I've read, there is little difference between air and water temps with these chips...

So how many are having cold boot issues with the P6T?

I'm looking at 920, 6gb 1600 Dominator,P6T & Trueblack cooler.

I will be hooking up 2 x 1TB (Samsungs), Blu-Ray Drive, 280GTX, Enermax Galaxy 1Kw PSU.

My PC is switched off at the wall point each night so don't want to have to keep reseting the BIOS each time I boot up. Whats the next best alternative X58 board?
